Doctoral research from day to day

Le doctorant, comme tous jeunes chercheurs, passe par une phase d’apprentissage et de socialisation au sein du monde de la recherche scientifique. Une première thématique abordera ce-dernier point en traitant des processus de socialisation au sein de centres de recherche. De plus, les doctorants et chercheurs pointent régulièrement une forme de fusion entre leur vie de travail et leur vie privée, comme si les espaces ne se différentiaient plus. Il en résulte de nombreuses contraintes pesant sur l’individu, faisant passer cette notion comme un nouvel enjeu de société. Un échange convoquera la notion d’intersectionnalité dans les sciences sociales et ses enjeux quant aux conditions de production du savoir. Enfin, une dernière intervention abordera la problématique de l'écriture d'une thèse - les spécifités, l'agencement, ... - et son rôle dans la formation du chercheur.

Media and identities

Actors or instruments of the construction of a sense of community, ethnic and national belonging?

The International Conference offers to facilitate a discussion about the role of media in the construction of political identities. Media have always played the role of actors, sometimes of instruments, in the process of shaping community, ethnic and national identities as well as in shaping "imagined communities" usually induced by political actors in particular historical developments. Media discourse on the community, the ethnic group or the nation is never autonomous. It can be considered a collective production pertaining to one or another network of actors. In order to understand this process, it is important to place the content of the media in its production context. What is the role of the journalists and the media in the creation, renewal and maintenance of community, ethnic or national identities?

Combining scientific Expertise with Participation: the Challenge of the European Landscape Convention

The adoption of the European Landscape Convention (ELC) in 2000 represents a major event in taking landscape into account at the European level. As of June 2013, 38 Council of Europe member states have ratified the Convention. By specifying that landscape is an essential component of the quality of life of Europeans, the Convention is, first and foremost, in line with a territorial dimension. Moreover, a strong foundation of the ELC lies in its specific definition of landscape, notably based on the notion of perception by populations. One of the scientists’ major concerns is therefore how to reconcile objective scientific approaches with the subjective aspect of citizens’ perception. After more than a decade of practice, the Conference will be an opportunity for scientists who have been working in line with the ELC to present the tools developed and to reflect on their tangible, measurable and observable effects.

Congolese arts and the Congolese diaspora in Belgium: images and post-colonial relationships

Ce colloque interrogera la postcolonialité de la Belgique à partir du champ artistique de la diaspora congolaise en faisant appel aux chercheurs, aux artistes et aux institutionnels. Il s’agira de réfléchir à la façon dont les rapports historiques entre belges et congolais se répercutent dans le champ de la création, de la promotion et la diffusion des artistes. Nous examinerons également la façon dont ce champ artistique s’est constitué et recomposé dans le temps ainsi que les processus d’hybridation à l’œuvre, à travers l’inscription des artistes dans différentes sphères artistiques. Nous chercherons aussi à savoir dans quelle mesure et de quelles façons ces expressions artistiques participent à la (dé)construction de la narration nationale et s’inscrivent ou non dans la continuité des imaginaires et des représentations de la Belgique au sein de la diaspora.

Nutrition and Food Production in the Congo Basin

Nutrition is a universal human right. Population growth and a higher demand for food, together with a changing nutrition pattern, will put the environment, at global level, under a growing pressure in the coming decennia. This pressure will be very strong on regions with a high biodiversity due to the ever growing demand on arable land and an increasing demand for animal protein, which will negatively influence the global ecosystem, the global climate and the biodiversity. The aim of the conference is to highlight a number of topics dealing with nutrition, the demand for food and food production – past and future.

The 2-day International Conference "Policing Empires: Social Control, Political Transition, (Post-)Colonial Legacies", to be held in Brussels in December 2013, will be the last in a series of events convened by the GERN Working Group on (Post-)Colonial Policing. Building on previous explorations of policing, surveillance and security experiences in colonial contexts, the aim of this final conference is to promote a multi-sited and comparative approach to colonial policing practices and their legacies in the postcolonial world.

Les métiers du transport de marchandises font l’objet d’importantes transformations. Innovations technologiques, logiques d’intensification du travail (standardisation, accélération), nouveaux modes d’organisation du travail (flux tendus), nouvelles organisations du secteur d’activité (mises en réseaux, concentration d’opérateurs), nouvelles techniques d’intensification du contrôle et transformations des cadres légaux et institutionnels constituent autant d’éléments permettant de rendre intelligible, c’est-à-dire de relier, ces transformations. L’ensemble de ces transformations sont parfois décrites, contre l’image d’épinal postfordiste, sous l’angle d’une « néo taylorisation » des métiers du transport (Desfontaines 2007), à l’image de processus discutés dans le secteur plus vaste des services autant que dans l’industrie (Durand 2004, Linhart 1994).

Encounters, cohabitation and the confrontation of Slavic and Germanic worlds

Slavica Bruxellensia journal

La rédaction de « Slavica Bruxellensia » vous invite à contribuer à la constitution du dixième numéro qui sera consacré au thème : « Rencontres, cohabitations et confrontations des mondes slave et germanique » au travers des siècles et des genres littéraires et artistiques. En effet, depuis le XIIIe siècle, suite à la rapide croissance démographique dans la partie occidentale de l’Europe, l’arrivée des colons germaniques en Europe centrale et orientale contribue à un dialogue fructueux, quoique complexe et non exempt de tensions multiples, entre les mondes slave et germanique. De nombreux travaux proposant un regard neuf furent effectués surtout dès les années 1990 (à la fois par les historiens et les chercheurs en littérature) sur les aspects littéraires et historiques de la fin de cette cohabitation, qui a culminé après la seconde guerre mondiale et l’expulsion des populations germanophones des parties orientales de l’Europe. Les questions résultant de ces bouleversements géopolitiques, largement tabouisées par les régimes autoritaires, resurgissent avec force à partir des années 1990 dans les travaux scientifiques et les œuvres artistiques.

An Historical Perspective

While contemporary grumblings about hospital food have become the quintessential hospital complaint, it is undeniable that a clean, warm bed, rest and the provision of food and drink, rather than medicines and therapies have always greatly increased hospital patients’ chances of recovery. Indeed diet has from the time of Galen been a central part of medical therapy. However, even if central to the day-to-day routine of hospitals, workhouses and asylums, food and drink continue to be overlooked in historical accounts of hospitalisation. This conference aims to foreground the role of food and drink in health care institutions in the past.
