Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city
This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18th and the 19th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

Port Cities: Comparative Perspectives on Urban Stability and Public Safety

The coming of globalization was centrally anchored in the increased mobility of goods, people and ideas. Port cities were thus transformed in crucial hubs in this mobility age. Because of the heterogeneous social and cultural landscape associated with commerce and transport, port cities became increasingly known as insecure places. Hence the perceptions resulting from and the strategies adopted to deal with the insecurity and the search for a new sense of urban stability were especially acute in port cities.

Medieval and modern fortifications in Mediterranean towns
International archaeology conference
Ce colloque a pour objet principal d’identifier, dans le domaine des fortifications urbaines des villes littorales de Méditerranée, ce qui constitue un lien entre le passé et nos sociétés urbaines actuelles. C’est l’occasion de dresser un tour d'horizon de nos connaissance mais surtout de développer une réflexion sur la prise en compte de ce patrimoine monumental lors de l’aménagement des territoires. Pour nos contemporains, les fortifications sont tantôt évaluées comme un obstacle au développement économique et à l’urbanisme, tantôt comme un atout pour le développement touristique. Ces rencontres ont pour ambition d’analyser ces diverses motivations au travers d’une sélection de sites retenus sur le pourtour méditerranéen afin de comprendre ce qui a conduit à envisager des projets de mise en valeur ou, au contraire, à ignorer pour des raisons économiques, culturelles ou idéologiques ce patrimoine remarquable.

Environmental approaches of interactions between cities and forest supplies during the Middles Ages and the Early modern period. 12th International Conference on urban History, European Association for Urban History – Main Session M16
As places of consumption and production European medieval and early modern cities exerted a enormous pressure on neighbouring woodlands. Some historical studies have already discussed the way cities tried to impone their control on these lands emphasizing the diversity of needs which were fulfilled by forest exploitation (wood, timber, charcoal, grazing…). They often concluded that urban pressure resulted in an inexorable degradation of the forest cover. Indeed local woodlands and forests products could probably never meet the demand. In order to face shortage or, better, to prevent it, urban authorities attempted on one hand to extend their control on more and more distant forests and to attract interregional or « international » trade flows. On the other hand, they tried to regulate the local market so as to ensure access to several important needs regarding urban economy (charcoal, timber).

Port zones: planning, restoration, rehabilitation from Antiquity to the present day
Les journées d’étude de la SFHU (société française d’histoire urbaine) se tiendront les 16 et 17 janvier 2014, à l’université de Caen Basse-Normandie et sont organisées en collaboration avec le centre de recherche d’histoire quantitative (UMR 6583 CNRS / UCBN). La thématique retenue cette année invite à réfléchir aux liens entre les installations portuaires et la ville. Port au cœur de la ville, existence d’avant-ports dissociés de l’espace urbain, les schémas et leurs évolutions sont multiples depuis les époques anciennes et les mutations des espaces portuaires nombreuses. Cette thématique, conçue dans une perspective chronologique et géographique large, trouve un écho particulier dans les territoires de l’ouest de la France, et spécialement de Normandie, où les questions de rapports entre les espaces portuaires et le tissu urbain ont orienté les politiques d’aménagement.

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

L’échange architectural : Europe et Extrême-Orient (1550-1950)
Ce colloque international sera l’occasion d’examiner la question des échanges opérés dans le domaine architectural entre Europe et Extrême-Orient au cours de la période 1550-1950. A priori, on peut supposer que, s’agissant de deux mondes éloignés, et entrés tardivement en contact direct et régulier, l’identification de ce qui est échangé devrait s’en trouver facilitée. Pourtant, s’il semble évident de reconnaître une forteresse néerlandaise en Indonésie, des églises jésuites en Chine, une pagode chinoise en Angleterre, ou un pavillon de thé japonais en France, il est difficile d’analyser ce qui s’est passé chaque fois, ce qui a été transmis ou emprunté, et comment cet échange a pu se produire et avoir lieu. Il est donc nécessaire de procéder à une enquête portant à la fois sur les causes et le contenu de l’échange.

Justice in episcopal cities from the Middle Ages to the end of the Ancien Régime
Le but de ce colloque est de réunir historiens du droit et historiens autour du thème de la justice et des justices dans les cités épiscopales, du Moyen Âge à la fin de l'Ancien Régime. L'idée générale est de s'interroger sur la manière dont la justice était administrée dans les cités épiscopales selon plusieurs axes d'étude.
