Schengen: people, borders and mobility
In the era of globalization, which benefits the implementation of policies of both stimulus or repression for the movement of people, academics have been fostering discussion around topics and concepts related with migration, borders and mobility. This epistemological basis enables us to apprehend the complexity of the European area and invites us to examine the boundaries or lack of it that separate territories. The conference also seeks to analyze the changes in the concepts of border and border control; to understand how residents in the Schengen Area – “native” or immigrants – build their national and transnational identity; to assess the evolution of mobility within the Schengen Area, which in turn allows us to perceive the relations between regions, states and individuals and to explain the various impacts of the Schengen agreements in the territories, people and societies and their border experiences.

The governance of the Atlantic ports (XIVth-XXIth century)
Policies and economic dynamics
Ports and port cities have stood out over time as important categories of historical analysis. The study of port systems and the internal dynamics of European ports, side by side with navigation circuits and international commerce has generated a vast literature. In the contexts of the first and the second globalization processes it is essential to develop crossing studies to place ports within globally articulated networks. The relationships between European, African and American Atlantic seaports are fundamental to the understanding of overall dynamics related to the economy, population, policy and culture. A wide European historiography confirms the importance of the seaport spaces and dynamics. This tends to be reinforced with innovative contributions, focused for the last decades upon port systems analysis.

As a part of national financial arrangements for higher education, income contingent student loans have been implemented in many countries (including Australia, Sweden, South Africa, England and Thailand, among others). These schemes are generally collected through income taxation systems and are repaid only when current income exceeds a specified level. This workshop aims at gathering internationally recognized experts on this issue, as well as French practitioners within higher education and within public policy, During the sessions, the results of high-quality applied research will be presented. The policy implications of these results will be discussed in a round table.

Fachtagung - Religionswissenschaften
Like other regions of the world, South-East Asia has, since the mid-1980s, seen the rise of a new “spirit of capitalism”, linked to the growth of a middle class. Various religious mass-organizations have developed new discourses on wealth and innovative techniques of financing. At their helm, we often find charismatic figures who are responding to the demands of those in search of meaning in an increasingly de-structured modern urban life setting. In doing so, these actors operate on a “spiritual marketplace” characterized by great fluidity and competition. This conference is to look at the different ways through which tensions between religious ethics and economic rationalization are negotiated, both ideologically and institutionally.

Movement of persons has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration, and the time has come for historians, along with political scientists, jurists, economists, sociologists and demographers, to discuss and draw some conclusions on its evolving conceptions and practical applications, placing both of them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration.
