Representation. Antagonism. Populism. Exploring Laclau’s Political Legacy

The present editorial attempt is meant to evaluate Laclau’s political legacy based on our assumption that at least three overarching concepts are to be explored: representation, antagonism and populism.

    Europe by Design

    Rethinking Projects and Policies

This panel/mini symposium sheds light on the ways in which projects concerning Europe have been shaped and how have been implemented from the beginning of the integration process to present day. From a theoretical, social and historical perspective, it considers a variety of actors operating in complex decision making processes; as well as the processes and the architectures affecting the design of the EU.

    Colloque - Époque moderne

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

    Entangled Transitions

Between Eastern and Southern Europe 1960s-2014

In under two decades, authoritarian political systems collapsed across Europe – in the south of the continent in the 1970s, and then in the east between 1989 and 1991. Although much work has been done on these processes in each region, and comparative work carried out on post-authoritarian transitions and memories, there has yet to be any sustained scholarship that examines the ‘entangledness’ of these processes in the context of broader European and global processes of the late Cold War and its aftermath. Taking a longue durée approach, this conference will explore these inter-relationships between the 1960s and the present day. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of state socialism and the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the transition from dictatorship on the Iberian Peninsula and in Greece: an ideal time to consider the relationship between these processes that have been central to modern European history.

Revisiting the Historical Connections between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a Global Context

The workshop posits that after 1945, the interconnectedness of questions of nutrition, agriculture and poverty became a central aspect of international governance, and that issues of food and agriculture posed particular challenges to national sovereignty. We thus approach the history of FAO as a history of the ideas and practices of economic and social ‘development’ embedded in local, regional, national, and global contexts and with implications on all these levels. We propose to examine the process by which the FAO facilitated the institutionalisation and globalisation of debates on agricultural production and food security, how it integrated previous international and transnational networks, and how it navigated the tension between agrarian commercialisation and rural welfare during the Cold War and Decolonisation.

    EU Regional Policies

Its number 11 is now being prepared, to be released in the second semester of 2014, and its theme will be "EU Regional Policies".
