Ethnomusicology and heritage - SEMEP 2016/2017

    SEMEP 2016/2017

Fourth Annual Conference of the International Federation for Public History

History is a public issue. Historical knowledge and practice is not limited to academic settings. History is also produced and shared in a wide range of settings by professional and non-professional historians alike. Museums and other exhibiting places, films and documentaries, historical novels, anniversaries and commemorations, re-enactments and living history, public policies, transitional justice commissions, television, radio, websites, and social media, are some of the venues in which history comes alive. All these settings stimulate interaction and collaboration with large audiences, turning historians into public historians.

    Meanings of rituals

Incense and religion in ancient societies

Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism

Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography

This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

The world of Gennaro Magri - dance, music and opera in the Enlightenment

    Into the woods

Overlapping perspectives on the history of “ancient forests”

In ecological, economic and social terms, “ancient forests” play numerous roles. Their definition varies not only from country to country but also according to disciplinary fields. Studying “ancient forests” can involve separating “old-growth forests” from “ancient woodland”, forests that have disappeared and, in the case of “current forests”, those that are not actually very old at all! This conference aims to exchange views and ideas on “ancient forests” including both retrospective and prospective issues. Better understanding their past highlights the key issues of their status, protection and promotion in our current societies and opens up new perspectives about the future of « ancient forests ». Foresters, planners, developers, ecologists, biologists, agriculturalists, geographers, historians, philosophers, ethnologists, cartographers, archaeologists, archaeobotanists, sociologists etc., from all backgrounds, are invited to join this debate about our various and varying concepts of “ancient forests”.

“Mapping Architectural Criticism” Second International Workshop Bologna

This call for papers is for the second of three international workshops planned by the Mapping.Crit.Arch Project to foster scholarship on the history of architectural criticism and facilitate exchanges between scholars active in this field of research. Conceived as milestones of the research project, these workshops intend to go beyond somewhat widespread interpretations that invoke either the specificity of architectural criticism or its partial overlapping with other forms of writing. The workshops also want to challenge simplistic views that suggest the crisis of architectural criticism if not its entire demise. The second workshop will focus on the actors and “vehicles” of architectural criticism.

Confronting scholarly and popular cultures to contribute to the stabilisation of Congo

Contemporary art as mediation of ecological crisis

6th STS (Science and Technology Studies) Italia Conference

In this session of the 6th STS Italia Conference on Sociotechnical Environments, we will consider how contemporary art addresses new questions to environmental issues; how it questions our relation with nature and technique; and how artistic creation may indicate new kinds of answers to contemporary ecological issues. This call is open to various disciplinary fields: contribution proposals could aim to describe kinds of knowledge that contemporary art contribute to produce in the field of ecology, as to trace a history of the dialogue between environmental issues and artistic creations, and, more generally, on case studies questioning the notions of art, technique and environmental issues.

    Typical Venice?

    Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries

What are “Venetian” commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts. This conference focuses on the question of how Venice designed and exported its own identity through all kinds of its goods.

Heraldry and papacy - from the Middle Ages to the Modern period

    The Predatory Museum

39th annual International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM) symposium

Have visitors ever wondered how museums acquire the wonderful things they present to the enquiring public? It is certain that some do, but how many would see the museum as a predator?  Would they ever recognize the museum activity of acquiring the valued collections that are put on display as the result of a predatory undertaking? It is true that museums are discerning but eager recipients of gifts offered by individuals who cross their threshold and who are willing to donate or bequeath their treasured possessions to their local museum. These ongoing acts of charity aside, museums have other avenues of collection-building which they explore and have done so since their inception.

History, approaches and comparative methodologies in France and Italy
