  Archaeology at the birth of international relations

  Bulletin de l’Institut Pierre Renouvin, no. 46, autumn 2017

  Les travaux portant sur l’archéologie sont majoritairement l’apanage des historiens de l’art et des archéologues. Peu d’historiens se confrontent directement à ce bel objet qui apparaît pourtant de manière récurrente dans nos archives : parcours individuels, négociations et traités… Nous souhaitons, dans le cadre du Bulletin de l’Institut Pierre Renouvin, inverser cette tendance et placer l’archéologie au cœur de travaux d’histoire des relations internationales. Mettre en valeur les particularités de cette approche historique nous permettra de voir en quoi les perspectives offertes par cette discipline apportent un nouvel éclairage, qui vient nourrir et compléter la production existante.

  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  The Warndt mining district: ore ressources, mining, territories at the boundaries of Lorraine and Saarland

  This event should allow the meeting of researchers: mainly geologists, mineralogists, archaeologists, historians, in order to cross the different point of views on both ancient and recent archaeological discoveries at first, to develop a multidisciplinary, diachronic and international research program in a  second time. Various speakers will address their issues related to the study of this mining district.

  Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

  Surviving the End of the World as We Know It

  Historical and Geographical Perspectives

  Great natural disasters which have struck populations (floods, hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, massive droughts, etc.) are part of the intricate history of human communities and their relationship with their environment, contributing to social and cultural changes within these communities. This call for papers focuses on a multidisciplinary  approach and suggests that applicants: Study and investigate the various responses given to disasters in ancient and modern times; Analyze the evolution of public policies dealing with natural risks and their consequences on land planning; Study long term factors of adaptation to risk which reveal a territory’s resilience; Provide a specific interest in coastal regions.
