Individual and Collective Identities in New France
In collaboration with Simon Fraser University and several religious orders who played a founding role in the history of Montreal, the Collectif d’Anthropologie et d’Histoire du Spirituel sous l’Ancien Régime (CAHSA) organizes an interdisciplinary conference on the interaction between individual and collective spiritualities in New France. The conference will take place in Montreal from October 13th-15th, 2016.

Studying religion in Quebec - perspectives from here and elsewhere
Au Québec comme ailleurs, la religion est revenue au centre de l’actualité politique et au cœur des débats scientifiques. Qu’il s’agisse de la pluralisation ethnoreligieuse des sociétés, de la diversification postmoderne des expressions du croire, du renouvellement des demandes éthiques, de la republicisation des religions et des églises, de la poussée du populisme religieux ou plus largement de la mise en cause du paradigme moderniste de la sécularisation, les raisons ne manquent plus d’étudier la religion en société – s’il en fut jamais autrement. Afin de donner voix aux nombreux chercheurs d’ici et d’ailleurs qui étudient la religion au Québec, de faire mieux connaître leurs travaux, de stimuler les échanges, de favoriser les coopérations, et de soulever les défis et enjeux actuels et à venir, la Société québécoise pour l’étude de la religion organise, un symposium international et interdisciplinaire.

Over the past decade the scientific interest in relics and kindred artefacts has grown enormously. Without any doubt relics as well as relic shrines and associated objects have played a prominent role in European history since the introduction of Christianity. While in the past primary, secondary as well as tertiary relics were merely studied in relation to their religious and (art) historical background, recently the rise of a more scientific and archaeological approach is noticed. Nowadays researchers become more interested in the origin and nature of these sacred objects

Religions and the presidential elections in the United States
Catholics have long been an important force in American electoral politics even if they make up 21% of the American population. Could they be, compared to the other religious denominations, the game changer of the next elections ? Despite widespread agreement among scholars that the partisan behavior of Catholics has changed, there is much less consensus on the nature of that change, its permanence, and its causes. This symposium will review the historical patterns of Catholic partisanship and voting behavior, as well as those of the other denominations, discuss major perspectives on electoral change (Republican shift, Hispanic and Asian vote, interreligious alliances) and test there perspectives with the latest survey data.

El evento enfocará cuatro aspectos: la formación y el desarrollo de los discursos conservadores, su relación con el catolicismo, su carácter, a menudo, elitista y su orientación anticomunista.

Cette année, le dernier lundi du mois de 17 h 30 à 19 h, le séminaire des doctorants du CéSoR se penchera sur deux thèmes alternés, l’un à orientation théorique et l’autre à orientation méthodo-épistémologique. Une séance sur deux, le séminaire aura pour thème « Michel Foucault et les sciences sociales du religieux ». Le but de ces séances sera de réfléchir d’un point de vue interdisciplinaire aux divers apports des théories de Foucault, pour la recherche en sciences sociales du religieux aujourd’hui.
