Le network américain The CW fête cette année ses 10 ans d'expérience. Petit network issu de la fusion de The WB et de UPN, The CW a défini au fil des années une politique originale dans le paysage audiovisuel américain. La diversification de sa programmation mais aussi son originalité ont attiré un public, certes plus réduit que sur les grands networks, mais faisant preuve d'un attachement très fort à la chaîne. Cette journée souhaiterait ainsi se consacrer aux productions de The CW mais aussi, de manière plus transversale, à la chaîne elle-même. Le cas spécifique de The CW permettra d'analyser des séries peu abordées dans les travaux scientifiques mais aussi de recouper les approches pour réfléchir à la manière dont on peut aborder ce type d'objets.

Charles C. Eldredge prize 2017
The Smithsonian American Art Museum is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Charles C. Eldredge Prize. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter (not to exceed one page in length) explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Nominations by authors or publishers for their own books will not be considered.

Terra Foundation for American art international publication grant
The College Art Association (CAA) and Terra Foundation for American Art invite applications for the 2017 Terra Foundation for American art international publication grant. The grant provides financial support for the publication of book-length scholarly manuscripts on the history of American art from circa 1500 to 1980 in the current-day geographic United States.

A transatlantic dialogue
On the occasion of the launch of Picturing, the first volume of the Terra Foundation Essays, a new publication series exploring themes of critical importance to the history of arts and visual culture of the United States, the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte, Paris, and the Terra Foundation for American Art are jointly organizing a conference to further the transatlantic dialogue about what pictures are and what they do. This conference invites speakers to reflect on the differences and convergences between the intellectual traditions of visual studies and Bildwissenschaft. Are there ways to think about pictures anew by bringing these models more closely together? Does the move away from visuality towards the material offer possibilities for overcoming early differences between these two approaches?

Cet événement académique va essayer de questionner le rapport intime existant entre le cinéma et la musique. Cette alchimie qui unit ces deux arts nous semble mériter réflexion. Un film met en scène une histoire, un énoncé, une forme, représentant d’une façon ou d’une autre le monde, avec un souci de fidélité ou de prise de distance. La musique, elle, crée un objet complémentaire, un sens second greffé sur le premier, qui vient l’enrichir peut-être ou l’embellir en le « couvrant » de texture sous forme de notes...

De la politique des auteurs (cinéma) à la remise en question de l'auteur (cinéma et audiovisuel)
Cette journée d'études qui se déroulera le jeudi 21 avril 2016 à l'université Paul-Valéry de Montpellier aura pour questionnement principal la notion d'auteur au cœur de la création cinématographique et audiovisuelle, notamment à travers le prisme particulier de la sérialité.

Omniprésence des images, autonomisation de la perception, faillite ou reconstruction de la mémoire, explosion du virtuel : avec le numérique notre monde se repeuple de clones et de fantômes. On sait combien chaque introduction d’une technologique nouvelle produit ses fictions et ses fantasmes (voir depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle les cas du téléphone, du télégraphe, de la radio puis le développement des communications mais il s’agirait ici d’interroger les manières dont les technologies contemporaines, les inventions d’artistes, les concepts critiques reformulent la question de l’étrangeté technologique.

This 2016 workshop on contemporary US-UK photography will take on the notion of censorship. With photography as its starting point, this edition aims to extend the debate to include the contemporary image on the whole. It is interested in the intermedial forays of other artistic forms in the practice of photographers (art installations, video and/or audio productions, performance, urban art practices, text/image interactions). How does the very artistic form/medium become in itself a means of expression and commitment when confronted with censorship, a means to create unity against censorship, a tool for identity expression of a group or of a minority, to circumvent constraints, or thrive upon these limits and generate creative impetus from them?
