Tamil and Tamil Akam at the Crossroads

The objective of the conference is to examine Tamil Nadu as an example of a geographical space where multiple cultures met, exchanged, and absorbed from outside, while Tamil maintained until recent times its unique ancient traditions. To bring together an international cadre of scholars who work in diverse disciplines that focus on a single region is to create new knowledge as is the way of any innovative conference. The fourteen scholars participating in the event bring a range of disciplinary perspectives to the idea of Tamil and Tamil Akam as a crossroads of cultures and a locus of international exchange in both the arts and sciences.

Rôles et valeurs du Menzuma : panégyriques islamiques en Éthiopie et dans la Corne de l'Afrique

The songs of praise called menzuma, sung by a soloist accompanied by a choir and percussion are popular all over the Muslim areas of Ethiopia where the practice of Sufi Islam is still well rooted. The purposes of this workshop are many : to study Menzuma genre from different perspectives and in the different languages in which it is performed ; to study the role of Menzuma as a social performance in public or private spheres ; to understand the relations between the oral performance and the written text of Menzuma ; to explore the different levels of significance of Menzuma texts, i.e. Religious, moral, historical, artistic, etc. ; to observe the circulation, exchange and transformations of Menzuma among different societies of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

"African Churches" in Europe. Mediating Imaginations

"African Churches" have been present in Europe for some decades now, but their developments have taken a new dimension with the intensification of African migrations to Europe in the 80s and 90s. Beyond their doctrinal and institutional diversity and divergences, these churches have in common to be carried by African populations who all too often remain stigmatized and marginalized at the social, political and juridical levels. From the diverse issues of identity, networks and circulations of religious actors, relations to the public sphere, and gender, contributions to the conference will seek to show how African Christian worlds of Europe are now situated at the very heart of dynamics of reconfiguration of African imaginations of Europe, but also of European imaginations of Africa.

Les camps de réfugiés palestiniens en Jordanie

A Lasting Temporariness: Population, Space and Social Practices, 1990-2010

This one day workshop will focus on the social and spatial organization of the camps, the social practices of their inhabitants, and the influences, interpretations and effects of what we call a lasting temporariness on the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. Due to their significance and status, the camps represent key social spaces for exploring patterns of interaction between different religious groups and national minorities, for examining governance, for studying development and planning issues (infrastructure and services), for mapping the constitution of territories and identities, and for analyzing the development of an intricate network of economic and political connections inside and outside of their spaces.

CORPUS, Groupe international d'études culturelles sur le corps organise les 4 et 5 novembre 2010, en partenariat avec l'université de médecine et de pharmacie Victor Babes de Timisoara et l'association d'anthropologie roumaine ACT, un séminaire transdisciplinaire « Acest corp ireal / Ce corps ir-réel ». Au cours de cette rencontre, médecins, anthropologues et spécialistes de diverses formes d'expression aborderont les thèmes de la douleur, des métaphores et des représentations corporelles.

Cocoon communities: Togetherness in the 21st century

In this volume, we wish to look at a special case of togetherness, which we propose to call cocoon communities. Cocoon communities neither represent nor correspond to the ideal-type of community. At first sight, they do not seem to have much in common with communal characteristics. Such communities may actually be invisible for outsiders, yet a closer look might reveal some substantial similarities with ‘canonical’ forms of community.

Ce panel cherche à interroger les manières dont les rites collectifs, les rites du cycle de vie individuel et les fêtes calendaires participent à la construction émotionnelle des lieux. Des études de cas concernant différents lieux et formes de rituels sont attendues, ainsi que des présentations plus méthodologiques ou théoriques.This panel would like to question the ways individual life-cycle or collective rituals and calendric festivals contribute to the emotional making of places. Case studies concerning different ritual shapes and places are welcome together with more theoretical or methodological presentations.

Appel à contribution pour le colloque « Les communautés fermées entre innovation et fortification urbaines » organisé conjointement par Fondation Braillard Architectes, Genève, l'Institut de géographie de l'université de Lausanne et la chaire « Urbanisme et gouvernance » de l'Institut des sciences de l’environnement de l'université de Genève. Le colloque se déroulera le 8 avril 2011 à Genève. Les propositions de contributions sont attendues d'ici au 18 octobre 2010.

Le passage de l'Empire ottoman aux États modernes

The conference aims to explore various aspects of the communal organization in the Ottoman Empire for regions such as Asia Minor, Middle East and the Balkans, and to present the changes that occurred within the religious communities during the 19th century and particularly during the period from Tanzimat reforms until the First World War. Key questions in relation to the modernization process of the Ottoman state and the functioning of religious communities, are a) how does the Sublime Porte understand the process of structuring a modern state with respect to religious communities, b) who is responsible for the modern institutions: the state or the religious communities, c) what is the reaction of the religious communities regarding the modernization process d) why and in what way the religious communities are changing on the light of this process.

Tourisme et séductions de la différence

Anthropologists have studied how separations between ‘Self’ and ‘Other’ become part of various public and personal aesthetics of everyday life. They have studied how the idea of differences between people, temporalities and places enable social actors to constitute and maintain selfhood within a wider cosmological scheme of social life. As tourism research spreads into the social sciences, this Conference will tackle one of the central ontological and phenomenological premises of tourism, the fascination with the idea of 'Others'. it will explore the seductive powers underlying this immersion of Self in the Other and the forms of social life and exchange its shapes at different scales of social life. It will bring together around 200 academics from more than 30 countries presenting 150 papers during four days. It also includes a film festival, various study tours, an ‘intergenerational’ networking event and a book fair.

Dans l'esprit du CHAGS (International Conference on Hunting and Gathering Societies) malheureusement interrompu à l'issue de sa 9ème édition (Edimbourg 2002), cette conférence internationale réunira les plus grands spécialistes et étudiants travaillant sur les chasseurs-cueilleurs du bassin du Congo . Cette rencontre interdisciplinaire sera l'occasion de faire un état des lieux de l'avancée des recherches sur les chasseurs-cueilleurs de cette partie de l'Afrique, avec un accent particulier accordé au devenir de ces sociétés dans un monde en plein changement.
