  Biocosmos - Our sense of place, our sense of life in the universe

  Planet scientists and exoplanet astronomers are re-shaping our understanding of the universe, presenting a fascinating cosmos filled with places and destinations, not an empty void. At the same time, Earth physicists and biologists design models of self-sustainable ecosystems such as Biosphere 2 and the Mars/Lunar Greenhouse, with the goal of engineering bio-regenerative mini-worlds that can function on their own. As these scientific revolutions unfold, with distant spaces and global life systems as objects of “field work”, what counts as the “human environment”? How do we, as individuals and societies, relate to spaces, things, and processes we do not or cannot experience directly and which we see as “extreme” or “beyond” human?

  Poetics of (mis)understanding: Culture-making potential of interference in artistic communication

  The conference will take place on December 7-8, 2017 at the Institute of Literary Research (Nowy Świat 72, Pałac Staszica) in Warsaw, Poland. We are interested primarily in exploring the positive aspects of misunderstandings in communication – unlike the approaches that have traditionally emphasized the destabilizing and destructive impact of such interferences. We would like to show the mistakes and misunderstandings in communication as an undervalued source of innovation in culture. We treat misunderstanding and various semantic shifts as mechanisms of intercultural contact that are permanent, inherent, and impossible to eliminate; they are inscribed in the broadly defined translation process.

  Gouverner par la prédiction ?

  Modèles, données et algorithmes dans et pour l'action publique

  L’action publique est traversée par des intentions d’anticiper les situations futures, pour mieux définir les décisions à prendre au présent. Face à l’incertitude et aux risques, elle reprend à son compte la pratique scientifique qui consiste à calculer et modéliser ces situations pour mieux anticiper, sinon les prédire. Que le futur soit objet de connaissance et d'action n'est pourtant pas chose nouvelle. Quelle est la caractéristique du rapport politique contemporain aux futurs ? Qui prédit, comment et avec quels effets sur les politiques conduites, les controverses qui les entourent, les rapports de pouvoir ? Comment les différentes pratiques de computation et de prédiction, des modèles computationnels au traitement algorithmique des données, s’institutionnalisent-elles, ou en viennent à être contestées, et changent ?

  First international seminar for post-graduate students in Sport History

  A first international seminar for PHD and post-graduate students in sport history (political and cultural perspectives) supervised by Prof. Dave Day (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Prof. J.-F. Loudcher (Bordeaux) is planned at Bordeaux between the 11^th September and the 13^th September 2017. It is the first of a series of seminars between the two universities (the next will be in Manchester) and will provides an opportunity to establish new relationsships and partnerships with students ands researchers from all over the world. In addition, this one will have a workshop on European project research funding on cultural and political sport coaching in a comparative way for an application in 2018. It is possible to just attend the seminar and the workshop.

  The international conference The Museum Reader, organised by the Art History Institute of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Museu do Chiado, aims to propose thematic lines and noteworthy points to stimulate thought, reflection and debate of new realities, practices and working conditions identified in museums in the 21^st century.
