Third International Congress on Desert Economy

The ultimate purpose of the International Congress on Desert Economy – Dakhla, is to be a scientific and multidisciplinary platform on desert and Sahara economy development, in order to contribute effectively to the good governance and in the sustainable development of desert regions, by stimulating meetings between all stakeholders on a global scale, with a view to fostering cooperation and partnership, among (Sahara) desert countries (Africa, the Gulf States, the United States of America, China, Australia...), with the aim of creating a conducive environment to the exchange of experiences, expertise and innovation, around themes related to desert and Sahara economy development, such as: Tourism and travel industry, agriculture, renewable energy, raw materials, transportation and logistics, sea and ocean economy, technology and innovation, entertainment and sport economy, cultural and intangible heritage, nature and environment.

This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

Insights on the Americas

For its 11th issue, RITA proposes to interrogate the links between power and media in the Americas. Several areas of debate can be suggested, although they should not be considered as exclusive. Articles making a critical analysis of official media as well as opposition media, in varied historical and geographical contexts, will of course be welcome. Other articles may deal with the treatment of popular movements by the media. Critical reflections on the relationship between media and economic power are also encouraged. The Thema section can also include analysis of the current diversification of information media by focusing, for instance, on the emergence of “alternative” media on the Internet, or on the power of fake news over the construction of collective representations.

Languages of urbanization and visions of the city

This section will focus on the representations of urban spaces and urban lives in the Americas, with special regard to the languages and the social practices that convey – or that have conveyed in the past – the idea of “making the city”. We are especially interested both in grassroots movements of urban resistance and in counter-hegemonic representations of the urban space. We welcome contributions on practices of re-appropriation of the city, on the strategies of resistance to the processes of gentrification, on the relationship between urban space and subaltern groups (minorities and/or subcultures) and on the ways in which the urban space has been represented, reimagined or invented in literature, cinema, comics, music, photography, television, visual arts.

Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16^th to the 18^th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

Merchants, jurists and other "intermediate groups" in Early Modern Southern Europe

Merchants, farmers, jurists, clerks in large institutions, secretaries, independent landowners, local elites and highly sought master craftsmen, among many others, are individuals with an ambiguous social status. Looking at who was not born exactly noble, nor exactly commoner, but stood on the border between one world and the other, is one of the goals of this initiative. As part of a project developed in Portugal focusing on the Holy Office’s familiaturas, it will be held on September 16 and 17, 2015, a workshop at Escuela Española de Historia and Archaeological in Rome. Our aim is to select a total of 8 applicants, that will be joined by 4 guest speakers, for a joint reflection on the dynamics and profiles of ‘intermediate groups’, as well as on the methodologies for their study in Early Modern Times.

Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. The objective of this colloquium will be to debate and analyze politics and the political by means of the different forms of language, discourse and practices that intervene in the construction of the social world. There are myriad examples of this in Chilean history. Taking history, political philosophy and political economy as the starting points, we invite doctoral candidates, researchers and academics to participate in this truly trans disciplinary space of debate, reflection and feedback whose goal is not only to unite a community of researchers into “the political” in the republican period but also to select the best works presented for a future publication in the format of a collective work or a special dossier of a scientific publication.
