The Iberian East Indies

Frontiers, Actors, Dynamics

The historiography of imperial Spain and of the Iberian-initiated first globalization has recently been renewed by the study of exchanges between Asia and America and of the Spanish Pacific. The purpose of this one-day seminar is to further this historiographical renewal and to shed some new light on the Iberian East Indies, at a time when Spain and Portugal were the two main European powers in the region. The focus will be put on exchanges, dynamics of cooperation and rivalry between empires and also between various key actors: missionaries, merchants, soldiers and officials. The aim is thus to improve our understanding of the multiple connections between the Asian territories of both empires.

Sources and methods for the study of economic inequality in preindustrial societies: The Iberian Peninsula (1300-1600)

The course is organized around three daily sessions, in the morning and afternoon. In the morning, well-known scholars in this field will be in charge of introducing several questions as to economic inequalities. Session 1 will be focused on documentary sources, while Session 2 on methods, and Session 3 on case studies. Afternoon sessions will be open to the participation of PhD candidates and recent doctors in economic history or general history who wish to present their ongoing doctoral research for discussion with the rest of the participants.

Estado e novas perspectivas", onde se reunirão pesquisadores de todo o mundo para debaterem sobre o spatial turn das humanidades na segunda metade do século passado. Este evento interdisciplinar reunirá geógrafos, filólogos, historiadores, filósofos e outras disciplinas relacionadas para rever o estado atual das spatial humanities, partilhar diferentes abordagens e métodos de pesquisa e debater sobre o seu futuro.

Ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, houve uma reorientação do olhar humano e do interesse científico, o que aconteceu para observar e serem observado mais no espaço do que no tempo, como aconteceu anteriormente. En los últimos años, ha crecido enormemente el interés por el estudio de las creaciones artísticas, especialmente literarias, poniendo el foco en la simbología o la relevancia de los lugares. El crecimiento de disciplinas como las mencionadas puede ser percibido a través de su contacto con otras disciplinas emergentes, como las humanidades digitales, también de reciente aparición. La simbiosis entre ellas ha dado lugar a las humanidades espaciales o al deep mapping, entre otras. Cómo han evolucionado estas teorías en los últimos años, qué ha cambiado en nuestra concepción del término o cómo vivimos o nos relacionamos con el territorio?

Le V Congrès International de Mythocritique “Mythe et création audiovisuelle” est une initiative du Programme de Recherche Acis&Galatea, financé par la Communauté de Madrid et le Fonds Social Européen. Le Congrès s’organisera au tour de 4 sièges selon le thème: “Mythes germaniques” à l´université de Alcalá, “Mythes classiques” à l´université Autónoma, “Mythes bibliques” à l´université Francisco de Vitoria et “Mythes modernes” à l´université Complutense. Les chercheurs peuvent envoyer leur proposition de communication à un des 4 sièges. Leur objectif consistera à analyser le rôle du cinéma, les séries télévisées, les jeux vidéo dans la création et adaptation des mythes anciens, médiévaux et modernes et notre monde contemporain.

European Space Agency's Space History Conference

There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

Exclusion and social discipline in the Medieval city in Europe

14th international meetings of the Middle Ages in Nájera

In the late Middle Ages, exclusion became a basic instrument for urban governance, as it enabled lay and ecclesiastical leaders to maintain their control over urban dwellers on the basis of maintaining a certain social discipline and an “ordered” society. Thus, medieval urban society was defined as a community of values according to the ecclesiastical and secular legislation, and it was articulated as a political discourse, which was incorporated into the public sphere. The urban community had to adapt to a legal and ideological framework and to some parameters of behavior, in which exclusion from the community was a powerful communication tool of social discipline. Historians and Graduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts for research presentations or posters on topics related to “exclusion and social discipline in the Medieval European City”.

ICIQ3 - Third international conference on interpreting quality

ICIQ3, the third international conference on interpreting quality, will be held in the city of Granada, Spain, on 5, 6 and 7 October 2017. ICIQ3 is intended as a platform for fruitful dialogue on interpreting quality. It will bring together a variety of perspectives and promote exchange. The conference will address a number of topics, including, but not limited to the following: quality criteria in different interpreting settings, user expectations and needs, quality perception and quality measurement, quality assurance in the interpreting process, nonprofessional interpreting, method transfer across disciplines.

La celebración del congreso del 2017 se integra en un marco más amplio de trabajo, dedicado al estudio de aspectos como: la integración de la historia de España en el contexto europeo, la oposición a los totalitarismos, el fomento de la democracia, el cumplimiento de los derechos humanos, la construcción de la ciudadanía y la memoria como objeto de conocimiento. El Congreso nace de la relación y colaboración mutua entre Les Territoires de la Mémoire Liège y Territorios de la Memoria España, se enmarca en un espacio de trabajo dedicado al estudio de los totalitarismos, los derechos humanos, la democracia como valor fundamental, el concepto de ciudadanía, y la memoria como objeto de investigación, fundamentalmente en un ámbito europeo.

Entre os dias 23 e 25 de outubro de 2017, o Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) vai organizar o V Colóquio «A Nova Lisboa Medieval». A evocação comemorativa das conquistas de Lisboa, em 1147 e de Alcácer do Sal em 1217, é o pretexto para um debate mais amplo em torno, não apenas destes acontecimentos e do seu significado e impacto, mas de todo o contexto mais vasto que os envolve e explica, na diversidade dos caminhos que se desenharam e redesenharam, tanto no espaço peninsular como no quadro mais amplo que ligava o Ocidente e o Oriente.

The 5th international congress “Sport, doping and society” is organized by the Spanish Agency for Health Protection in Sport (AEPSAD) and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). Under the theme “Think Clean”, there will be presented the results of scientific researches and new methodologies in the field of doping in sport from the specific perspective of Human and Social Sciences. We believe that this initiative will contribute to identify the factors that influence the use of doping substances and methods. From this knowledge we hope to foster future prevention and doping control and to promote ethical behavior in sport.

The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance

Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

IV Congrès international de mythocritique

Mythe et émotions

Il existe une logique rationnelle mais aussi une logique émotionnelle, responsable de nombreuses actions que nous réalisons. La mythocritique aborde souvent les récits mythiques depuis une perspective structurelle, sociale, historique, etc. Cependant, elle ignore souvent le composant émotionnel. Il semblerait que la dimension affective, particulièrement présente dans notre société contemporaine, ne soit pas pertinente dans les études de mythologie. Le Congrès examinera le rôle que jouent les émotions aussi bien dans la structuration des récits mythiques que dans les procès de mythification de personnages et événements historiques. Le cadre de travail est l’étude des mythes anciens, médiévaux et modernes dans la littérature et les arts contemporains (depuis 1900).

TEMPLA invites international researchers into medieval art history and related disciplines to debate the concept and expression of “dynamic episcopal and canonical commemoration” which occurred in European episcopal sees during the medieval period. The concept of commemoration goes beyond the funerary to include all those works, activities and uses of space that transmit through time a record of bishops and canons, their institutions, and important lay people. These commemorative works, however, were grafted onto a common setting that was in use over a long period of time. Thus, each cathedral setting witnessed the emergence of different dynamics in terms of the interactions and intersections between individual and/or collective memory.

Grupos Intermédios no Sul da Europa, séculos XVI-XVIII

Negociantes, rendeiros, juristas, escrivães de grandes instituições, secretários, grandes lavradores de terras próprias, elites locais, mestres com dinheiro de diversas corporações de ofícios são pessoas com um estatuto social ambíguo. Olhar para quem não nasceu propriamente nobre, mas também não é exactamente plebeu, ou se situa nesta fronteira entre um sector e outro, é uma das funções deste colóquio. No âmbito de um projecto desenvolvido em Portugal em torno destes grupos, e que tem privilegiado as familiaturas do Santo Ofício, pretende-se selecionar 8 papers para um seminário de 2 dias. A estes juntar-se-ão 4 oradores convidados para uma reflexão conjunta sobre as dinâmicas e perfis destes grupos, bem como sobre as metodologias para os estudar no recorte cronológico indicado.
