Le Département de français et d'italien à l'université d'Arizona est ravi d'organiser ce colloque auquel tous les mastérants et doctorants en français sont invités à participer afin d'avoir l'opportunité de : présenter leur recherche lors d'une communication orale avec le format traditionnel de 20 minutes pour la communication suivie de 10 minutes pour les questions et commentaires, en français ou en anglais ; ou présenter leur recherche en cours dans une table ronde qui permettra une communication de 15 minutes suivie d'un véritable échange et retour d'information, en français ou en anglais ; s'inscrire à des ateliers ludiques de recherche sur deux thèmes différents (voir Ateliers ci-dessous) ; rencontrer d'autres étudiants et des professeurs ; assister à deux sessions plénières de chercheurs éminents portant sur des thématiques différentes ; assister à un film francophone pour l'ouverture du colloque le 23 février.

Cinco siglos de influencia cultural
Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire. The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

Tourism and Gentrification in the Metropolis
A wide literature analyzes the changes that affect contemporary metropolises trough the concept of gentrification, i.e. Urban regeneration policies, the New Build gentrification, the Return to the city movement, the Displacement patterns analysis. Although bibliography analyzes the extent of gentrification in tourist cities little attention has been paid to tourism and tourist traffic as main factors of gentrification in metropolitan areas, or to tourism as the central strategic focus of the regeneration policies. Tourism gentrification is difficult to analyze, as it is affected by the changing patterns of tourism flow; it is however a critical shaping force of socio-economic and contemporary urban landscapes.

Alexandre Koyré: Transatlantic perspectives
This symposium commemorates the 50th anniversary of Koyré's death by focusing on his legacy in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, pioneers of the history of science such as Thomas S. Kuhn, I. B. Cohen, Marshall Clagett, Gérald Holton or Charles Gillispie have all admitted his influence on the discipline. The participants will discuss Koyré's impact on the American intellectual landscape and the reception of his ideas among the historians and philosophers who sought to professionalize the teaching of the history of science in the United States.

Beyond French New Languages for African Diasporic Literature
In recent years, Africans from former French colonies in both the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan regions have been settling in countries other than France and writing in languages other than French. This break with the colonial and postcolonial habits of la Françafrique – the familiar bind of metropole and colony – has been going on for years and is now ripe for analysis. Writing in German, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages, these authors suggest new patterns of diasporic belonging and raise new questions about the postcolonial world. Issues of immigration, language choice, cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and world literature will be addressed. -

Colloque international – Montréal – 17 et 18 mai 2011. Vingt ans après la chute du mur de Berlin, la question de Robert Frost demeure entière : « les bonnes barrières font-elles les bons voisins ? ». Depuis la Grande muraille de Chine, amorcée au IIIe siècle avant J.-C. par la dynastie Qin, le mur d'Antonin érigé en Écosse par les Romains pour appuyer le mur d'Hadrien, le Limes romain, le « mur » est une des constantes – en Orient comme en Occident – qui ont marqué les frontières infra et inter-étatiques. C'est ce que ce colloque, rassemblant des chercheurs de quatre continents, des anthropologues, sociologues, juristes, politologues, artistes va explorer. -

Atlantic Catholicism: The French-American connection
The Catholic Church is a particularly valuable topic for pursuing an internationalized approach to the history of the United States. French Catholicism has played an important but largely neglected role in the history of the United States because so many of the sources are in French, and because of the dispersion of the archives on both sides of the Atlantic. The rich French sources on religious history found in American archives (including those at the University of Notre Dame) remain underexplored by scholars from either France or the United States. The goals of this colloquium include facilitating conversation among scholars studying the intersection of French and American Catholicism from colonial times through the twentieth century, and identifying fruitful areas for further research. -

Troisième atelier international de recherche
GigaNet (réseau académique sur la gouvernance globale de l'Internet - http://giga-net.org) organise son troisième atelier international de recherche sur le thème « Gouvernance internationale d'Internet : un champ de recherche pluridisciplinaire en construction », qui se tiendra à Montréal (Québec), Canada, les 30 et 31 mai 2010. Cet atelier est organisé en collaboration avec l'Association canadienne de communication et Media@McGill. Cet atelier représente une excellente opportunité pour la communauté scientifique internationale de se rencontrer et d'échanger régulièrement autour des travaux de recherche en cours sur ce thème. Il proposera également des tutoriaux sur la gouvernance globale d'Internet, ouvert aux chercheurs de différentes disciplines ainsi qu'à toute personne intéressée à comprendre les enjeux et développements internationaux dans ce domaine. -

Le colloque aura lieu à l’Université de Montréal les 12 et 13 mai 2010, dans le cadre du 78e congrès annuel de l’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).Le colloque sera suivi de la publication d'un dossier spécial dans la Revue internationale d'études canadiennes. -

The Western Society for French History
Founded in 1974, the Western Society for French History seeks to promote the study of French and Francophone history. Its international membership includes university faculty and graduate students, independent scholars and amateur historians in the general public from across the United States and Canada, as well as from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and many other countries. Drawing inspiration from the frontier spirit of the North American West, it brings together specialists in the study of France and French culture from a wide variety of interdisciplinary backgrounds, beginning with history, but also embracing literary studies, art and music history, as well as political theory, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. Since its formation, it has encouraged the exploration of French history through an openness to new methods of research, while also continuing to support more traditional fields of interest. Finally, the Society takes pride in its support of graduate education through its scholarship program. -

Les murs en relations internationales - Fences and Walls in International Relations
Depuis la Grande muraille de Chine, le mur d’Antonin ou celui d’Hadrien réalisé par les Romains, le Genkobori construit par les Japonais sur l’île de Kyushu, ou encore le Mur de Berlin durant la période contemporaine, le « mur » est une des clés constantes – en Orient comme en Occident - de la protection d’une entité constituée et souveraine. Plus récemment, avec la construction des murs en Palestine, à Chypre, autour de Ceuta et Melilla, au Sahara occidental, à la frontière mexicano-américaine, au Cachemire, à la frontière du Botswana, ces fortifications demeurent un symbole de sécurité dans les relations internationales. Pour séparer ou pour protéger, la version contemporaine du mur pourrait correspondre à la (re)polarisation du monde à la suite des attentats du 11 septembre et constitue le révélateur d’une nouvelle ère des relations internationales, fondée sur la « perception » de l’ennemi. -

Sciences et savoirs dans le monde atlantique francophone (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)
L'objectif de cette rencontre est de confronter diverses analyses portant sur la construction et la circulation des savoirs dans l’Atlantique francophone des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. En s’attachant à souligner certaines spécificités de l’histoire des savoirs dans l'Atlantique français de l'époque moderne, cet atelier abordera des thèmes aussi variés que la cartographie, la botanique, les savoirs médicaux ou les contacts entre savoirs africains, amérindiens et européens. Au-delà d’une réflexion d’ensemble sur les enjeux d’une telle histoire pour penser l’histoire coloniale française de l’époque moderne, une table ronde clôturera cette rencontre afin de situer cette histoire par rapport à celles, plus familières, des espaces coloniaux de la Grande-Bretagne et de l’Espagne. -
