Queering Friendship | citizenship, care and choice

Intimate Final Conference

Contrary to individualization theories that suggest the impoverishment of human relationships, theories of relationality recognize the increasing centrality of informal networks of solidarity and care. In this debate, friendship plays a fundamental role. The mutual implications of intimacy and citizenship need to be addressed, exploring the extent to which issues of LGBTQ friendship matter (or not) in being recognized as citizens. The centrality of friendship is even more striking when considering personal lives of trans and non-binary people, but also lesbian women, gay men and bisexual people, LGBTQ migrants and other intersecting, vulnerable groups. In particular, the way transgender people actively provide and receive different care between friends offers invaluable contributions to political debates and conceptual discussions around friendship and care as a key aspect of LGBTQ everyday life. Unveiling the richness of the blurred spaces of intimacy, the ways in which LGBTQ people produce alternatives to family-based forms of cohabitation are also of critical importance. LGBTQ lived experiences further contribute to destabilizing the family/friends and public/private binaries, whilst challenging heterocisnormative expectations about who legitimately belongs to the intimate sphere and who remains excluded and/or invisible.

2017 Mediterraneanist network (MedNet) workshop

The European association of social anthropologists (EASA) mediterraneanist network (MedNet) will held its 2017 workshop in cooperation with the University of Lisbon. Focusing on circumstances and conditions of change, the 2017 MedNet Workshop will bring together members of the EASA MedNet Network in an open forum with scholars and colleagues from the european anthropological community.

This panel focuses on researches into the embodiment of chronicity, with a special attention to controversies around the definition of chronicity and the promises of chronicization linked to innovations in therapies. In this panel we are both interested in analyses of biomedical research and of illness experiences.

Bodies in transition: Power, knowledge and medical anthropology

EASA Medical Anthropology Network – 2017

In 2017 the biannual conference of EASA Medical Anthropology Network will be hosted in Lisbon, Portugal, with the prospect of promoting a compact encounter with more plenaries and less parallel sessions. The purpose is to maximize the interweaving of our experiences and understandings across the different niches and orientations within medical anthropology and in exchange with neighboring fields; we hope that bringing back plenary sessions creates room for unpredicted synergies. Around 120 medical anthropologists from around the globe will meet at the University of Lisbon to debate current research and developments and discuss the field’s contribution to gain a broader and deepened understanding of the conference’s overarching topic.

Work on screen: social memories and identities through cinema

Since the early 20^th century, work in contemporary societies has suffered several processes of change, which, in the context of the current economic and employment crisis, demand equating the structuring of social identities that are built and modified through work. During this period, cinema has been a privileged vehicle for the creation and dissemination of representations on work and, therefore, the shaping of social memories. This international and multidisciplinary seminar aims at gathering and discussing contributions that analyse the social processes involved in the formation of work identities and representations through cinema. It welcomes papers that highlight the main continuities and discontinuities of work memory narratives from the early 20^th century to the present days, based on the analysis of specific films or bodies of films (both documentaries and fictions) and their reception.

In contemporary Europe, we are witnessing the vanishing of anti-racism from political cultures and academic discourses, in favour of an approach that intervenes on immigrants and minorities themselves via public rhetoric on integration. This conference will thus bring together an international community engaging in debates on racism and anti-racism to discuss the analytical approaches and main findings of the European research project TOLERACE - The semantics of tolerance and (anti-)racism in Europe: public bodies and civil society in comparative perspective, coordinated by the Centre for Social Studies.

Convivialidade e super-diversidade a nível local

Our principal aim is to describe, analyze and compare new super-diverse convivial contexts, as they relate to the process of migrations shaping new cultural realms. Our approach does not involve the idealization of harmonic intercultural relations but considers convivial contexts as new fields of intercultural tensions and interactions as an attempt to understand their dynamics and the social, historic and personal factors that lead to willingness to coexist with ethnic heterogeneity or to reject it. Consequently, it envisions applying an innovative framework to understanding intercultural relations among national and migrant populations. From the perspective of social topography, the new convivial cultures are not associated with a specific geographic space. They correspond to different public contexts in which people with links to various ethnic or cultural groups interact.

Globalization and mobility have remodeled the relations between sound and space through emotionalization and instrumentalization. The panel aims to highlight the new connections between sound and space, taking into account the dynamics of detaching and repositioning sound and place today.

10th International Congress of the Société internationale d'ethnologie et de flokore

The ways in which people construct their views, opinions, values and practices are constantly being re-negotiated and re-interpreted in various creative forms. The 10th SIEF International Congress intends to elucidate and develop perspectives on this topic by focusing on the making of places, and invites colleagues and other scholars to present new perspectives on how people's lives, memories, emotions and values interact with places and localities.

Culture nationale et mondialisation : articulations et interactions

Colloque EGOS 2010 sur la mondialisation, session 14

Dans le contexte de la mondialisation, nombre de pratiques d’outils de gestions et plus largement, d’idées, sont perçus comme globalisés. Dans cette perspective, il revient au « local » de s’approprier ces outils et pratiques avec la possibilité de les « glocaliser ». De fait le local apparait un peu comme un chainon manquant dans les relations entre le « global et le local ». Le thème 14 du colloque EGOS 2010 considère les interactions entre le global et le local en plaçant le local au centre de l’analyse. Nous sollicitons des communications portant sur des études contextualisées de situations permettant d’expliciter ces interrelations entre le local et le global. Les travaux ethnographiques sont particulièrement bienvenus.
