Public History - PhD positions

The PhD students will join the Public History as the New Citizen Science of the Past (PHACS) project hosted at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) and will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr Thomas Cauvin. Focusing on the production of history with a public perspective, public history has developed as one of the most dynamic international fields of the historical discipline. In collaboration with cultural institutions and universities all over Europe, PHACS studies, researches, but also develops, constructs and evaluates the impact of public participation, coproduction, and shared authority for history-making. Connecting digital participatory practices issued from citizen sciences and crowdsourcing to history-making, PHACS is contributing to reshaping public history methodology.

Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity

The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Capturing Europe in Digital Sources: New Approaches for European Integration History?

Call for Papers 15th History of European Integration Research Society (HEIRS)

Over the last decades, calls to “provincialise” the historiography of Europe have shaped the historiographical debate and led to new perspectives on the history of European integration (Patel 2018, François and Serrier, 2017). Digital approaches might offer historians the opportunity to do just that. With the digitisation of historical materials, such as the press, historians may broaden the scope of the classical source corpus in European historiography, by relying for instance on keyword search and collecting an ample range of press articles dealing with Europe, as Florian Greiner did in 2014. To provide another example, Frédéric Clavert in his project UNSURE resorted to digitally born archives of newsgroups to analyse the discussions on Europe in the 1990s-2000s, to shed light on the opposition to the European integration outside of mass media. These examples display significant efforts to meet the challenges of European integration historiography and led us to invite young researchers and PhD students to share their research using digitised/digital sources or digital tools on European integration history: How can the digitisation of sources and digital tools help face the challenge of ‘capturing Europe’?

The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) announces a Summer School co-organised with the European University Institute (Florence) and the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (Frankfurt), to be held at the Maison Robert Schuman in Luxembourg City from 22^nd to 26^th June 2020. This Summer School invites to test digital tools and methods for oral history and stresses how digital oral sources contribute to narratives in European Integration History.

Mixed arbitral tribunals, 1919–1930

An experiment in the international adjudication of private rights

The creation of a system of Mixed Arbitral Tribunals (MATs) was a major contribution of the post-WWI peace treaties to the development of international adjudication. Numerically speaking, the 36 MATs were undoubtedly the busiest international courts of the interwar period. Taken together, they decided on more than 70,000 cases, mostly covering private rights. The MATs are similarly remarkable from a procedural point of view. First, their respective rules of procedure were so detailed that contemporaries described them as 'miniature civil procedure codes'. Second, in a departure from most other international courts and tribunals, they also allowed individuals whose rights were at stake to become involved in the proceedings before them.

Schedule for autumn term of 2018

“FinLux” is a series of seminars held on a monthly basis and focusing on the history of the Luxembourg financial centre. The fundamental theme of the seminars is a reflection on which topics, actors, sources, and methods can be used to write the history of the Luxembourg financial centre. From its inception, the C²DH has decided to make the history of the Luxembourg financial centre one of its main research priorities. 'Finlux' is a place for researchers to discuss ongoing research projects in banking and financial history in a broad sense.

Psychiatry in the 19th and 20th centuries from a transnational perspective

In recent years the buzzword in historical research has been “transnational history”. Although over the past 15 years some historians have begun to integrate this perspective into the history of medicine and psychiatry, especially with respect to colonial history, this research area remains underdeveloped. It goes without saying that there have been transnational contacts and transfers of knowledge in the psychiatric field — translations of books, international conferences, correspondence, memberships in associations, international travel — but research on these processes remains rare. This raises the urgent question of how to approach research on psychiatric history with a transnational framework in mind.

Benelux: Europe and the Cold War

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War

What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.

Politics, Societies, Space) seeks to hire a PhD Candidate (m/f) to join a multiannual research project, entitled "Material Culture and Spaces of Remembrance. A Study of Cemeteries in Luxembourg in the Context of the Greater Region" (Acronym: R.I.P.). The project examines changes in sepulchral culture and social transformation processes concerning individualisation, pluralisation, secularisation as well as de- and resacralisation. The project also pertains to spatal and urban development as cemetery areas undergo significant changes in allocation.
