The Illuminated Legal Manuscript: Production, Circulation and Use in Medieval Europe

International Workshop of the research team Ius Illuminatum

The workshop has the aim of giving an overview of the progress of research regarding illuminated legal manuscripts in Europe with the aim of carrying out a reflection on the methodological implications and on the practical and theoretical challenges that such research entails. During the Workshop, different case of study related to some regions of the European territory will be analyzed with a particular attention to what concerns the production, use and circulation of the different manuscripts examined. The Workshop also aims to question the potential offered by new technologies and the interdisciplinary approach in the study of the illuminated legal manuscript in order to overcome the limits and open up innovative and fruitful research paths.

Mendicants on the margins

A one-day symposium on the theme of “Mendicants on the Margins” will take place at University College Cork on the 27 June 2018. It is organised as part of the IRC-funded project “Spiritual Infrastructure, Space and Society: The Augustinian Friars in Late Medieval Ireland”. Speakers from Ireland and abroad will tackle a variety of aspects relating to the geenral theme on Mendicants on the Margins, from mendicant orders in geographical margins, the lesser-known orders such as the Augustinian friars, female communities and the Franciscan Third Order, to mendicant communities on the margins of the traditional model of urban mendicancy, such as foundations in non-urban environments, and aspects of mendicant studies challenging the traditional historiography of mendicant orders.

Abraham Ibn Ezra, un savant à la croisée des cultures arabe, hébraïque et latine du XIIe siècle

In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

In the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period

The brain has, throughout history, been considered an important achievement in the creation of man, although often secondary to the soul and the heart. Our knowledge about how the brain has been conceived in the past is, however, very fractional, especially for the late Medieval and early modern periods. This conference looks to re-situate the question of knowing the brain anew in a dialogue between medicine (anatomy, physiology and pathology) and natural philosophy (inter alia physics, biology and psychology).

The Face of the Dead and the Early Christian World

The theme chosen for this meeting is the study of funerary images in the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central question will a reflection on the function of the funerary images in a broad sense, but also their impact on the early christian world. The choice of the chronological time also shows the second intention of the colloquium: this is an attempt to explain why the ancient funerary tradition of the image will eventually disappear, replaced by other figures of the representative functions. Through various media - from the mosaic and painting, through sculpture and ending with gilded glasses - there will be presented one of the nodal representation of the self: the human face on the border between life and death.

Toponymie et perception de l'espace en Égypte de l'Antiquité au Moyen Âge

La toponymie est un outil essentiel pour comprendre les liens entre l’espace égyptien et les différentes cultures qui s’y sont succédé. D’une part pour appréhender la manière dont cet espace était géré et organisé par les différents pouvoirs et d’autre part pour aborder la façon dont il était perçu. L’étude de la toponymie égyptienne sur le temps long – de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge – permet ainsi d’envisager continuités et ruptures dans les différents systèmes toponymiques qui se sont superposés (administratifs, religieux) et / ou succédé (pharaonique, grec, copte, arabe) dans cet espace. Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif d’interroger, grâce à l’intervention de spécialistes du monde antique et médiéval, les processus de nomination à l’oeuvre dans la toponymie, ainsi que les mécanismes de gestion et d’appropriation des territoires de l’espace égyptien.

Quatrièmes rencontres internationales des doctorants en études byzantines

L’Association des étudiants du monde byzantin (AEMB) présente la quatrième édition des rencontres annuelles internationales des doctorants en études byzantines qui aura lieu les 21 et 22 octobre 2011 à l'Institut national d'histoire de l'art de Paris de Paris. Organisées sur deux jours, ces rencontres internationales rassembleront des étudiants de troisième cycle, français et étrangers, travaillant sur la civilisation byzantine, quels que soient leur champ de recherche et leur domaine de spécialisation (histoire, histoire de l'art, archéologie, philologie, ...).

Dans le cadre du programme ANR « La création d'un mythe médiéval d'Alexandre le Grand dans les littératures européennes » et avec le soutien de la MESHS de Lille, aura lieu le 4 mars 2011 à l'Institut historique allemand (8, rue du Parc-Royal, 75003 Paris) une journée d'études intitulée « Le voyage d'Alexandre le Grand au Paradis terrestre dans les littératures médiévales : Orient et Occident, regards croisés ».

Cinquième journée d'études Chartae Burgundiae Medii Aevi (CBMA)

La cinquième journée d'études CBMA, le 28 janvier 2011, sera consacrée aux actes cisterciens et prémontrés. Parmi les différentes initiatives et réalisations, il sera question des travaux en cours sur les abbayes cisterciennes de Vauluisant (Marlène Hélias-Baron) et de La Bussière (Mickaël Lauquin et Nicolas Perreaux), ainsi que de l’abbaye prémontrée de Dilo (Jean-Luc Benoit). L’objectif étant d’amorcer l’établissement d’un questionnaire commun e vue d’une approche comparative des pratiques repérées. Ce sera aussi l'occasion de présenter l’actualité du programme des CBMA et de sa plate-forme documentaire.

Cette journée d'études, qui a été précédée par une première rencontre sur ce même thème le 22 janvier 2010, s'inscrit dans les programmes CPER et ANR « La création d'un mythe médiéval d'Alexandre dans les littératures européennes ». Dans de très nombreux récits autonomes ou intégrés à des histoires universelles naît et se renouvelle une historiographie médiévale européenne sur Alexandre le Grand, qui reste encore peu étudiée. La conciliation d’autorités diverses, la juxtaposition de plusieurs points de vue, avec une exploitation nouvelle des textes historiques de l’Antiquité tardive, avec aussi l’appropriation ou au contraire la mise à distance de données héritées du Pseudo-Callisthène, assurent de constantes modifications dans l’interprétation du personnage, de même qu’évolue l’importance accordée à son souvenir dans la mémoire collective réinventée.

Cette journée propose de faire le point sur les apports des pratiques informatiques aux études médiévales, et les diverses façons de soutenir les projets intégrant une dimension numérique. Une session et une table ronde, organisées autour de la communauté « Digital Medievalist » (www.digitalmedievalist.org), permettront de partager les expériences variées d'un panel de médiévistes d'Europe et d'Amérique du Nord.
