Le séminaire d’histoire de l’Europe du Centre d’histoire de sciences po (CHSP) est pour la deuxième année consécutive dédié à l’étude des musulmans dans les sociétés européennes aux époques moderne et contemporaine. Il s’organise autour du projet ESLAM (European Societies in the Light of Apolitical Muslims) et s’adresse aux chercheurs confirmés, aux jeunes chercheurs et aux étudiants en master en histoire et en sciences sociales.

Le crime de sorcellerie en débat

Définitions, réceptions et réalités (XIVe-XVIe siècle)

La multiplication des travaux ces dernières décennies dans le champ des witchcraft studies a permis de profondément renouveler les approches et les modèles d’étude de la répression de la sorcellerie à la fin du Moyen Âge et au début de l’époque moderne. Par là même, la recherche a grandement précisé les modalités et les configurations (idéologiques, politiques et doctrinales) qui concourent à la genèse de la « chasse aux sorcières ». La recherche a également montré que la répression de la sorcellerie pouvait revêtir des formes très différentes en fonction des contextes et des espaces envisagés, des sources étudiées et des objectifs prêtés à celle-ci, soulignant ainsi l’extrême plasticité de l’accusation de sorcellerie et des catégories de ce crime. Les journées d’étude se proposent ainsi d’orienter les réflexions et les discussions autour de trois axes principaux : la définition du crime de sorcellerie, ses différentes réceptions et la question de sa réalité.

The French Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme offers 10- month fellowships in the four Institutes of Paris, Lyon, Montpellier and Marseille. It welcomes applications from high-level international scholars and scientists primarily in the fields of the social sciences and the humanities (SSH). The call is open to all disciplines in the SSH and all research fields. Research projects from other sciences that propose a transversal dialogue with SSH are also eligible. Some of the four IAS have scientific priorities they will focus on more specifically.

Les normes interrogées par le handicap

Cette neuvième conférence propose d’interroger la construction de la normalité et, plus globalement, le système de pensée qui structure nos sociétés, selon lequel être « valide » serait la norme, au double sens de la situation la plus répandue et la plus souhaitable. Cette perspective critique entend ainsi mettre en évidence la manière dont nos sociétés sont structurellement construites en référence à cette figure de l’individu valide. Si l’injonction récente à construire des sociétés inclusives semble signaler un tournant radical, qu’en est-il concrètement ? En a-t-on réellement fini avec les représentations tendanciellement négatives, défectives, voire tragiques, du handicap ? Les figures « héroïsées » du handicap, devenues omniprésentes dans l’espace public, ne prolongent-elles pas (en les inversant) ces approches du handicap comme écart à la norme ?

Philosophical, legal and sociological perspectives

The results of good science are supposed to be true everywhere and at any time: replicability is traditionally considered a ground of the epistemic authority of modern science. However, in somecases (especially in biomedical, social and psychological studies), important published scientific findings have failed to replicate. What does this say about scientific practices? What are the causes and significance of this “replicability crisis”? And how should scientific communities, scientific institutions, policy makers and the general public react to it? The workshop will explore these multifaceted issues by combining philosophical, sociological and legal perspectives.

Mixed arbitral tribunals, 1919–1930

An experiment in the international adjudication of private rights

The creation of a system of Mixed Arbitral Tribunals (MATs) was a major contribution of the post-WWI peace treaties to the development of international adjudication. Numerically speaking, the 36 MATs were undoubtedly the busiest international courts of the interwar period. Taken together, they decided on more than 70,000 cases, mostly covering private rights. The MATs are similarly remarkable from a procedural point of view. First, their respective rules of procedure were so detailed that contemporaries described them as 'miniature civil procedure codes'. Second, in a departure from most other international courts and tribunals, they also allowed individuals whose rights were at stake to become involved in the proceedings before them.

In the context of a global system of production that is increasingly interconnected and exponentially exercising pressure on the planet and people’s lives, this conference is inspired by the desire to imagine a system of competition law (or beyond competition law) that is fully embedded in the double limit of the planetary boundaries and of social considerations. To achieve this goal, the organizing partners aim to bring together young academics (master’s, PhD, up to four years into tenure track) challenging the status quo with more experienced experts in the areas of competition law and sustainability to rethink competition law and discuss new ways of regulation, interactions between markets, regulators and society and legal enforcement that take into account social and environmental externalities.

Modernity, night shifts and the temporal organization of labour across political and economic regimes

Issues we would like contributors to address in the workshop are: How did the temporal organization of labour and the night shift evolve in different places and different times? How has the night shift been perceived and ‘lived’ by workers who have engaged in this activity? Who are, and were, the workers involved in night work? To what extent has the ‘night shift’ been carried out by specific groups and/or categories (such as unskilled workers, women, migrants, etc). To what extent has the night shift been seen as compatible or clashing with with key social, human and labour rights? How has night work been legitimized, contested, and negotiated by different stakeholders at all levels of the economic hierarchy? And, what are the threats to well-being of night workers due to lack of regulations to night work (in global cities)?

We are happy to announce that the seventh annual Graduate Conference in Political Theory is going to be held in Paris on June 6-8, 2019, entitled Crossroads of Critique: Axel Honneth and the Frankfurt School Project. We welcome contributions from graduate students of political theory across the board and intend to accommodate various approaches (analytical, historical, normative, and critical) as well as contributions from related disciplines (philosophy, social theory, etc.). We also aim at geographic diversity, in that we shall try to foster a substantial academic dialogue between young political theorists from Europe and their peers across the world. Over recent years, the Sciences Po Graduate Conference has established itself as one of Europe’s foremost venues for an international exchange of ideas among graduate students in political theory.
