Le séminaire d’histoire de l’Europe du Centre d’histoire de sciences po (CHSP) est pour la deuxième année consécutive dédié à l’étude des musulmans dans les sociétés européennes aux époques moderne et contemporaine. Il s’organise autour du projet ESLAM (European Societies in the Light of Apolitical Muslims) et s’adresse aux chercheurs confirmés, aux jeunes chercheurs et aux étudiants en master en histoire et en sciences sociales.

Enjeux méthodologiques et théoriques

S’inscrivant dans le cadre de la trente-sixième conférence de la Société internationale pour la sociologie des religions (12 juillet - 15 juillet 2021), ce panel entend explorer et discuter les questions méthodologiques et théoriques relatives à la recherche ethnographique sur les expériences sensorielles et corporelles dans la religion et la spiritualité contemporaine. Il invite les chercheur·euse·s à présenter des contributions incluant la sensorialité comme aspect central de leur recherche, ou comme outil méthodologique (complétant les méthodologies classiques) ; ou comme perspective théorique dans l’approche de paramètres sensoriels et d’(inter-)actions corporelles.

Exploring a democratic ritual: “Young citizens’ ceremonies” in transnational perspective

Throughout the 20th century, and in some instances until today, various European countries, among them Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France, have organized ceremonies to celebrate the accession of young citizens to their political rights (and duties). Called Jungbürgerfeier, Erstwählerfeier, Burgerdag or promotions citoyennes, these rituals have long been forgotten in countries where they ceased to exist, or been overlooked as marginal or simply boring. In fact, however, in the course of their transformations and transnational circulation they have crystallized key tensions within contemporary democracies. We would like to invite scholars working on or interested by these ceremonies in other contexts to join us and help us broaden our transnational perspective.

Narrating violence: Making race, making difference

In collaboration with The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention at the American University of Paris, University of Turku invites scholars, students, practitioners, and activists from all fields to take part in the Winter symposium of the Nordic Summer University Study Circle Narrative and Violence. This symposium will explore questions on the production, practice, and instrumentalization of violent narratives about racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual, and political minorities and groups. While multiple theoretical perspectives will be included in both locations, the symposium will have a broader international focus at the American University of Paris and will facilitate discussions primarily pertaining to the Nordic and Baltic sphere at the University of Turku.

Domestic accumulation, decluttering, and the stuff of kinship in anthropological perspective

We invite submissions of abstracts considering the following sorts of questions: What is the relationship between storage and the labor of kinship? What kinds of possessions are sources of obligation? Which are experienced as social or animate beings? What social practices and spatial processes surround waste, excess, and the riddance of objects from the home? How might local ethnographic concepts like hau orbrol inform the anthropological understanding of attachment to possessions, recycling, or the circulation of second-hand objects? When is accumulation a valued social practice, and when is it morally suspect? How is the space of storage constructed in relationship to the social space of the home, and how might this reflect on the local category of stored things? We invite authors to consider how practices such as storage, stockpiling, and purging of belongings can be approached anthropologically in order to provide both nuanced ethnographic depth and broader cross-cultural and historical perspective. Interdisciplinary perspectives are also welcome.

The EURONEWS Projects and the Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA), in collaboration with University College Cork, present the conference “Exciting news! Event, Narration and Impact from Past to Present”. Papers will discuss the many ramifications of media-induced anxiety and anxiety-induced mediality, engaging the humanities, including history, film studies, literature, folklore, creative writing and adjacent fields intersected by sociology, politology, psychology, anthropology. News Media here include all means of mass communication impinging on daily experience, from books to music, from the social web to films, on multiple platforms and in multiple languages across municipal, state, regional boundaries.

Trans Identities in the French media

Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives

The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

FORMA has gone out with a new call for papers for an introductory issue in what will be a five year project exploring the intersection between the system of production and the cultural system. Ce contrat doctoral international de 36 mois à temps plein à Sorbonne Université (école doctorale IV), dans l'UMR Eur'ORBEM, en partenariat avec le Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales (CEFRES) à Prague, se déroulera à partir du 1er octobre 2020, sous la direction de Clara Royer. La thèse peut être rédigée en français ou en anglais. La thèse sera consacrée aux discours et pratiques relatifs aux orphelins dans la littérature et/ou les arts visuels (cinéma, photographie, arts plastiques, etc.) dans le sillage des violences et des bouleversements démographiques qui ont marqué l'Europe centrale au XX^e siècle. Interdisciplinaire, la thèse est ouverte à des candidats en histoire sociale, en études littéraires et/ou en arts visuels spécialisés dans un ou plusieurs pays de la région.

Violence: An international journal lance un appel à contributions sur le thème « Violence et crise environnementale ». Peut-on parler de violence lorsque l'on évoque le déclin de la biodiversité, la destruction de réserves naturelles telles que l'Amazonie ou la Grande Barrière de corail, ou le déversement illégal de déchets poluants ? Dans quelle mesure la chaîne de la violence est-elle liée à la crise environnementale ? Et quels sont les auteurs et les victimes d'une telle violence ? De quelle manière parler de cette violence et de quelle façon peut-elle être légitimée ou condamnée ? En raison de l’épidémie actuelle de Covid-19, l'événement a été annulé et est en attente d'un report à une date ultérieure.

Ce colloque sera le moment de réfléchir à l’entrelacs entre différentes strates problématiques de la « numérisation du monde », sans négliger un élément central : toutes ces intelligences ont toujours besoin d’exister d’une manière ancrée, ce qui nous conduit à mettre en évidence le concept de territoire. Celui-ci ne sera pas entendu au sens simplement physique, mais aussi écologique, administratif, politique, éthique et existentiel, de l’ordre du milieu ou du transindividuel. L'évènement sera l'occasion d’explorer ces nouveaux territoires et leurs intelligences (à l’aide des outils de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme et du design) pour aller au-delà des smart territories, au sens plat et « bête » de déploiement massif de toutes sortes de devices numériques.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages

The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Crisis and infrastructures: responses to change between materiality and immateriality

A dialogue between Anthropology, Geography and History

The purpose of the conference is to explore the interactions between crised and infrastructures starting from a pivotal question: is it possibile to consider transitional processes as moments of "a transformazion that includes some essential elements of the previous phase?" (Pombeni 2013: 12) Or are they to be intended just as a dramatic interruptions and breaks? PhD Students, Post-Docs and Research Fellows of historical, geographical and anthropological training are invited to partecipate in the construction of a moment of dialogue and excange. The aim is to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion that will encompass all historiographical epochs, from antiquity to the present day, and question not only the role of infrastructure in the resolution of crises, but also the various implications of critical moments and of their conception.

The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. It aims to develop a durable and multidisciplinary research community on the subject, involving both senior and promising young scholars. On 6 and 7 July 2020 CCSCE, in cooperation with KADOC-KU Leuven, is organising an international conference on Religion, social commitment, and female agency.
