Research in Medieval Studies - An International Meeting Series

The past decade has witnessed a marked increase in medieval studies. Younger scholars have, in general, benefitted from doctoral and post-doctoral funding, besides collective research programmes. This, along with the experience and know-how of established academics in countless departments around the Globe has helped to foster this renewal. Results have been ground-breaking in many topics. The Research in Medieval Studies (RiMS) is conceived of as an ongoing series of yearly meetings whose aim is to bring scholars of different academic and geographical backgrounds together to open, or otherwise continue and direct, historiographical debate on key issues in medieval studies, while helping to establish outstanding research that is both innovative and comparative.

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

Epidemics, History and the Environment: Crossing Academic Boundaries

European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference (2019)

This panel - epidemics, climate and history – for the European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference in Tallinn (2019) aims to explore specific climatic/environmental and institutional factors that shaped both the way in which plagues lato sensu and other epidemics, including cholera, yellow fever, typhus, typhoid fever, leprosy, syphilis, etc., originated and spread as well as the consecutive significant demographic and socio-economic consequences at a local or regional scale throughout history (without geographical limitation). A particular attention will be given to original interdisciplinary approaches linking natural proxy archives and written documentary sources.

Four-year PhD position in History (University of Berne)

The Historical Institute of the University of Bern invites applications for a four-year PhD position in History. The position is scheduled to start on November 1, 2018. The PhD student will be a member of the Project "Atlantic Italies: Economic and Cultural Entanglements (15^th-19^th Centuries)”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2018-2022) and directed by Dr. Roberto Zaugg. The prospective PhD student is expected to have good knowledge of Italian, Latin and English and at least basic knowledge of German, as well as practical experience in working with early modern manuscript sources.

This panel aims to study settlement patterns of migrants, according to a gendered approach. It aims to bring together scholars working on migration and settlement dynamics, by focusing on the extension and quality of relationships that newcomers could develop in the new environment and by highlighting differences between men and women. In addition it aims to investigate how these ties influenced, successfully or not, their settlement process: the daily life, the research of a job or a house, the access to credit networks, to poor relief or to other urban resources etc...

Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine ». À l'occasion de cet événement, un panel de chercheurs internationaux débattra de la diversité des expériences de violences populaires survenues au sein de plusieurs pays européens au cours du XIXe siècle. Les communications aborderont différents prismes historiques : social, politique, genre, religieux, culturel, pénal et économique.

Autour de Yoshiki Morimoto : les structures agricoles en dehors du monde carolingien. Formes et genèse

La rencontre se tiendra pour honorer le prof.Yoshiki Morimoto et coïncide elle-même avec le 45e anniversaire de la présentation par Adriaan Verhulst, prof. à l’Université de Gand, d’une communication fondatrice aux Semaines de Spolète. Dans celle-ci, A. Verhulst avait formalisé le cadre conceptuel qui allait présider à l’étude du « modèle domanial classique » carolingien. La présente rencontre ne cherche pas à revoir les acquis de la recherche relative au grand domaine carolingien ; elle vise plutôt à les confronter avec d’autres formes domaniales, avec d’autres modes d’organisation du patrimoine foncier et avec d’autres modes de prélèvement. Convaincus des vertus du comparatisme, les organisateurs de cette rencontre proposent de confronter les modalités de prélèvement du travail paysan et/ou de la mise en culture de la terre dans les zones proches de l’empire carolingien, mais moins directement soumises à son influence.

Transferts de technologies. Étude du cas suisse, XVIIIe-XXe siècle

Appel à contributions et colloque

Alors que le problème des transferts de technologies et de la circulation internationale des innovations a fait l'objet de plusieurs synthèses et débats sur le plan international, l'historiographie suisse n’a pas encore abordé ces questions de manière systématique. Ce désintérêt est d’autant plus étonnant que le transfert technologique, bien plus que l’innovation, est à la base du développement économique de ce pays. En tant qu’économie « suiveuse », la Suisse a, en effet, emprunté quantité de cheminements afin de s’approprier certaines technologies mises au point dans d’autres pays européens et, dès le 19e siècle, de nombreux producteurs suisses sont parvenus à s’inscrire dans un processus d’innovation pour devenir à leur tour des exportateurs de technologies, notamment par l’intermédiaire des multinationales. Ce colloque, qui souhaiterait réunir des chercheurs suisses et étrangers, se propose de fournir une première contribution à cette dimension encore peu étudiée dudit "miracle helvétique". Un choix de papier sera publié dans la revue d'histoire Traverse, publiée par Chronos, à Zurich.
