Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760

Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

Women and Violence in the Late Medieval Mediterranean, ca. 1100-1500

A two-days international conference

The last decades have witnessed an increased interest in research on the relationship between women and violence in the Middle Ages, with new works both on female criminality and on women as victims of violence. The contributions of gender theory and feminist criminology have renewed the approached used in this type of research. Nevertheless, many facets of the complex relationship between women and violence in medieval times still await to be explored in depth. This conference aims to understand how far the roots of modern assumptions concerning women and violence may be found in the late medieval Mediterranean, a context of intense cultural elaboration and exchange which many scholars have indicated as the cradle of modern judicial culture. While dialogue across the Mediterranean was constant in the late Middle Ages, occasions for comparative discussion remain rare for modern-day scholars, to the detriment of a deeper understanding of the complexity of many issues. Thus, we encourage specialists of different areas across the Mediterranean (Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world) to contribute to the discussion. What were the main differences and similarities? How did these change through time? What were the causes for change? Were coexisting assumptions linking femininity and violence conflicting or collaborating?

Contextualizing bankruptcy

Publicity, space and time (Europe, 17th to 19th century)

Although bankruptcy was a rather exceptional situation in the life of a merchant, it has explanatory power for routines of economic stakeholders, for their space of experience and their horizon of expectation. We can therefore use the irregularity of failure as an indicator of regularities. Considering the long, non-uniform and unsteady transition from merchant capitalism to industrial and financial capitalism, we suggest to start a dialogue between modernistes and contemporanéistes. The workshop focuses on the various forms of contextualizing business failure and puts forward three major research axes: Covering and Uncovering: Secrecy and Publicity; Economic Space and Area of Jurisdiction; Temporal Narratives of (In)Solvency.

Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries

Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles

This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

The Democratic State in Trans-Atlantic Context

Scholarship on the state has been oddly parochial, focused on the domestic and national scales to the exclusion of the international and transnational. This habit of presuming the nation-state as a bounded container is particularly entrenched in work on the state, understood in Weberian terms that are conceptually insulated from democratic practices. Democracy, in turn, is often taken as an already defined category of regime rather than a quality of political action as it plays out in state-building. By taking both democracy and the nation-state for granted, scholars leave unspecified what should be empirically explained. Even comparative analyses of welfare states, which should be more cosmopolitan, tend to reify national differences by naturalizing the comparative framework rather than by historicizing the mutual constitution of systems of social provision. During this conference, we hope to advance a transnational conversation with scholars from the U.S. and Europe to interrogate the development of the democratic state in trans-Atlantic context.

Quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction

Après Madrid (2003), Cambridge (2006), Cottbus (2009), Paris a été choisie pour accueillir le quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction. Trois écoles d'architecture (Paris-Malaquais, Paris-La Villette et Versailles) ainsi que le Conservatoire des arts et métiers pilotent cet évènement. L'histoire de la construction apparaît par définition hybride, associant aussi bien la conception que la réalisation, comme la préservation, la technique que la culture, et se trouve de fait interdisciplinaire. Y participent aussi bien des historiens de toutes disciplines (archéologues, juristes, économistes, historiens de l'art, etc.) que des praticiens (ingénieurs, architectes, entrepreneurs, artisans). Plus de 350 chercheurs, enseignants et praticiens, vont présenter le dernier état de leur recherche dans ce champ et en débattre sur quatre sites parisiens et versaillais. 6 conférences plénières seront délivrées par des personnalités reconnues par leurs pairs. This conference represents the final stage of the “European Doctorate in history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy of legal cultures in Europe”, a multilingual PhD programme financed by the European Commission and conceived to deepen the links between law and social sciences. The topic of the meeting, “Undoing law, framing contexts. Normativity across the disciplines”, aims to encourage a reflection on the concepts of law and context, bringing together scholars with different academic backgrounds but with a common interest in law.Many feel that a line has to be drawn between what is law and what it is not, between the text of law and its con-text. It is precisely this activity of distinguishing between the legal and the non-legal that we would like to examine more closely.

Les présentations explorent le droit colonial vis-à-vis du waqf en tant qu'institution mais aussi les propriétés leur appartenant dans le monde musulman avant l'indépendence des pays colonisés. Dans l'objectif d'étudier le droit qui s'y adaptait ou qui s'adaptait par rapport au waqf, les contributions se concentrent sur des mécanismes légaux innovateurs ou des discussions qui ont eu lieu dans les pays concernés à l'égard du statu quo de waqf au moment des interventions coloniales à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle.
