    Exciting news! Event, Narration and Impact from Past to Present

    The EURONEWS Projects and the Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA), in collaboration with University College Cork, present the conference “Exciting news! Event, Narration and Impact from Past to Present”. Papers will discuss the many ramifications of media-induced anxiety and anxiety-induced mediality, engaging the humanities, including history, film studies, literature, folklore, creative writing and adjacent fields intersected by sociology, politology, psychology, anthropology. News Media here include all means of mass communication impinging on daily experience, from books to music, from the social web to films, on multiple platforms and in multiple languages across municipal, state, regional boundaries.

    Using the Past: The Middle Ages in the Spotlight

    The conference aims at bringing together scholars from all around the world concerned with the uses of the medieval past. Participants will address when, where, how, why and by whom the medieval past has been used, with papers embracing a broad chronological timeline that begins in the medieval period itself and extends to include contemporary politics, society and mass media. Thus, this conference seeks to provide a forum for scholars who are willing to examine and to advance knowledge on the use of the medieval past, contributing to a better assessment of contemporary realities, problems and challenges.

    The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages

    The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

    Crisis and infrastructures: responses to change between materiality and immateriality

    A dialogue between Anthropology, Geography and History

    The purpose of the conference is to explore the interactions between crised and infrastructures starting from a pivotal question: is it possibile to consider transitional processes as moments of "a transformazion that includes some essential elements of the previous phase?" (Pombeni 2013: 12) Or are they to be intended just as a dramatic interruptions and breaks? PhD Students, Post-Docs and Research Fellows of historical, geographical and anthropological training are invited to partecipate in the construction of a moment of dialogue and excange. The aim is to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion that will encompass all historiographical epochs, from antiquity to the present day, and question not only the role of infrastructure in the resolution of crises, but also the various implications of critical moments and of their conception.

It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, ethnology, sociology, geography, methodology, among other areas.

    Dans le cadre du projet « À partir d'Ovide », l'association culturelle Rodopis organise un colloque titré Metamorfosi: identità in smottamento (Metamorphosis: the Landslide of Identity), qui aura lieu à Urbino (Italie) le 30 novembre et 1 décembre 2017. Le colloque se propose d'analyser dans une perspective multidiscliplinaire (la participation de sociologues, anthropologues, historiens, philosophes, experts de littératures anciennes et modernes est souhaitée) les problèmes posés par les notions d'indentité, alterité, transformation, soit à partir de l'examen de cas d'études, soit à partir d'une perspective epistémologique.

    Le commerce du luxe – le luxe du commerce

    Production, exposition et circulation des objets précieux du Moyen Âge à nos jours

    Comment se produisent, s’exposent, se diffusent et se consomment les produits du luxe ? Le but du colloque est de revenir sur la question de la spécialisation progressive d’un commerce voué aux objets précieux. Il entend être une manifestation ouverte d’un point de vue chronologique, spatial et disciplinaire, faisant appel à des spécialistes d’horizons différents : histoire, histoire de l’art, économie, littérature, sociologie, etc. Il s’agira de montrer la richesse et la diversité de ce qui était (et reste) compris sous l’appellation de ‘luxe’ et d’observer comment se sont progressivement mis en place des marchés spécialisés. Deux approches spécifiques sont menées, d’une part les acteurs et les marchandises, d’autre part les lieux de vente et la puissance matérielle et symbolique attachée à ce secteur particulier de l’économie. Le colloque aura lieu les jeudi 22 et vendredi 23 novembre 2012 à Lyon (Musée Gadagne). La date-limite pour la soumission des propositions est le 31 décembre 2011.

    Le colloque sur l'histoire des cuissons a pour objectif de susciter une analyse des problématiques centrées sur l'évolution des différentes techniques employées (énergies, appareils, ustensiles), sur les formes d'apprentissage du savoir-faire (pratiques, transmission, innovations) et sur les conséquences alimentaires (transformation des produits, évolution des saveurs, préconisations) dans les façons de faire cuire les aliments. Il s'inscrit volontairement dans une perspective comparative et n'exclut donc aucun espace ni aucune période.

    European Social Science History Conference 2010

    This is a call for papers for the Network Religion of the next European Social Science History Conference, which will take place at the beautiful Bijloke Site in Ghent, Belgium, from 13 to 16 April 2010. The aim of the ESSHC is bringing together scholars interested in explaining historical phenomena using the methods of the social sciences. The conference is characterized by a lively exchange in many small groups, rather than by formal plenary sessions. The conference welcomes papers and sessions on any historical topic and any historical period. It is organized in 28 networks, which cover a certain topic, on of these being Religion.
