Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity

The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Using the Past: The Middle Ages in the Spotlight

The conference aims at bringing together scholars from all around the world concerned with the uses of the medieval past. The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century

This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).

Violence and film

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the depiction of violence in film and television. Violence, real or threatened, drives the plots of many, if not most, of the narratives we watch on the screen. Detectives solve grisly murders, victims seek revenge, teenagers flee slashers, gangsters spray bullets, Kungfu fighters trade punches, and armies clash on the battlefield (or in outer space). While almost everyone claims to wants to reduce the levels of violence in society, movie audiences regularly get an enormous kick out of watching on the screen what we abhor in real life. But not all cinematic violence is meant to titillate. Often the aim is to bring audiences closer to the sickening reality of the mistreatment and abuse suffered by those whose plights might otherwise remain invisible to us. While many worry that exposure to cinematic violence may desensitize us, perhaps it can also serve to awaken our empathy.

Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula

This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).

African Ivories

In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900

Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

FORMA privileges the dialogue between disciplines and critical traditions. The subject matter of the articles is open. All the texts, as specified in the System of Arbitration section, have to comply with the guidelines established by the entities in charge of indexing scientific journals, with regard to the plurality of the editorial and scientific committees as well as the selection process and revision of published texts. Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities, special musicological issue

For the upcoming issue of the peer-reviewed journal Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities (August 2017) we are looking for studies focused on various aspects related to the phenomena of “music” and “popularity”. We invite articles anchored in classical music as well as popular music. Papers which directly or indirectly problematize the traditional polarisation of the aforementioned musical spheres are especially welcome. The issue provides space for specific historical investigations and case studies, but also for wider theoretical considerations which would reflect the construction of the phenomena of the so-called classical and popular music from social, political / ideological, economic, philosophical and other perspectives. In this respect, approaches of ethnomusicology and cultural geography, which would touch on the topic with regard to the specifics of particular localities, regions, nations and ethnic groups, are most desirable.
