The object. A research path in Humanities and Social Sciences
Call for Articles. Forma's 16th issue
How can an object and its materiality be defined? Which are the relationships and/or bonds that link individuals to objects? Which are meanings and values that should be considered in an object that is stripped from its context? How can it be described, replaced and represented in its natural environment (if it exists)? Are there limits to said representations? For the next issue, Forma. Revista d'Estudis Comparatius joins the project put forward by the collective “Jeune chercheurs de TELEMMe” for the preparation of their annual study conferences about the "object" in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. -

Legal repression of protests, revolts and resistance in Central Africa
VIth European Conference on African Studies (2015)
Having long remained in the shadows, the issues of legal history and colonial justice are now experiencing a revival. For about a decade, researchers of different imperial spaces have placed this issue on their agenda. The panel we propose aims to deepen and explore the role of justice in the policies of Central Africa. More specifically, we wish to highlight the intervention of colonial courts in dealing with disputes, revolts and resistance (open or silent) of the African population. The analysis of the repression of resistance leads to consider the implications of colonial policy on local populations and that of the dynamics of power between the administration, the magistrates and the natives.

Waqf: Modern State Control and Nationalization
Second Law of Waqf Conference
Following the first of three conferences on "The Law of Waqf" organised by Harvard Islamic Legal Studies Program which concentrated on the legal origins of waqf to Ottoman-era maturity (convened in May 2006), we are now solliciting abstracts for the second conference which will focus on colonial era law in relation to waqf (mid 19th century to the end of the colonial period). Both indigeneous and colonial law relating to the legal system of waqf are of interest to this conference which will occur in Cambridge, Mass., on 16-18 May 2008. All abstracts and papers are to be in English.
