Body, culture and identity in Lavapies, Madrid

From the individual to the collective

The objective of this Seminar is to stress the importance of a collaborative and participative way to understand through our senses. We want to explore connections between thinking and action in everyday city experiences, developing “in situ” actions. We consider that the knowledge of the space need space experiences. We aim to develop a collective, community exploration of the vital flow of the Lavapiés area in Madrid altering the classical relationship between artist, landscape and inhabitants. This exploration will allow the construction of an intangible map of audiovisual fragments, photo, phonographs, video art, performative actions. The direct experimentation of space helps us understand it, as well as "to perform it"; it helps us understand the aesthetic and emotional relationships we have with it. In order to get our objectives, urban artists, soundscape experts, theater groups, architects, philosopher, civil and social associations, citizens…will be invited.

Os próximos dias 8, 9 e 10 de abril ir-se-á na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela a conferência internacional "A era do espaço. Estado e novas perspectivas", onde se reunirão pesquisadores de todo o mundo para debaterem sobre o spatial turn das humanidades na segunda metade do século passado. Este evento interdisciplinar reunirá geógrafos, filólogos, historiadores, filósofos e outras disciplinas relacionadas para rever o estado atual das spatial humanities, partilhar diferentes abordagens e métodos de pesquisa e debater sobre o seu futuro.

Leonardo and Antiquity

Conference at Hadrian's Villa

To mark the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the “Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este - Villae” (Tivoli, Rome) is organizing a conference with the theme of: “Leonardo and Antiquity”, at Hadrian’s Villa. At the dawn of the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci visited Villa Adriana, then known as “old Tivoli”. The conference in preparation intends to explore ways in which this journey influenced Leonardo's genius, also in the context of the time period and work of Leonardo's contemporaries and/or disciples. In the company of internationally recognized keynote speakers, the conference welcomes the participation of both Italian and foreign researchers and scholars who answer this call for papers, as a major focus of the conference will be to place Leonardo's trip to Tivoli within a broader cultural context. The deadline for the paper proposals is fixed at January 25th, 2019.

Nature and culture-based strategies and solutions for cities and territories : an idea whose time has come !

The event is not strictly European. It is aiming at bringing together scientists and cities and territories from all over the world that plan or implement innovative nature and culture-based solutions, thus creating a world-wide forum of exchange of their success stories. However the Mediterranean region with its rich natural and cultural diversity, both terrestrial and marine will be very present ! The event will host the MED Social and creative community featured by TALIA (Territorial Appropriation of Leading-edge Innovation Actions), the Interreg-MED Programme’s horizontal project promoting the coherence and impact of modular projects addressing the topics of Cultural and Creative Industries and Social Innovation.

Marfins Africanos

No Mundo Atlântico, 1400-1900

Desde Abril de 2015, a equipa internacional do projecto “Marfins Africanos no Mundo Atlântico: uma reavaliação dos marfins luso-africanos” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), constituída por 27 investigadores das Universidades de Lisboa e Évora, e da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, no Brasil, tem desenvolvido uma investigação sobre o comércio, circulação e produção de marfim africano, em bruto e esculpido, no espaço atlântico entre os séculos XV e XVIII. Foi feita uma identificação e inventariação de objectos nas colecções portuguesas e brasileiras, em Minas Gerais, bem como uma recolha de referências e descrições nas fontes escritas portuguesas. Pela primeira vez uma selecção de marfins foi alvo de análises laboratoriais com vista a contribuir para dilucidar cronologias e proveniências. A equipa de investigação do projecto tem construído propostas de reinterpretação da cultura material a partir dos contextos africanos da sua produção.

Modernism, modernisation and the rural landscape

MODSCAPES_conference2018

The impact of the Modern Movement and modernisation processes on rural landscapes in Europe and beyond is a widespread but little known, recognised or understood phenomenon which still exerts effects today. Within the third joint research programme of HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) dedicated to “The uses of the past” which started in 2016, this subject is now being studied through several lenses within the MODSCAPES project. MODSCAPES welcomes proposals (full sessions, papers, trainnig/workshop) to its mid-event event, an international conference dedicated to Modernism, modernisation and the rural landscape.

The congress aims to bring together researchers and scientists from different backgrounds intersecting with the social sciences revealing the visible and invisible networks. Espaces et paysages industriels : Zola et les réalités sociales de son époque

Le colloque sera international et interdisciplinaire. Le sujet est à interpréter de manière large, afin d’inclure des écrivains et artistes contemporains de Zola, des analyses génétiques, politico-historiques et sociologiques aussi bien que des études de l’œuvre de Zola. Les invités d’honneur seront Professeur Henri Mitterand, Madame Martine Le Blond Zola et Madame Monique Sicard. New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes

Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.

The objective of the conference is to analyze the effect of tourism, questioning more specifically in this second edition its potential for becoming a vector of sustainable development, understood in its more general sense. Within this framework, we will question its economic impact, as well as its social effects, on Indonesia and Southern countries. They provided a testing ground for the ideas and tools of environmental and social scientists, architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects and artists, which converged around a shared challenge.

6th STS (Science and Technology Studies) Italia Conference

In this session of the 6^th STS Italia Conference on Sociotechnical Environments, we will consider how contemporary art addresses new questions to environmental issues; how it questions our relation with nature and technique; and how artistic creation may indicate new kinds of answers to contemporary ecological issues. This call is open to various disciplinary fields: contribution proposals could aim to describe kinds of knowledge that contemporary art contribute to produce in the field of ecology, as to trace a history of the dialogue between environmental issues and artistic creations, and, more generally, on case studies questioning the notions of art, technique and environmental issues.

Perception sonore des lieux de culte (dans différentes religions) par une approche multidisciplinaire anthropologique et acoustique

The aim of this workshop is to explore, with a trans-disciplinary perspective, the various sonic issues project managers encounter when building or rehabilitating worship spaces in different cultural contexts. Building or rehabilitating such spaces should not only answer to requirements dictated by the building but should also take into account the practices, perceptions and expectations of the various actors and users of those spaces (religious officiants and practitioners, etc.).
