Following the successful conference held in October 2017 in London and funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership, the organisers would like to extend a formative call for publications in preparation to propose a special issue on cross-disciplinarity and forms of knowledge in the early modern world (1450–1800).

Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence / PJCV
Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

6th Colloquium on Crime and Criminal Justice in Early Modern and Modern Times
The colloquium provides an open forum for discussion, debate and the presentation of PhD-, postdocand other research projects related to the history of crime and justice in the early modern and modernperiod. It aims for an interdisciplinary exchange between scholars of a wide range of subjects suchas history, legal history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, humanities, political science and others. Core issues that will be addressed are various forms of crime and delinquency, law and normativity, criminal prosecution and justice, punishment and social control as well as sources and methodicalapproaches. We also invite contributions of scholars who would like to enter into a dialogue with researchers from the field of crime and criminal justice even though the mentioned topics would onlyconstitute a part of the respective projects. The colloquium focuses on elites in a political, economic, social or cultural context, their role inthe administration of justice and the legal system as well as specific forms of deviance and delinquency of such groups.

Cartographies de l'Europe du Sud-Est
The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

Comparing Militaries in the Long 19th Century
The history of military development in modern times is one of mutual observation and comparison. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, political and military leaders continuously evaluated the power of their friends and foes. Members of the military, politicians and activists looked to foreign forces for models to avoid or emulate, using comparisons to justify their own military and defense policies. The workshop Comparing Militaries in the Long 19th Century explores the means and methods by which experts and decision-makers observed and compared foreign armies and navies from the era of the Napoleonic Wars to the inter-war period.

This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries
Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles
This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

In continuation of the society’s inaugural conference on Modernist communities, we now propose to explore the debate over emotions in the Modernist era. We hope to foster reflection and discussion that will go beyond the paradox of a passionately anti-emotional Modernism towards a reconsideration of the large extent to which Modernism attempts to channel, remotivate, and revalue the power of emotion. -

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?
Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?
Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

La médecine de cour : personnel de santé et politiques sanitaires en Europe, XVe-XVIIIe siècle
Court medical practitioners changed in numbers, occupations and functions during the Renaissance and early modern period (15c-18c) practitioners focused on different specialities within body-care, and took on different roles in the government of Europe’s states. Building on recent work that has concentrated on the history of body care at courts, this workshop will explores changes in court medical politics, practices and practitioners and the consequences they had for, firstly, medical thought, regulation and practice and, secondly, the activities, management and evolution of early modern states. -

Propagandes : objectifs et pratiques au XVIe et au XXe siècles
Pouvons-nous établir des parallèles entre les objectifs de la propagande au seizième siècle et ceux de la communication de masse contemporaine ? Comment les historiens de la première modernité utilisent-ils le terme de propagande ? Quels glissements sémantiques peut-on observer par rapport à son utilisation par les historiens de la société de masse ?Pour répondre à ces questions, cet atelier de recherche propose une approche diachronique, allant de pair avec un changement de perspective : plutôt que sur les contenus, qui sont toujours spécifiques à leur époque, l’attention se portera sur les outils et les pratiques de la propagande dans la longue durée. -

L’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée, XVIIIe-XIXe siècles
Si les opérations navales américaines au cours des deux conflits mondiaux et la présence permanente de la sixième flotte en Méditerranée depuis bientôt un demi-siècle révèlent clairement l’intérêt porté par les États-Unis pour cet espace, cet intérêt s’inscrit dans la durée. Dans un temps long, l’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée peut apparaître au fond comme le dernier épisode de la mainmise des puissances atlantiques sur les commerces méditerranéens esquissée par F. Braudel. Ce colloque réunissant des spécialistes de huit pays se propose d’étudier comment la jeune république américaine appréhende et investit l’espace méditerranéen au lendemain de son indépendance, quelles représentations de l’intérêt et de la géopolitique de cet espace elle se crée, comment les acteurs politiques et économiques américains se sont positionnés dans cette région. -

L’ivresse de la liberté : la révolution de 1908 dans l’Empire ottoman
1908 est le point fort du rapprochement entre la Turquie et l’Europe. Alors que réformisme et révolution, impérialisme et nationalisme, socialisme et libéralisme inspiraient mouvements et débats contradictoires en Europe, les intellectuels jeunes-turcs, inspirés par ces débats, ont mené une révolution qui a ébranlé tout l’Empire, le Moyen-Orient et même au delà. Pour la première fois, ces pays ont fait l’expérience de la liberté. On évoque même alors une « ivresse de la liberté ». Il s’agira ici de voir dans quelle mesure cette soudaine liberté de parole et d’expression et de déplacement a abouti à créer un « espace public ». Nous rendrons également compte des influences européennes sur les intellectuels Jeunes-Turcs et de l’impact de cette révolution, sur cette partie du monde musulman et ailleurs. -

Ce colloque international rassemble des spécialistes français, britanniques, irlandais et américains sur la question des liens unissant la France et les îles Britanniques entre 1640 et 1660. Cette période troublée dans les trois royaumes britanniques vit la mise en place de nouveaux systèmes de gouvernements, parfois avec l'aide de la France, et coïncide avec le début du règne de Louis XIV et le triomphe de l'absolutisme en France. Ce colloque propose d'étudier les échanges, interactions et représentations croisées alors à l'oeuvre.
