Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities
Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes
The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

Teaching Gender. Theory and society in the classroom
Now more than ever, gender as an analytical concept is being heavily contested from diverse quarters inside as well as outside academia. The panel discussion addresses key questions of how to teach gender as critical theory in the light of current societal and political tensions on the one hand and institutional constraints inside the university on the other hand. How can we teach “critique”? What does teaching gender mean in terms of methods and topics? And how can we engage in critical research and teaching while responding to societal expectations as to relevant output and knowledge transfer?

The Department of Gender Studies and Islamic Studies of the University of Zurich is organizing the first workshop of the Gender in University and Society (GENiUS) network on “Concepts that Matter! Terminologies of Women and Gender in Transnational Perspective”. GENiUS is an informal Swiss-Arab Network of academics specialized in the field of Gender Studies in and on the Arab region that aims at fostering scientific exchange on the levels of research, teaching and institution building.

Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

International Summer Academy, 11-19 September 2014 at the Orient-Institut Beirut. This Summer Academy offers early-career scholars an opportunity to follow up on the debates about modernity, its preconditions and its aftermath by focusing on the multifarious processes in which societies outside Europe have adopted, translated, rejected or produced the global, the modern and tradition since the seventeenth century. It places a specific focus on the notions of subjectivity and objectivity as discursive practices which are intrinsically linked to each other.

Accounting Professions in the Arab Region
Beyond Standardization: Professionel Dybnamics and Challenges
Arab countries are confronted, like other countries, to the pressure of standardization, but each one of them is responding from the back ground of its particular history. In such a framework, accounting professions have developed, are regulated, have built professional organizations and training institutions, and are now pressed to adopt international standards. International audit firms tend to impose their methods and model with the expansion of transnational corporation, the multiplication of joint ventures and franchised colmpanies. Beyond cultural gaps, historical evolution and political-economic features, reforms are being designed universally, under the pressure of the World Bank. A better understanding of the accounting profession, of practitioners aims and stakes, can point a way forward. The aim of this project is to discuss these issues in the Arab countries, and to contribute by so doing to a new vision of what is at stake in the recent upheavals they have witnessed.

Graduate and Postgraduate Programs in Education in Arab Universities: Quality and Added Value
This conference is organized by the Arab Educational Information Network Shamaa and the Lebanese Association for Educational Studies and will be held in November 2013 in Beirut, Lebanon. The conference's objective is to provide a platform for educational researchers to present their perspectives on the current state of research studies in graduate programs in education and to raise questions regarding the quality of these studies. Papers presented will be subject to peer review process to be eligible for publication in the refereed conference proceedings. We hope that this conference will help capture the current practices in MA and PHD programs in education in the Arab countries, and will allow for a rich professional dialogue among its participants toward developing ideas and recommendations for improving these programs as well as the quality of their graduates and the studies they produce.

Un an et demi après leur déclenchement, les révolutions arabes présentent un bilan hasardeux : en Tunisie, en Égypte et en Libye, où les anciens dirigeants ont été chassés du pouvoir par le soulèvement populaire, le paysage politique reste incertain. Au Yémen une transition inaccomplie s'est mise en place, au Bahrein le soulèvement a été étouffé, et la Syrie s'enfonce dans une guerre civile où l'opposition démocratique est prise entre la sanglante répression du pouvoir et la montée en puissance des éléments jihadistes. -

La périodisation proposée s’étend de 1967 à 1989 et prend en compte les seules relations politiques, diplomatiques et économiques entre l’Est de l’Europe et la Méditerranée, que ce soit de manière bilatérale ou multilatérale. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. Dans le champ qui nous occupe, le cadre de travail offert aux chercheurs reste souvent très peu performant, comme le montrent les choix qui s’ouvrent aux doctorants. Seuls quelques rares enseignements tiennent compte d’un phénomène qui caractérise pourtant les sociétés musulmanes depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, que ce soit en Europe ou en Amérique du Nord, tout autant que dans les pays concernés qui, encore aujourd’hui n’offrent à leurs jeunes candidats artistes et historiens de l'art qu’un apprentissage tourné vers l’histoire de l’art des pays occidentaux.
