Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities

Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes

La diversité architecturale et urbanistique caractérisant les villes méditerranéennes est indissociable de leur identité. Il semble évident que cette diversité et cette multiplicité d'indentités sont à considérer comme une des plus grandes valeurs culturelles et humaines. La cohabitation des formes dans le temps et dans l'espace, les mélanges entre les cultures urbaines et architecturales, les influences et les contaminations voire même les contrastes et les contradictions identitaires qui se révèlent sur le territoire urbain méditerranéen traduisent traduisent la stratification de la ville dans ses implications pragmatiques et ses significations identitaires. Aujourd'hui, dans un contexet de mise en concurrence et d'attractivité des territoires, plusieurs villes méditerranéennes connaissent de profondes mutations. Face à ces transformations, la référence à des "territoires identitaires" (Troin, 2004) et la capacité de la ville à se construire une identité et à la diffuser sont remises en question.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe

Since the start of the 21^stcentury seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

The Middle East and Europe: cross-cultural, diplomatic and economic exchanges in the early modern period (1500-1820)

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

Talking about “Arabs”. Echoes from different Europes

The immigration emergency, the Cologne attacks and other reports on the Arab populations in Europe generate commentaries across the continent. The concentration of unwelcoming attitudes towards Middle Eastern newcomers in Central and Eastern Europe is seen by some as the evidence of “a split of mentalities” between the “old Europe” and its ex-communist states. There is a need, however, to complexify these dichotomies by looking into how concretely knowledge on the Middle East is produced in different European countries. The Oriental Institute in Prague is organizing a workshop on this issue, seeking to investigate the nexus between three different fields of knowledge production and diffusion in today’s Europe: media, academic and policy-making.

Les relations Europe-Arabie (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

Ce colloque international s’intéressera aux liens entre l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l’époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l’âge industriel jusqu’aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l’étude du contenu et de l’évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique. Pour étudier à la fois le contenu des échanges et leur évolution, deux axes seront privilégiés : les relations culturelles et scientifiques en lien avec l’évolution des regards mutuels du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle ; l’évolution des relations économiques du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle.

Politiques énergétiques métropolitaines : le cas des villes turques

Call for paper for a Seminar at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), co-organized by Eric Verdeil (Jean Moulin University in Lyon - UMR Environment City Corporation) and Jean-François Pérouse (Galatasaray University and IFEA). The report Energy and Urban Innovation (2010) by the World Energy Council underlines the fundamental role of cities in the energy transition and the interlocking of several series of actions, related to technology, economy and policy. It appears that the political and social practices are a major issue and justify an increased contribution of social sciences to the analysis of the implementation of these new policies. The seminar intends to address these issues in the case of large Turkish cities.

We intend in this workshop to reconsider how new technologies flow and circulate around the globe. One cannot ignore the obvious fact that we are seeing the emergence of new technological and industrial centres which accompany the rapid redistribution of economic power around the world; but one should also take into account the fact that technology is – and has always been – flowing and circulating in much more unexpected ways than predicted by the old-fashioned diffusionist models which are still prevalent, even in these times of globalisation. By privileging in this workshop (and in our collective project) a comparative approach between three very different geographical regions – South Asia, the Middle East and Europe – we hope to be able to propose an approach to technological flow, which will be sufficiently global and comparative, for going beyond the specificities of any particular culture or society, and which may really better help us understand the dynamics of technological circulations and the processes by which technologies are reinvented in different locations.

Relations et regards croisés, 1967-1989

Appel à contribution pour un colloque international co-organisé par l’association Richie, l’UMR IRICE, l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et l’Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. L'objectif de ce colloque est d'enrichir l'historiographie des relations entre l'Europe de l'Est et les pays riverains de la Méditerranée. La périodisation proposée s’étend de 1967 à 1989 et prend en compte les seules relations politiques, diplomatiques et économiques entre l’Est de l’Europe et la Méditerranée, que ce soit de manière bilatérale ou multilatérale.

Les murs en relations internationales - Fences and Walls in International Relations

Depuis la Grande muraille de Chine, le mur d’Antonin ou celui d’Hadrien réalisé par les Romains, le Genkobori construit par les Japonais sur l’île de Kyushu, ou encore le Mur de Berlin durant la période contemporaine, le « mur » est une des clés constantes – en Orient comme en Occident - de la protection d’une entité constituée et souveraine. Plus récemment, avec la construction des murs en Palestine, à Chypre, autour de Ceuta et Melilla, au Sahara occidental, à la frontière mexicano-américaine, au Cachemire, à la frontière du Botswana, ces fortifications demeurent un symbole de sécurité dans les relations internationales. Pour séparer ou pour protéger, la version contemporaine du mur pourrait correspondre à la (re)polarisation du monde à la suite des attentats du 11 septembre et constitue le révélateur d’une nouvelle ère des relations internationales, fondée sur la « perception » de l’ennemi.

L’ivresse de la liberté : la révolution de 1908 dans l’Empire ottoman

1908 est le point fort du rapprochement entre la Turquie et l’Europe. Alors que réformisme et révolution, impérialisme et nationalisme, socialisme et libéralisme inspiraient mouvements et débats contradictoires en Europe, les intellectuels jeunes-turcs, inspirés par ces débats, ont mené une révolution qui a ébranlé tout l’Empire, le Moyen-Orient et même au delà. Pour la première fois, ces pays ont fait l’expérience de la liberté. On évoque même alors une « ivresse de la liberté ». Il s’agira ici de voir dans quelle mesure cette soudaine liberté de parole et d’expression et de déplacement a abouti à créer un « espace public ». Nous rendrons également compte des influences européennes sur les intellectuels Jeunes-Turcs et de l’impact de cette révolution, sur cette partie du monde musulman et ailleurs.
