The 24th edition of European Committee for Sport History (CESH) will be held from the 9th to 11th of September 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal. The theme of this year’s congress, “Sport and Politics from Antiquity to the Modern Day”, aims to explore the historical configurations of the sports field and its relationship with a broad range of political processes.

Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century

This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).

European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968

The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.” We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

6th Colloquium on Crime and Criminal Justice in Early Modern and Modern Times

The colloquium provides an open forum for discussion, debate and the presentation of PhD-, postdocand other research projects related to the history of crime and justice in the early modern and modernperiod. It aims for an interdisciplinary exchange between scholars of a wide range of subjects suchas history, legal history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, humanities, political science and others. Core issues that will be addressed are various forms of crime and delinquency, law and normativity, criminal prosecution and justice, punishment and social control as well as sources and methodicalapproaches. We also invite contributions of scholars who would like to enter into a dialogue with researchers from the field of crime and criminal justice even though the mentioned topics would onlyconstitute a part of the respective projects. The colloquium focuses on elites in a political, economic, social or cultural context, their role inthe administration of justice and the legal system as well as specific forms of deviance and delinquency of such groups.

This study day aims to interrogate the experimental and novel socialities, imagined communities and social and institutional conditions summoned into being by 'democratic' forms of music-making: What is the nature of a 'democratic ideal' in music (or art-making more widely)? What is achieved, politically, by rethinking the way in which music is made? When does such rethinking affect the wider domain of social relations, and when does it not? If democratic music-making can help with the wider democratisation of social life, how does it do so? When and how is ‘democratic' music more than just a metaphor?

Pluralizing perspectives? Truth and Reconciliation in societies emerging from conflict and/or violence

This is a one-day workshop on the plurality of reconciliation practices in post-conflitc societies. What various meanings are assigned to the word ‘reconciliation’ in the different communities where such initiatives have been implemented? How may conflicting interests or views be reconciled? The organisers also wish to study the influence of historical factors, and assess how the accounts of those seeking reconciliation have evolved over time. An analysis of past initiatives will also be relevant. Finally, a distinction between nationally and locally devised initiatives may be made to better assess the policies implemented, their sustainability, and their impact on the local communities. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop and submissions by researchers in Humanities or Political and Social Sciences will be welcome.

Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago

The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XX^th Century until the contemporary moment.

The issue of corruption has, of late, become of growing interest to social scientists and historians although research in corruption in urban settings less so and the relationship of corruption to urban governance even less. The complexity of governance as distinct from government has raised questions, particularly since the 1980s, as state governments have sought relationships with private and voluntary actors to manage and deliver services and other public goods.

First international seminar for post-graduate students in Sport History

A first international seminar for PHD and post-graduate students in sport history (political and cultural perspectives) supervised by Prof. Dave Day (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Prof. J.-F. Loudcher (Bordeaux) is planned at Bordeaux between the 11^th September and the 13^th September 2017. It is the first of a series of seminars between the two universities (the next will be in Manchester) and will provides an opportunity to establish new relationsships and partnerships with students ands researchers from all over the world. In addition, this one will have a workshop on European project research funding on cultural and political sport coaching in a comparative way for an application in 2018. It is possible to just attend the seminar and the workshop.

Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19^th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Fung Global Fellows Program “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance”

Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests?

The last thirty years have seen the burgeoning of political and academic speeches on the merits of participative or deliberative democracy. In parallel, in occidental democracies, various systems sharing the ambition to strengthen or increase citizen participation through collective discussion on public issues are being institutionalized. These devices are often viewed today as a novel cure to the present crisis of representative governance. This panel, at the crossroads of sociology, history and political science, aims at historicizing such deliberation necessity and at redrawing the genesis of the phenomenon as speech and political practice.

Les révolutions arabes à la croisée des chemins

Conférence internationale du 24 au 27 juin 2012, coorganisée par le CEDEJ, Sciences Po Paris, et Kuwait Program. Un an et demi après leur déclenchement, les révolutions arabes présentent un bilan hasardeux : en Tunisie, en Égypte et en Libye, où les anciens dirigeants ont été chassés du pouvoir par le soulèvement populaire, le paysage politique reste incertain. Au Yémen une transition inaccomplie s'est mise en place, au Bahrein le soulèvement a été étouffé, et la Syrie s'enfonce dans une guerre civile où l'opposition démocratique est prise entre la sanglante répression du pouvoir et la montée en puissance des éléments jihadistes.

In 2012 the NIOD will conclude the research program Legacies of collaboration: the integration and exclusion of National-Socialist milieus in Dutch society on the consequences of Nazi collaboration in the Netherlands. The research team looks forward to discussing its new approaches and results with colleagues from various fields and disciplines in a two day international seminar. We do not solely focus on the history of Nazi-collaboration, but aim to place our methods and results in a broader perspective.

Une histoire à écrire / A history to be written

Les viols commis lors de conflits armés sont bien souvent considérés comme une violence inéluctable. L’expression même de « viol de guerre » les inscrit dans une normalité intemporelle de la guerre. Parce que les victimes sont dans la plupart des cas des civils et des femmes, ils furent longtemps relégués au second plan. Ainsi placés à la marge du champ de bataille, on pensait les viols entre butin et repos du guerrier. Sans effet sur le cours de la guerre, n’y était vu, que l’assouvissement, certes violent, de la pulsion sexuelle masculine.Depuis une trentaine années, des travaux ont été réalisés dans différentes disciplines. Ce colloque a pour ambition de promouvoir une approche du viol en temps de guerre comme sujet d’histoire. Le propos n’est pas de l’ériger au préalable en violence suprême et oubliée, mais, en prenant en compte les acteurs, les actes et les moments, de s’interroger sur sa place dans les conflits. Il s’agit également d’en cerner la visibilité au moment des faits comme a posteriori. On se demandera ainsi comment le viol peut aller jusqu’à symboliser un conflit, se retrouver au cœur de la dénonciation des atrocités commises par l’ennemi, ou au contraire être évacué des récits, publics comme privés.

Réunissant historiens, anthropologues, sociologues et politistes, ces journées d'étude portent sur les faux et usages de faux administratifs. La falsification de documents officiels est conçue comme un moyen de mieux comprendre les dispositifs de l'administration elle-même, ainsi que les savoirs et savoir-faire auxquels elle donne lieu parmi ses « usagers ». À cette fin, une diversité de contextes impériaux, nationaux ou locaux, à l'époque moderne et contemporaine, sont adoptés comme cas d'étude. Sont plus particulièrement représentés l'Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, sur l'Empire ottoman, la Turquie et le Moyen Orient.
