A dialogue between Anthropology, Geography and History

The purpose of the conference is to explore the interactions between crised and infrastructures starting from a pivotal question: is it possibile to consider transitional processes as moments of "a transformazion that includes some essential elements of the previous phase?" (Pombeni 2013: 12) Or are they to be intended just as a dramatic interruptions and breaks? PhD Students, Post-Docs and Research Fellows of historical, geographical and anthropological training are invited to partecipate in the construction of a moment of dialogue and excange. The aim is to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion that will encompass all historiographical epochs, from antiquity to the present day, and question not only the role of infrastructure in the resolution of crises, but also the various implications of critical moments and of their conception.

Gendered Species: Colette, Gender and Sexual Identities

Although French woman writer Colette was indifferent to and even critical of the feminist movement of the early 1900s, in the way she lived her life as in her fiction, she exemplified financial and social independence and shame-free sexuality, or what would be call today “gender fluidity”. This international conference will show how Colette represents a vibrant and radical expression of feminism in tune with the #MeToo spirit in today's society

    Crime, Justice and Elites

    Historical Capitalism and International Law

From the refugee crisis to climate change, from international terrorism to the ascent of extreme right governments, from increasing inequalities to new identity-based conflicts: the promises of liberal economic globalisation seem to be under attack all over. As a result, reflections on the relations between economy and society are increasingly present in the public debate, notably from the perspective of a more radical critique of the very basis of the capitalist system.

The Presence of Women Editors in the Press Industry (1850-1950)

This panel is part of the 49th annual Northeast modern language association (NeMLA) convention which will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from the 12th until the 15th of April 2018. We wish to examine the active participation of women in the public dialogue through the prism of their periodical publications. By looking into their practices of textual transfer, their editorial strategies and the transnational networks that they established, this panel sheds light on the content, structure, and functions of the periodical press in the long 19th century. Scholars are encouraged to explore the ways in which women’s journals shaped socio-cultural transitions by conducting comparative research across nations, cultures, and historical periods.

Printing and misprinting: Typographical mistakes and publishers’ corrections (1450-1600)

This one-day symposium – opening with a keynote lecture by Anthony Grafton (Princeton) – aims to explore the notions of typos and manuscript or stop-press emendations in early modern print shops. Building on Grafton’s seminal work, scholars are invited to present new evidence on what we can learn from misprints in relation to publishers’ practices, printing and pre-publication procedures, and editorial strategies between 1450 and 1600.

Victorians like us – Domesticity and worldliness

    Issue of “Open Cultural Studies”

From novels to government reports, the Victorians attached unprecedented significance to domesticity. The household was a central institution, and their occupants played out their different roles according to custom and circumstance. Within its sphere, gender, class, economic and political conflicts were played out as the household provided the background for important social practices. These practices ranged from the kitchen to the parlour, from the street to the Houses of Parliament, from the colonial metropole to the British colonial outposts in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

Four Post-doctoral positions on "Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe"

New Europe College - Institute for Advanced Study

Following the European Research Council competition for Consolidator Grants (2014), New Europe College became the Host Institution of such a grant. The project title is Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe and its Principal Investigator is Constanţa Vintilă-Ghiţulescu, researcher at New Europe College and at the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History in Bucharest. The project aims to trace the role luxury played in the modernisation process in South-Eastern Europe, taking into account the specific features of the region and how South-Eastern European peoples, and their Byzantine and Ottoman heritage are viewed through the stereotype of “Balkanism”. The project’s findings will help towards a better knowledge of changes in European society in its transition to modernity, and of similarities and differences between the various regions of Europe.

The Noses and Eyes of the City

Reinterpreting Early Modern Politics and Administrative Practices of Hygiene

The Specialist Session welcomes contributions that deal with questions of medical and administrative debates and with techniques of controlling and monitoring of the urban space by city authorities and the urban population. The aim is to create a basis for understanding contemporary hygienic assumptions concerning life in urban spaces. The papers may be focused on questions of practice, concerning the contemporary considerations to improve city space, political agenda, procedures to implement them and the “instruments” – that is most importantly: the use of senses – to control the implementation. The Contributions of this session will therefore challenge the “modern”, deprecated view on early modern hygienic questions and replace it with a view that is based on contemporary theories and contemporary instruments: the noses and eyes of the city.

Collecting Cases: Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries Visions of Society

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries case studies focusing on deviant behaviour (such as crime, suicide or mental illness) and exceptional situations became an important part of both popular culture and the emerging human sciences. The goal of this workshop is to explore how these collections of cases, through their inclusions, exclusions and narrative and rhetorical strategies, comment on and convey an image of the society of their times or of the (recent) past. The long-term aim of this project is to publish an edited volume exploring these issues.

The Many Faces of Slavery: non-traditional slave experiences in the Atlantic World

By the 18th century, racial slavery had matured into a fully-fledged, firmly established, profitable form of labour in the Atlantic World. In slave societies, the development of the plantation unit led both to the geographical concentration of the slave population and to a growing homogenization of the activities bondsmen performed. However, throughout the Atlantic World, the existence of phenomena such as urban slavery, slave self-hiring, quasi-free or nominal slaves, domestic slave concubines, slave vendors, slave sailors, slave preachers, slave overseers, and many other types of “societies with slaves,” broadens our traditional conception of slavery by complicating the slave experience. This conference does not aim to challenge the significance of the plantation system, but, by using it as a paradigm, seeks to assess the extent and nature of non-traditional forms of slavery in the context of the historical evolution of labour in the Atlantic World.
