Maritime Knowledge for Asian Seas
An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists
This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16th-18th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.

Publicity, space and time (Europe, 17th to 19th century)
Although bankruptcy was a rather exceptional situation in the life of a merchant, it has explanatory power for routines of economic stakeholders, for their space of experience and their horizon of expectation. We can therefore use the irregularity of failure as an indicator of regularities. Considering the long, non-uniform and unsteady transition from merchant capitalism to industrial and financial capitalism, we suggest to start a dialogue between modernistes and contemporanéistes. The workshop focuses on the various forms of contextualizing business failure and puts forward three major research axes: Covering and Uncovering: Secrecy and Publicity; Economic Space and Area of Jurisdiction; Temporal Narratives of (In)Solvency.

In the television age, health and the body have been broadcasted in many ways: in short health education films, school television, professional training materials, TV ads, documentaries, reality TV shows and news, as well as stand-alone videos distributed to specific audiences. This three-day conference proposes an exploration of how television formats have influenced and staged bodies, health and healthy practices from local, regional, national and international perspectives, and how these TV programmes spread the conviction that viewers could and should invest in their health and shape their own body.

Objects of Exchange. Art and Economic Encounters
Exchange is classically described by economists as a phenomenon of equalization of values within a given system. When heterogeneous orders of economic rationalities meet, material objects and practices come to embody the paradoxes of dissonant exchange. This symposium aims to explore how artifacts and artistic practices have materialized ruptures within, and encounters between, economic systems in the modern and contemporary period.

Through the prism of objects and material culture, the workshop intends to highlight broad patterns of transregional circulation of people and goods crossing the boarders of Ottoman, Venetian, Russian and Habsburg Empires. The papers will present and discuss a wide variety of unpublished textual and visual sources related to luxury consumption, fashion and dress codes; diplomatical and political exchanges; dowry contracts and travel journals.

This conference aims at presenting a critical overview of issues related to neoliberalism in the Anglophone world. It will be broad in scope by covering British, American and the other English-speaking areas, as well as the fields of civilisation, literature and linguistics, while maintaining a thematic focus on the concept of neoliberalism from international and interdisciplinary perspectives.

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

Relations climat-sociétés en Méditerranée pendant les deux derniers millénaires
État des connaissances et perspectives de recherche
L’objectif de cette conférence de deux jours est de mettre en avant des travaux interdisciplinaires récents et innovants sur les relations historiques complexes entre climat et société(s) en Méditerranée au cours des deux derniers millénaires. En effet, si les questions relatives aux conséquences futures du changement climatique pour les sociétés méditerranéennes sont nombreuses et variées, l’analyse de l’impact des fluctuations hydro-météorologiques passées (e.g. épisodes de sécheresse) sur la dynamique et la vie des populations urbaines et rurales, à différentes époques, peut permettre de mieux saisir le rôle de l’environnement dans l’apparition de conflits locaux ou régionaux, le déclenchement d’épidémies, l’apparition de disettes ou de famines, de migrations. Elle peut aussi permettre de faire ressortir les réponses et adaptations sociales, politiques ou technologiques mises en œuvre.

This conference is the result of a cooperation between the Wittgenstein-Prize Project ‘Mobility, Microstructes and Personal Agency’ of the FWF (Austrian National Research Foundation), acting as the local host, and the Laboratoire d’Excellence RESMED (Religions et sociétés dans le monde méditerranéen, University of Paris-Sorbonne), the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS, UMR 8167, Paris), as well as the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (IFAO, Cairo), the École française de Rome (EfR) and the University of Nantes (CRHIA), who have organized the previous two conferences in this series in Rome.

The aim of the POMEDOR project (People, Pottery and Food in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean) was to explore this new field in a multidisciplinary way and to stimulate further research.

Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries
What are “Venetian” commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts. This conference focuses on the question of how Venice designed and exported its own identity through all kinds of its goods.

The objective of the 15th Border Regions in Transition (BRIT) Conference organized by the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Hamburg and the HafenCity University Hamburg on May 17-20 2016 is to rethink the complicated relationships that bind cities, urban development and state borders. The conference will offer a unique opportunity to explore the collaborative or competitive strategies of this odd couple under the current circumstances of globalization.

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. Travail et société : la part du féminin
En France, l’histoire des femmes a connu un grand essor depuis une trentaine d’années, mais les recherches sont concentrées sur l’Occident. Or, dans le domaine très vaste de l’histoire mésopotamienne, il existe de nombreuses études ponctuelles en histoire des femmes et du genre, mais encore peu de synthèses. L’histoire économique est, par ailleurs, un domaine bien représenté en assyriologie, du fait de la conservation de dizaines de milliers de tablettes d’argile enregistrant des opérations administratives, des contrats, ainsi que des actes relevant du droit familial. En dépit de cette richesse, l’histoire du travail est restée un parent pauvre de l’histoire économique. Le colloque a pour ambition d’envisager les occupations économiques dans lesquelles interviennent des femmes, dans une perspective du genre, sur les trois millénaires d’histoire proche-orientale, en faisant participer une trentaine de chercheurs de divers pays.

Scotland, Europe and Empire in the Age of Adam Smith and Beyond
Hosted by the Centre Roland Mousnier, the ECSSS (Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society) and the International Adam Smith Society will hold a conference at the Sorbonne in Paris, from the 3rd to the 6th of July 2013. The theme of the conference will be : Scotland, Europe and Empire in the Age of Adam Smith and Beyond. The conference will tackle the question of the role of Scotland and Adam Smith’s thought in the constitution of the British Empire (and the other empires) during the Eighteenth Century, from America to Asia.

Transfers of precious metals and their consequences (17th-20th centuries)
After the first Round Table, in Paris at the École normale supérieure in January 2012, "Moneys and Economies during 19th Century, from Europe to Asia", a second Round Table will be organized in the framework of the program DAMIN, in cooperation with the Casa de Velázquez and the LabEx TransferS (École normale supérieure, Paris). Precious metals were often transferred from a region, or a country, to another: looting of conquered regions (such as Roman Spain, Gaul or Egypt), invasions (Vandals, Huns invading the Roman Empire, Crusaders arriving at Constantinople), and, of course arrival of gold and silver from Americas after 1492. Each time, the new metal disturbed the monetary systems, sometimes improving, sometimes troubling the currencies and economies. The period considered is focused on the 19th century, the question of the depreciation of silver and the transfers of metals from America or Europe to Asia, India, China, etc.

Ressources publiques et construction étatique en Europe
Fiscalité et dette publique (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècle)
Les trois premières demi-journées du colloque seront consacrées à l'analyse de la mobilisation des ressources publiques qui a accéléré la construction des États médiévaux et modernes en Europe occidentale. Les arbitrages entre modes de financement par la fiscalité, le crédit et l'émission monétaire, les orientations liées aux divers types de régimes politiques, l'émergence des premiers marchés financiers pour les titres de dette publique fourniront trois axes thématiques majeurs. La dernière demi-journée sera consacrée à : « ressources publiques et construction européenne, dettes souveraines et gouvernance de la zone Euro ». Les intervenants s'interrogeront sur la récurrence des questionnements entre hier et aujourd'hui et l'impact de la crise des dettes souveraines sur le processus d'intégration européenne. -

Quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction
Après Madrid (2003), Cambridge (2006), Cottbus (2009), Paris a été choisie pour accueillir le quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction. Trois écoles d'architecture (Paris-Malaquais, Paris-La Villette et Versailles) ainsi que le Conservatoire des arts et métiers pilotent cet évènement. L'histoire de la construction apparaît par définition hybride, associant aussi bien la conception que la réalisation, comme la préservation, la technique que la culture, et se trouve de fait interdisciplinaire. Y participent aussi bien des historiens de toutes disciplines (archéologues, juristes, économistes, historiens de l'art, etc.) que des praticiens (ingénieurs, architectes, entrepreneurs, artisans). Plus de 350 chercheurs, enseignants et praticiens, vont présenter le dernier état de leur recherche dans ce champ et en débattre sur quatre sites parisiens et versaillais. 6 conférences plénières seront délivrées par des personnalités reconnues par leurs pairs. Normes, institutions et pratiques économiques illégales dans l'Europe méditerranéenne (16e-19e siècles)
La relation entre normes, institutions et développement économique fait l'objet d'importantes recherches récentes de la part des historiens et des économistes. L'atelier sur la « fraude » affronte cette question en proposant d'étudier, à partir des fréquentes pratiques illégales des acteurs sociaux, la régulation croissante du commerce méditerranéen à l'époque du mercantilisme.
