Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries

Africa 2020

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

Africa 2020: Artistic, digital, and political creation in english-speaking African countries

The peer-reviewed journal of Aix-Marseille Université research centre on Anglophone Studies (LERMA), E-rea, has decided to seize the opportunity of Africa 2020 to dedicate a special issue to contemporary artistic, digital, and political creation in English-speaking African countries. Heeding Kenyan political analyst Nanjala Nyabola’s advice to eschew the too reductive ‘Africa rising’ and ‘Africa failing’ narratives in favour of ‘Africa being’ stories, this special issue wishes to focus on “stories reflecting the ambivalence, complexity, challenges and opportunities of African societ[ies] in an increasingly connected world”.

The ultimate purpose of the International Congress on Desert Economy – Dakhla, is to be a scientific and multidisciplinary platform on desert and Sahara economy development, in order to contribute effectively to the good governance and in the sustainable development of desert regions, by stimulating meetings between all stakeholders on a global scale, with a view to fostering cooperation and partnership, among (Sahara) desert countries (Africa, the Gulf States, the United States of America, China, Australia...), with the aim of creating a conducive environment to the exchange of experiences, expertise and innovation, around themes related to desert and Sahara economy development, such as: Tourism and travel industry, agriculture, renewable energy, raw materials, transportation and logistics, sea and ocean economy, technology and innovation, entertainment and sport economy, cultural and intangible heritage, nature and environment.

La notion de développement est associée en Éthiopie à la fois à une perception « optimiste » qui met en exergue les réussites du modèle de developmental state mis en œuvre dans le pays, et à une version « pessimiste » du pays qui se concentre sur la réduction de la pauvreté.

Training school

This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

Government by Expertise: Technocrats and Technocracy in Western Europe, 1914-1973

Technocracy is the political swearword of our times. From the multiple crises of the European Union to the recent elections in the United States, the role of experts in public governance is often invoked as one of the main sources for the political ills of contemporary society, responsible for the exacerbation of social inequalities, the decline in the acceptance of political institutions, and the rise of populist movements. This conference will look at the genealogy of technocracy and the trajectories of various groups of “experts” in western Europe’s mid-20^th century.

Social Rights and Democracy

We are especially interested in manuscripts on social rights and democracy. Our intent is to prepare a set of discussions on how democracies promote social rights today, i.e., to what extent social movements, legal institutions, parliaments and executive power are able to find solutions to the challenges of democracies today? Have, for example, affirmative action, housing and health care programs, and even direct financial assistance to the poor actually reduced inequality? In addition, what are the most effective solutions for poverty? Are courts the best way to ensure social rights today? We are also interested in papers that address the costs of social programs. These are some of the possibilities, but many other questions may be brought to the table. We encourage submissions based on historical approaches carried out by jurists, political scientists, historians, sociologists, and other professionals in fields that have particular focus on legal problems.

Ce colloque international s’intéressera aux liens entre l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l’époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l’âge industriel jusqu’aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l’étude du contenu et de l’évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique. Pour étudier à la fois le contenu des échanges et leur évolution, deux axes seront privilégiés : les relations culturelles et scientifiques en lien avec l’évolution des regards mutuels du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle ; l’évolution des relations économiques du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle.

Diplomatie globale et ressources naturelles

Enjeux, pratiques et influences des acteurs non-étatiques (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle)

La fin de la guerre froide a été l’occasion de (re)découvrir le poids des acteurs non-étatiques dans une diplomatie de plus en plus mondialisée. Selon Richard Langhorne, c’est avec le Congrès de Vienne de 1961 que s’amorce le processus de déliquescence de la diplomatie classique née au XVII^e siècle dans laquelle seuls les États jouaient véritablement un rôle. Cet affaiblissement progressif des États a conduit à l’effacement des frontières traditionnelles entre ce qui relève de l’action diplomatique officielle et des relations internationales plus informelles, menées en marge des États. Le poids croissant de divers acteurs non-étatiques sur la scène internationale est un signe révélateur de cette transition.
