Developing a sense of belonging in diverse societies
Hui-Muslims in China and Muslims in Europe
The aim of this workshop is to gather scholars who work on Hui-Muslims in China and Muslims in Europe to compare the similitudes and differences of identity practices. Hui are predominantly Chinese speaking Muslims in China’s vast territory. With a population of 10 million, they are also the most numerous recognized ethnic group in China. Muslims in Europe are hardly featured in international media, domestic politics, and scholarly discussions. Multiculturalism, radicalisation, immigration, integration, forced marriage are discussed through the Muslim visibility and presence in Europe. Recent debates on integration and secularism are focused on the "Muslim question". In contrast to the focus on Muslims in Europe, there is a notable lack of interest in Muslims in China with the exception of the Uyghur community. In this workshop, we want to study the impact of ethnic-religious interactions, state integration positions and policies to grasp the increasing influence of religious-collective-national expression of Muslims in the public sphere. We would like to examine the new patterns of expression and visibility of the Muslims in China and Europe. Tracing Muslim’s interaction with non-Muslims, this workshop investigates how Muslims encounters, accommodates and negotiates into different socio political contexts in China and Europe.

Dix ans après le 11 septembre : qu’avons-nous appris ?
The tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 provides an opportunity to reflect upon and assess what we have learned—and not learned—about communication and conflict. Some commentators have stated that “everything changed after 9/11”. However, it is important to inquire into what changed and what continues to operate within the conceptual frameworks that have existed for decades, even centuries. Papers are invited for this issue of the Global Media Journal -- Canadian Edition that will focus on the role of communication and media in conflicts and conflict resolution since 9/11. -

Religion in Europe, religion and Europe
Recent debates have focused on the institutional issues raised by the relations between religion and European integration, such as the Churches’ participation in EU governance, references to the Christian heritage of Europe in the preamble of the Constitutional treaty, or the revival of denominational powers within national arenas. Meanwhile, belief is nowadays developing in Europe essentially through individualized and deregulated forms which are no longer under the control and the mediation of organized political and spiritual institutions. This workshop aims to analyse both institutional and non-institutional religious phenomena in their interaction with the Europeanization process experienced by State members. -
