    The impact of terrorism

    Violence: An international journal

Terrorism has an impact on the societies that it affects or targets. While this impact can be one-off or limited, nowadays—with the terrorism of radical Islamic groups such as al-Qaeda and, more recently, ISIS—it tends to be heavy and long lasting, even if it does change over time. Its political implications relate first and foremost to democracy and the separation of powers, and can lead to the unraveling and abuse of existing structures, in ways that work to the government’s advantage. If the impact of terrorism is lasting, it becomes cultural: individuals change their habits and behaviors, learning for example not to be passive in the event of a terrorist attack, and going about their daily lives keeping in the back of their minds the possibility that a terrorist attack could take place. Terrorism changes people’s understanding of reality. Terrorism also gives rise to policies that are repressive, but also preventive, or those aimed at exiting violence, using deradicalization programs for example.

    1989’s contested legacies

The challenging of ideological, institutional and (geo)political heritage

This conference aims at rethinking the legacy of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through the prism of its ongoing contestations, with a focus on the current trends and deliberate political efforts that challenge the major achievements of Velvet Revolutions as well as the outcomes of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. 1989 launched a process that continues to this day. Three decades of transformations, crises and setbacks have noticeably changed the shape of Central and Eastern European societies.

Tourism in Indonesia and Southern Countries

    A vector of sustainable development?

The objective of the conference is to analyze the effect of tourism, questioning more specifically in this second edition its potential for becoming a vector of sustainable development, understood in its more general sense. Within this framework, we will question its economic impact, as well as its social effects, on Indonesia and Southern countries. We are interested in knowing how extra income is redistributed to the local population and whether it affects, or on the contrary, strengthens the traditional organizations of the communities, bringing new actors, investors, decision-makers in the traditional social organization.

Beyond the Periphery: Unpacking African Agency in Global Politics

    Post-soviet dis-integration and dis-connections (1991-2016)

25 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, this conference aims at investigating its transversal consequences from two original standpoints: patterns of integration/disintegration combined to logics of connection / disconnection. These issues have various expressions in societal, normative, linguistic, regional or international fields. The conference will hence tackle a general question: how do political choices, economic contingencies or social phenomena foster or disrupt all kinds of links throughout the post-soviet area?

    Entangled Transitions

Between Eastern and Southern Europe 1960s-2014

In under two decades, authoritarian political systems collapsed across Europe – in the south of the continent in the 1970s, and then in the east between 1989 and 1991. Although much work has been done on these processes in each region, and comparative work carried out on post-authoritarian transitions and memories, there has yet to be any sustained scholarship that examines the ‘entangledness’ of these processes in the context of broader European and global processes of the late Cold War and its aftermath. Taking a longue durée approach, this conference will explore these inter-relationships between the 1960s and the present day. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of state socialism and the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the transition from dictatorship on the Iberian Peninsula and in Greece: an ideal time to consider the relationship between these processes that have been central to modern European history.

The Health and Wealth of US Capitalism: A Critical Condition?

    (Dis)placed childhoods

Forced migrations and youth welfare policies of the 19th and 20th centuries
