Ils pourront autant porter sur son histoire que sur les grandes mutations sociales et culturelles qui ont traversé sa société. Il s’agit d’explorer les différents aspects observables aujourd’hui et qui participent à une meilleure compréhension de ce pays à travers le temps.

Decentring the “Flâneur”: walking the early modern city

Ideas about the origins and context for the flâneur have been tied to Paris, and viewed through the lens of Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project. While Benjaminian orthodoxy has increasingly been challenged, the association of the flâneur with modernity and European cities has continued to dominate studies of its variant forms. This conference aims to de-centre the concept and expand such critique by identifying and analysing forms of pedestrian observation in the early modern period taking note of the fact that strolling, seeing and being seen—and walking the city—emerged well before Europe and the 19^th century in urban experiences in cities like Istanbul, Isfahan, Delhi and Beijing.

Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities

Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes

La diversité architecturale et urbanistique caractérisant les villes méditerranéennes est indissociable de leur identité. Il semble évident que cette diversité et cette multiplicité d'indentités sont à considérer comme une des plus grandes valeurs culturelles et humaines. La cohabitation des formes dans le temps et dans l'espace, les mélanges entre les cultures urbaines et architecturales, les influences et les contaminations voire même les contrastes et les contradictions identitaires qui se révèlent sur le territoire urbain méditerranéen traduisent traduisent la stratification de la ville dans ses implications pragmatiques et ses significations identitaires. Aujourd'hui, dans un contexet de mise en concurrence et d'attractivité des territoires, plusieurs villes méditerranéennes connaissent de profondes mutations. Face à ces transformations, la référence à des "territoires identitaires" (Troin, 2004) et la capacité de la ville à se construire une identité et à la diffuser sont remises en question.

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

Border towns and the resilience of frontiers in Early Modern cities

The session welcomes contributions that deal with questions of shifting borders and how these shifts impacted the political, social, economic or religious organization of a given city or cities in Europe. Papers may focus on questions of practice, concerning the resilience of local political elites and administrations or the local population. They may also deal with the contemporary considerations to change the space of both cities and states, political agendas, procedures to implement them and the 'instruments' to control these implementations.

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Christianity emerged as an urban phenomenon, yet monasticism is more often than not presented as an escape from the sinful town into the wilderness, and as more concerned with the soul than with the body. Ascetics, however, have always had a vested interest in the city, and not only symbolically. Monasticism has been an important urban presence since Late Antiquity up to the Late Middle Ages, even if they were sometimes in competition with newer religious orders.

L’évocation commémorative des conquêtes de Lisbonne, en 1147 et d’Alcacer do Sal en 1217, est le prétexte pour un débat plus ample autour de ces questions : pas seulement de ces événements et de leurs significations et impacts, mais aussi de tout le contexte plus vaste qui les entoure et qui les explique, dans la diversité des chemins qui se sont dessinés et redessinés, aussi bien dans l’espace péninsulaire, que dans le cadre plus global qui liait l’Occident et l’Orient.

Representing the Urban Underbelly in the Nineteenth Century

In conjunction with the exhibitions Easy Virtue: Prostitution in French Art, 1850-1910 (Van Gogh Museum) and Breitner: Girl in Kimono (Rijksmuseum), ESNA (European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art) organizes its annual two-day international conference around the topic of the “urban underbelly” and its depiction in nineteenth-century art. Both exhibitions explore the depiction of women in the margins of urban life – the prostitute, the model, working (class) women, and the women of the entertainment industry.
