  It is not possible to ignore the fact that cities are not only moving, vibrant and flourishing spaces, promising hope for better quality of life, but also accumulate and reflect significant problems. We need to recognise the complexity of economic, political, social, cultural and environmental mechanisms, which strengthen existing inequalities and add a great deal of uncertainty to life in cities and urban spaces of the globalised world. We want to gain a better understanding of the impact and consequences of inequality and uncertainty on the urban arena as much as the responses to current challenges in terms of  both informal and institutional practices.

  1st PhD Workshop - European research program CAPA.CITY

  Within the framework of the research program CAPA.CITY, a PhD workshop is organized around the question of suburban retrofitting. The workshop will notably question the capacities that need to be mobilized and associated, or even hybridized, in order to transform existing residential subdivisions. The originality of this approach lies in the interrogation of creating negotiation spaces between individual, collective and common interests, so that collective capacities could be built between the different actors (inhabitants, professionals, institutions) implicated in the transformation of residential subdivisions.

  Urban Kinships. Everyday Kinship and the making of the City

  “Articulo”, Journal of Urban Research

  Social sciences were long dominated by the notion that cities are places where kinship ties are weakened (Parsons 1955), but this view is widely challenged today. In addressing “urban kinships,” this Articulo special issue aims to surpass the “great divide” (Weber and Dufy 2007) that still separates the study of kinship (reserved for anthropologists and traditional societies) from the study of the city (the favored field site for sociologists and research on the family). At a time when cities are dissolving into “the urban” and blended families are re-defining kinship, this issue suggests studying the co-production of kinship and the city, through an approach focusing on everyday practices.

  This colloquium aims at contributing to the development of understanding the social dynamics and policies that arise at the crossing point between digital concepts and contemporary urban city as a context. Considering the city as active support of a political and social space mirroring the Greek polis, this scientific event will be registered in anthropology of the relation between “city” and “digital”.   Ph.d. workshop with Saskia Sassen

  Professor Saskia Sassen will take part in a half-a-day international doctoral workshop, which will be the concluding act of a two-day long seminar on denationalisation and territory (7-8 May 2014). Such doctoral seminar aims at providing Ph.D students who work on issues related to globalisation a dynamic and informal space to present their work, receive inputs from discussants and participants and have a chance to discuss with one of the major sociologists in the field. The participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their research questions, to receive informed opinions and to meet other academics working on similar issues in different regional context.

  The examples of Germany and the united Kingdom

  In partnership with Électricité de France (EDF), Paris Institute for Advanced Studies (Paris IAS) is recruiting two high-level international researchers in the humanities and social sciences (or related fields) for a period of nine months, to take part in a research programme on the energy transition of European societies, with particular emphasis on Germany and the UK, from a city to a regional level. Paris IAS will host successful applicants beginning in October 2014 or January 2015, offering them the opportunity to focus entirely on their research while benefiting from a front-ranking scientific environment, and building lasting networks with university and research institutions in Paris and the Île-de-France Region.

  This seminar is the first of a series of three talks which will take place in each of the cities explored. It offers a space for collaboration, reflection and exchanges where explorers, partners, associate members and other leading figures are invited to lend an outside perspective. It is an invitation both to reflect on the project itself and to promote a public discussion of its critical perspectives. For instance, what is “knowledge” for an artist, a researcher or an educator, and how is it constructed ? For what discourse and representations are artists, researchers in the humanities and educators responsible ? What research stance should be adopted to meet the challenges of interdisciplinarity and social space ? How do our disciplines of research, creation and social intervention revisit the historical motive for exploration and what relationship do they have with it ?

  Ambiance and Atmosphere in Translation

  After "Ambience and Urban Practices", and "Ambience and Criticism", this third meeting of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche funded project "Enigmas of contemporary urban mobility”, organized within the framework of the International Ambiances Network, will develop a conversation between ambiance, atmosphere and translation. But how to translate? If translation is understood as a practice of "linguistic hospitality", as an experience of transition and mediation, what form might translation take? How might, in other words, the transition occur between the "daily" word and the word of the "expert", between that of the "living" and that of the "foreign"? How to make shareable experiences beyond the singularity expressed in different languages and cultures? What media or combination of media could help us achieve this?

  This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation.

  Urban Nature through Projects. Towards a new coalition between city and nature

  Intitulé « Nature urbaine en projets », le présent colloque a pour ambition de mieux comprendre et connaître ce qu’il en est du devenir de la ville –sa nature- dès lors qu’elle s’attache à la nature. Car s'il faut bien envisager l’avenir des formes urbaines naturelles –promenades plantées, parcs, jardins- héritées de l’histoire, c’est à l’aune d’une demande sociale de nature, elle-même fluctuante, que cela doit être fait. Et s’il faut dès lors appréhender le devenir des modèles de nature auxquels se réfèrent les architectes, les paysagistes et les urbanistes qui aménagent nos villes en espaces naturels, il convient tout autant d’interroger les mutations du « projet » en tant qu’outil de conception auquel ces professionnels ont recours. Il n’est pas jusque la question de l’ « innovation » architecturale, paysagère et urbanistique qui n’implique la notion de dépassement du présent inhérente aux projets de nature urbaine. Une nouvelle alliance entre nature et ville se dessinerait-elle ?

  The colloquium will try to highlight two issues about urban renewal projects, shared by all European countries. Who’s benefiting from urban projects? How is it possible to renew in a context of crisis? The first day will inquire both the place left to or/and taken by the citizens in urban projects, the targets of these projects and their social impacts. The second day will assess both the financial crisis impacts on governance, especially on the place of private and public sectors, and the environmental constraints to be taken into account in urban renewal.

L'appel à communications de ce colloque se propose d'envisager sur le temps long cette relation entre électricité et mobilité, en interrogeant les pratiques et imaginaires d'une énergie qui, si elle a trouvé des applications concrètes dans le domaine des transports, s'est également bien souvent confrontée à des désillusions. Colloque organisé par l'Université Paris I (laboratoire IRICE UMR 8138) et l'Université Paris Diderot (laboratoire ICT EA 337) avec le soutien de l'ISCC-CNRS.
