Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture
In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

Semantic Web for Scientific Heritage
SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop
Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.

In the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period
The brain has, throughout history, been considered an important achievement in the creation of man, although often secondary to the soul and the heart. Our knowledge about how the brain has been conceived in the past is, however, very fractional, especially for the late Medieval and early modern periods. This conference looks to re-situate the question of knowing the brain anew in a dialogue between medicine (anatomy, physiology and pathology) and natural philosophy (inter alia physics, biology and psychology).

These include works by Ptolemy or attributed to him, commentaries thereupon and other works that are of immediate relevance to understanding Ptolemy’s heritage in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period up to 1700 A.D.

Vivre sainement dans l'Europe moderne. Théorie et pratique des six choses non-naturelles (1400-1700)
This conference seeks to bring together scholars working on topics related to the role played by the six Non-Naturals in health maintenance in the late-medieval and early modern period. It is well-known that health was thought to depend on the regulation of the six key factors affecting body functions: the air one breathes, sleep, food and drink, evacuations, movement and emotions. In pre-modern medicine careful management of these spheres of life was regarded as crucial if one wished to prevent disease.

Collusion or conflict: the relationship between archaeology and politics
Compte tenu de leur importance et de leurs conséquences sur notre culture et l'histoire de nos civilisations, les liens entre l’archéologie et la politique sont d'une actualité brûlante et bien qu’ils soient traités dans les médias ils suscitent souvent des commentaires peu éclairés. Ce sujet aujourd’hui très commun peut être abordé selon deux approches. D’un côté on voit dans l’histoire, ancienne ou récente, voire très actuelle, que, parfois sans hésiter à recourir aux faux les plus grossiers, les pouvoirs politiques ou les nationalismes ont cherché et cherchent encore dans l’archéologie la justification des idéologies ou des revendications les plus contestables. D’un autre côté, on voit bien aussi que la recherche et le sauvetage légitimes des vestiges du passé ainsi que la conservation attendue de ce qui en est mis au jour sont devenus des enjeux politiques, au sens noble du terme, c’est-à-dire qu’ils sont l’affaire de tous, qu’ils font partie, au même titre que la protection de l’environnement, par exemple, des grands dossiers (notamment ceux de l’aménagement du territoire) que doivent désormais prendre en compte les responsables publics, à quelque niveau de décision ou d’exécution, national, international ou même mondial, qu’ils se situent. -
Society for the Study of French History 24th Annual Conference
Proposals are invited for thirty-minute papers (in either English or French) on any aspect of French history from the late medieval to the modern period. Proposals for panels of two or three papers are also invited. Les communications d’une durée de trente minutes (en anglais ou en français) porteront sur tout aspect de l’histoire de France de la fin de la période médiévale jusqu’à nos jours. Des propositions d’un panel de deux ou trois communications seront les bienvenues ainsi que des contributions de doctorants. -
Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age II
It is only a year since the Institute of Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) undertook an initiative entitled “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age”. Yet its first results have already been written up and published: in July 2009, the anthology “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age” was launched at an international symposium in Munich. Despite the fact that the anthology gives a broad insight into theory and practice, some relevant subjects and questions have not been covered. For this reason the IDE plans to publish a second volume of “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age”. The University Library of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań will host the conference „Culture of memory in East Central Europe”. The conference will be held in the Research Center and Library of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Ciążeń, in the neighborhood of Poznań, with accommodations in the former Bishop’s Palace in Ciążeń.
