Bearing Witness to Traumatic Experiences: Cultural Productions of Uyghurs in Exile

PhD position in Asian Studies

This Ph.D. position is funded by a MIS (Mandat d’Impulsion Scientifique/ Incentive Grant for Scientific Research) project: “Bearing Witness to Traumatic Experiences: Cultural Productions of Uyghurs in Exile”. Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking people based at the border of Central Asia and the north-western part of China. Massive internments and arrests of hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs have taken place in the region since 2016, including the Uyghur elite. In these conditions, centers of the cultural production of the Uyghurs have shifted from their native land to the diaspora spread across the world. This project looks at Uyghur diasporic cultural production that aims at drawing the world’s attention and bearing witness to the various abuses perpetrated at home by the Chinese government. The whole project analyses selected poems, short films, video clips, and dance and music performances to tackle new transmedial forms of testimonies in the Uyghur case.

PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. International PhD Contract 2020-2023

Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan

In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

Cinema and the City

Interdisciplinary perspectives

The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways.

Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century

This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).

New Ethnomusicological Perspectives From the Global South

This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

We invite papers for the 25th issue of the intersdiciplinary academic journal Interstudia, based at the Faculty of Letters, Vasile Alecsandri University of Bacau, Romania. The proposed topic for this issue is "The construction of reality in the post-truth age". We will accept articles written in English, French, Italian and Spanish whose main points of interest will be related to ideas deriving from these following themes for reflection: the role of language in the construction of post-truth, the manipulation of emotion in the media, ethics and post-truth, the role of humanities in the preservation of human values, truth versus opinion in the post-truth society, the relation among data, information and knowledge, ICT and post-truth, the role of numerical devices in the propagation of post-truth attitudes. Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula

This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).
