Comparing property markets on an international scale
While many scholars compare property markets from the same urban area or compare the way these markets distinguish urban areas within a given country, very few propose an international comparison. And yet, this is a main scientific issue. Such comparisons would provide a new angle for studying metropolitan development as well as its internal trends relating to inequality and gentrification.

It is not possible to ignore the fact that cities are not only moving, vibrant and flourishing spaces, promising hope for better quality of life, but also accumulate and reflect significant problems. We need to recognise the complexity of economic, political, social, cultural and environmental mechanisms, which strengthen existing inequalities and add a great deal of uncertainty to life in cities and urban spaces of the globalised world. We want to gain a better understanding of the impact and consequences of inequality and uncertainty on the urban arena as much as the responses to current challenges in terms of both informal and institutional practices.

Geomedia is an emerging concept that has been deployed to capture a particular technological condition, associated with recent rapid developments in digital technology. As such, it signals to the dialectics of locative media and the mediations of localities. However, the concept of geomedia carries deeper/wider ontological and epistemological registers that transcend the simple twining of geography and media. In this wider sense, geomedia gestures to the expanding interdisciplinary terrain at the crossroads of media studies and geography, where various ontologies and epistemologies of space/time, flows/mobilities and mediation/ mediatization come together. The aim of this special issue is to explore the urban as a key terrain where these ontologies and epistemologies are articulated.

Urban Kinships. Everyday Kinship and the making of the City
“Articulo”, Journal of Urban Research
Social sciences were long dominated by the notion that cities are places where kinship ties are weakened (Parsons 1955), but this view is widely challenged today. In addressing “urban kinships,” this Articulo special issue aims to surpass the “great divide” (Weber and Dufy 2007) that still separates the study of kinship (reserved for anthropologists and traditional societies) from the study of the city (the favored field site for sociologists and research on the family). At a time when cities are dissolving into “the urban” and blended families are re-defining kinship, this issue suggests studying the co-production of kinship and the city, through an approach focusing on everyday practices.

Can regions understand each other?
Europe and Asia: challenges and crisis-management
Further to the first Europe-Asia conferences exploring regional regime dynamics (France, 2004), policies of regional cooperation (Korea, 2005), interregional competition (France, 2012) and the limits of regional constructions (Kazakhstan, 2014), this 2016 edition will look at the reciprocal understanding of regions and how that is conducive to their capacity (or lack thereof) to monitor crises they undergo, both specific crises and interregional ones. Papers must address original research, in regional dynamics of Asia and Europe, since the end of the cold war and focus on one area among.

This session intends to explain the multiple and complex relationships between tourism and gentrification in the contemporary metropolis. Several questions arise. How does tourism gentrification manifest itself and how does it affect the urban landscapes? What are the impacts for urban design and planning? Who are the actors, the beneficiaries and the victims of tourism gentrification? How do local (tourism) actors cope with tourism gentrification phenomena? What is the impact on local economies, urban functions and services? What are the outcomes for intra-metropolitan territories? What does it mean in terms of metropolitan governance?

Vivre, consommer et agir dans une Palestine glocale
La réalité palestinienne, marquée par le conflit, a le plus souvent été analysée au seul prisme de sa spécificité politique ou culturelle. Or, de nouvelles manières de vivre, de consommer et d’agir inscrites dans un registre global ont vu le jour ces dernières années et sont largement restées inexplorées. Le colloque réunira essentiellement des chercheurs et doctorants en sciences sociales et humaines travaillant sur la Palestine mais sont aussi sollicitées des recherches sur d’autres terrains (Maghreb / Moyen-Orient / Europe) dans une dimension comparative. Ce colloque entend par ailleurs confronter des approches différentes : entre art et science, recherche et action, il fera dialoguer les sciences sociales avec les travaux d’artistes, d’architectes, les pensées et modes d’action de collectifs militants et citoyens.

El presente seminario se anuncia como la primera cita de una serie de tres seminarios que tendrán lugar en cada una de las ciudades exploradas. Ofrece un espacio de trabajo colaborativo, de reflexión y de intercambio alrededor del cual se reúnen los exploradores, los colaboradores, los miembros asociados y los otros participantes, que brindan su visión externa. Asimismo, sentará las bases para reflexionar sobre el proyecto en sí y dialogar abiertamente sobre sus perspectivas críticas. Por ejemplo, ¿qué significa el conocimiento para un artista, un investigador o un pedagogo? ¿Cómo se construye? ¿De qué discursos y representaciones son responsables los artistas, los investigadores de ciencias sociales y los pedagogos? ¿Qué enfoque de investigación adoptar de cara a la interdisciplinariedad y la intervención social? ¿De qué manera nuestras disciplinas de investigación, de creación o de intervención social revierten el motivo histórico de la expedición? O, ¿qué relación tienen las disciplinas con ese motivo?

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration
Les organisateurs de cette journée d’étude s'intéressent aux initiatives visant à introduire des projets innovants dans les villes, en particulier les villes ayant subi des transformations radicales ces vingt dernières années. Nous nous intéressons à des situations où les approches traditionnelles sont influencées par des stratégies nouvelles initiées par des groupes de pression composés d’architectes/designers, de groupes d’habitants ou des gouvernements locaux (municipalités ou autre). Cette journée d’étude souhaite explorer la question du recours à l’expertise des habitants ou des spécialistes du terrain dans le domaine de la rénovation urbaine : cette expertise est-elle intégrée dans des projets ? Comment ? Peut-elle servir à répondre au phénomène accru de fragmentation urbaine ?

Ecoquartiers – Quartiers verts : Où en est-on en Grèce ?
La vitesse de la conception et la mise en place des écoquartiers est aujourd’hui sans précédant ! Le développement durable trouve enfin son application opérationnelle idéale sur l’espace. Les thématiques et les options sont variées et extrêmement intéressantes : modes de déplacement alternatifs, circulation bien limitée des voitures privées, bâtiments basse consommation, ou bâtiments à énergie zéro ou positive, utilisation des eaux pluviales, matériaux écologiques, mixité sociale et urbaine, combinaison avec le logement social, promotion de modes de vie durables en général... Les écoquartiers sont partout de projets urbains exemplaires, promus par leurs communautés en tant que « vitrines» de savoir-faire technique et d’action durable, mais aussi en tant qu'outils de communication tant au niveau national que international. -

Cette session au onzième colloque international d’histoire urbaine prétend les explorer. -

Coloquio - Época contemporánea
Ce colloque clôture un projet ANR mené au Centre d'études des mondes russe, caucasien et centre européen (CERCEC, CNRS/EHESS), intitulé « Caucase et Asie Centrale : un autre Sud ? ». Il rassemblera à Almaty, outre les membres de l'équipe du projet, une cinquantaine de participants venus d'Asie Centrale, du Caucase, de Russie, d'Europe des Etats Unis et du Japon. Pluridisciplianire, ce colloque a pour ambition d’interroger la pertinence des outils heuristiques élaborés à partir de terrains situés au « Sud », mais aussi de la notion même de « Sud(s) » pour appréhender les périphéries méridionales de l’espace post-soviétique. Il entend réunir des chercheurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales (sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques, géographie, anthropologie, démographie, économie).
