The National University of Colombia and the Department of Citizen Culture of the Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sport of Bogota, Colombia have joined forces to organize the upcoming XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes (SIPC). The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

Music, Tradition and Creativity in the Digital Era

New Ethnomusicological Perspectives From the Global South

This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

Transnational dimensions of dealing with the past in ‘Third Wave’ democracies

Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the Former Soviet Union in Global Perspective

This conference aims to fill the gap by looking at how post-dictatorial justice and memory experiences in Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union after the “third wave of democratization” have reciprocally affected each other. It also seeks to unpack how memorialization practices in these regions were shaped by and influenced in turn criminalization discourses in other geographical contexts (Latin America, Asia, Africa). The conference focuses on transnational activism, transfers of knowledge, and expertise at bilateral, regional or international levels, the impact of legal and mnemonic narratives outside their countries of origin, and the role of international organizations and NGO's in dealing with mass violence. The conference aims thus to trace the mutlidirectional circulation of ideas, norms and models of reckoning with authoritarian regimes both within these regions, and between them and other areas of the world.

Según el historiador Franklin Pease, ‘hacer una historia de la subversión en el Perú con elemental seriedad, requiere disponer de información confiable, casi nunca al alcance del investigador’. Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. Le séminaire « Partager l'information environnementale » propose de dresser un premier bilan des questionnements et débats liés à la diffusion de données environnementales en accès libre, dans la perspective d'une analyse de l'impact social et territorial de ce processus d'importance croissante. Articulant études de cas de diffusion et réflexions méthodologiques sur la mesure des impacts sociaux et territoriaux, ce séminaire porte prioritairement sur l'Amérique latine, mais est ouvert à des contributions d'autres continents. Il se tiendra à Porto Alegre du 23 au 24 août 2012 (Brésil).

Le programme Chaires croisées a été instauré en 2007 afin de promouvoir des démarches scientifiques d’excellence dans le domaine de la recherche pour le développement. Une chaire croisée réunit deux chercheurs ou enseignants-chercheurs confirmés, l’un du Nord, l’autre du Sud. Le « croisement » n’implique pas un échange de postes mais un échange d’idées et d’activités autour d’un projet de recherche et de formation commun élaboré en partenariat avec une unité de recherche de l’IRD. La durée du financement est d’un an, renouvelable une fois.

Organized by UMR 201, RUME India, Mexico, Madagascar, CIESAS (Mexico) (www.rume-rural-microfinance.org). The main purpose of this interdisciplinary workshop will be a theoretical and empirical examination of over-indebtedness from the perspective of southern countries, with the following underlying hypothesis: to define and analyze the process of indebtedness requires first an understanding of the complexity and diversity of debt relationships. The following questions might be addressed: 1) The social meaning of debt, creditworthiness and over-indebtedness. 2) Financial ‘markets’ and financial providers. 3) Financial culture. 4) Impoverishment and accumulation. 5) Over-indebtedness.
