Special issue of the Journal of Festive Studies

In previous issues, the Journal of Festive Studies explored the emerging academic sub-field of festive studies (broadly defined) and the politics of carnival. For this issue, we follow Peter-Paul Verbeek’s advice and look at “the things themselves,” i.e. at the material culture in which carnivals and other festivities are rooted (Verbeek, 2005).

Beyond toys, the conference will explore the place of tangible objects and novel forms of material culture in play. What are the similarities and the differences, the relationships, between toys and other material devices, such as board games, cards, digital games and media-connected objects? Are there, in play, or in the trans-mediated toys themselves, new forms of materiality?

The three-day conference aims to investigate how television programmes in their multiplicity approached issues like medical progress and its limits, healthy behaviour or new forms of exercise by adapting them to TV formats and programming...The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats expressed and staged bodies, health and fitness from local, regional, national and international perspectives. How spectators were invited not only to be TV consuming audiences, but how shows and TV set-ups integrated and sometimes pretended to transform the viewer into a participant of the show. TV programmes spread the conviction that subjects had the ability to shape their own body.

Food at the heart of nineteenth-century art

This symposium intends to study the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and nineteenth-century art. For this conference, we welcome papers that discuss how the development of the food industry and the changing notion of “taste” and social mores are reflected in nineteenth-century art in the broadest sense. Papers may concern visual arts including graphic arts in the form of illustrated advertisements and culinary literature, as well as nouveautés (objects which were designed to reflect the evolution of eating and table manners).

Ovidius University (Constanta, Romania), a modern and vibrant research university on the Black Sea coast, welcomes dialogue-oriented researchers and practitioners to be held on 25-26 September 2015 to the 3rd ESTIDIA Conference. The conference serves as a discussion forum for reserchers to showcase their dialogue-oriented work on current societal and community-related issues, and on methodological approaches to dialogue analysis. The aim is to bring together senior and junior schoolers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and professional orientation to critically explore, through dialogue, different perspectives on human thinking, communication strategies, interpersonal relations, socio-cultural traditions, political processes and business interactions by means of theory-based and practice-driven investigations.

Space, Consumption and Pedagogy

Le colloque « La chambre d’enfant, un microcosme culturel » vise à dresser l’état des connaissances sur la culture matérielle de l’enfant dans l’espace domestique suivant trois axes principaux. Ils ont été retenus pour mieux saisir la chambre d'enfant aussi bien dans son histoire que dans le monde contemporain, dans sa matérialité que dans ses représentations. Le premier envisagera la chambre d’enfant sous l’angle de l’architecture, comme un espace délimité spécifiquement réservé à l'enfant au sein de l'habitat. Le deuxième axe s’attachera à la chambre comme lieu privilégié des biens de l’enfance et de la consommation enfantine. Enfin le dernier axe considérera la chambre comme un espace éducatif, dans lequel peuvent cohabiter perspectives scolaires et univers du divertissement, visées adultes et points de vue enfantins.

The Trade in Luxury and the Luxury of Trade

The production, display, and circulation of precious objects from the Middle-Ages to the present day

Comment se produisent, s’exposent, se diffusent et se consomment les produits du luxe ? Le but du colloque est de revenir sur la question de la spécialisation progressive d’un commerce voué aux objets précieux. Il entend être une manifestation ouverte d’un point de vue chronologique, spatial et disciplinaire, faisant appel à des spécialistes d’horizons différents : histoire, histoire de l’art, économie, littérature, sociologie, etc. Il s’agira de montrer la richesse et la diversité de ce qui était (et reste) compris sous l’appellation de ‘luxe’ et d’observer comment se sont progressivement mis en place des marchés spécialisés. Deux approches spécifiques sont menées, d’une part les acteurs et les marchandises, d’autre part les lieux de vente et la puissance matérielle et symbolique attachée à ce secteur particulier de l’économie. Le colloque aura lieu les jeudi 22 et vendredi 23 novembre 2012 à Lyon (Musée Gadagne). La date-limite pour la soumission des propositions est le 31 décembre 2011.
