Dissenting Voices: The Making, Debating, and Shaping of Law

While laws, reforms, and public policies are often assumed to be coherent (Holm Vohnsen 2017), dissenting opinions, contradicting trends in the jurisprudence, and variations in daily administrative practices suggest otherwise. Breaking away from the assumption that legal regimes speak with one, unanimous voice, this workshop will explore the place and the role of dissenting voices in the way legality is constructed.

Locating negative affects in post-reform China

This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

MAT – first issue online

MAT seeks to rethink medicine, medicines, and medical systems in local and global contexts, within the broad fields of medical anthropology, science and technology studies (STS), and global health. In line with our commitment to open access, accepted articles (up to 10,000 words) will be written in clear language that makes insights available to a wide readership. The editors seek to publish work that innovates both theoretically and methodologically, or that revisits classical anthropological theory in thinking through contemporary problems. We also seek work from ‘applied’ anthropologists and activists working in sites outside of academia. Submissions undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

Activism and possibilities of justice: anthropological perspectives

Workshop of the EASA-Network “Anthropology and Social Movements”

The unprecedented spread of mass mobilizations throughout the world let many observers no doubts: something “new” and still “without a name” is happening, argue distinguished left-wing scholars like Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek. The unexpected “Arab Spring” changed regional and global Middle Eastern politics, considered as “static” and out of the way for activism beyond the Islamist movement; the world spreading “Occupy” movements have set a new agenda highlighting the crisis of neoliberal austerity politics. With this development, themes and visions related to justice and solidarity evolved rapidly, has been re-interpreted by a diverse set of forces and has moved back at the fore front of global visibility. In this workshop, we aim to explore these possibilities of justice. What contributions anthropologists do make to this effervescent scenario?

Les coordinateurs de ce numéro de Belgéo souhaitent réfléchir sur le thème des « minorités ethniques ou nationales » deux concepts plurivoques entendus ici de façon souple, mais inscrits dans la lignée de P. Poutignat et J. Streiff-Fénart décrivant des groupes qui « n’existent que par la croyance subjective qu’ont leurs membres de former une communauté ». Dialectiquement liée à l’existence d’une majorité, la minorité — population en demande de reconnaissance d’une différence — est « ethnique » éventuellement d’un point de vue racial mais surtout par l’existence de « marqueurs ethniques » (langue, religion, culture, ou autres) qui lui sont spécifiques. La volonté de distinction implique reconnaissance dans la loi comme dans les discours. La façon de nommer les lieux, les individus ; les statuts accordés ou revendiqués ; la visibilité dans l’espace politique et social sont autant d’éléments caractérisant l’altérité.

The aim of this conference is to make an inventory and to analyze, from different ethnographic approaches, those often invisible phenomena of daily or extraordinary disobedience designed for, or inspired by, a rejection of spatial, economic, political, and social order. However, in order to identify them as mechanisms aimed at denouncing a particular order, we must approach these by looking at concepts that synthesize at once the processes that impose a homogeneous order as well as the practices that challenge it.

We propose to regard them both as part of one and the same process referred to as patrimonialization that transform places, people, « traditions », and artefacts into heritage to be protected, exhibited, and highlighted. À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de Ethnologie française, revue publiée par l’Institut national des Sciences humaines et sociales (CNRS), La Société d’ethnologie française et l’Association européenne des anthropologues sociaux (EASA) organisent un colloque international les 21 et 22 juin 2011. Afin de mesurer le rôle de la revue dans le domaine de l’ethnologie de la France et de l’Europe, ce colloque international propose de jeter un regard réflexif et interdisciplinaire sur quelques thèmes dont Ethnologie française a été l’initiatrice. Il s’agira de croiser le regard d’auteurs dont l’œuvre a fait date et de plus jeunes chercheurs travaillant dans le même domaine, parmi d’autres, le corps, la parenté, la religion, les migrations, l’identité nationale. Façon de revisiter des thèmes et des objets autour desquels la discipline s’est structurée, qui ont connu d’incessantes évolutions et permettent de mieux aborder les changements contemporains.
