  Peoples and cultures of the world

  In this interdisciplinary conference we aim to study different peoples and cultures of the world by taking into account the various ways peoples and cultures define themselves and others, thus shaping their identies. We aim to explore the complex relationships being established between cultural dynamics and identites in their spatial and/or chronological dimensions. We would like to focus on the variety of cultures in the world, on their diversity comparatively studied, but we are also specially inclined to discuss top-down or externally imposed politics and the types of resistance used by natives to escape these hegemonic strategies. We invite papers that analyse peoples and cultures (social communities, ethnic groups, indigenous minorities, etc.) considering their specific features and differences, possibly taking into account the theorizations underlying the construction and deconstruction of colllective identities. In this sense, we are interested in the role played by the scholar analyzing different cultures and their spatial dynamics, often fluid and somewhat controversial according to a political perspective.

  The Black Metropolis, between past and future

  Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago

  The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XX^th Century until the contemporary moment.

  Traces et mémoires de l'esclavage dans l'espace atlantique

  Dans Cultural Trauma: Slavery and the Formation of African American Identity (2001), Ron Eyerman explore la formation de l'identité africaine-américaine à travers le traumatisme culturel de l'esclavage. Au-delà de son impact direct sur celles et ceux qui ont subi l'esclavage, Eyerman considère qu'en tant que processus culturel, le traumatisme est « transmis par l'intermédiaire de diverses formes de représentation et associé à la formation d'une identité et à la construction d'une mémoire collectives ». Cette conférence internationale cherche à examiner les fondements, les mécanismes et l'étendue de ces processus mémoriels.

  This interdisciplinary conference will examine cinematic and televisual cultural productions that fall under a broad "French-language" umbrella in order to map out significant trends as well as new directions in the study of global French-language cinema and television and its points of contact with other languages and industries. It also aims to explore the opportunities and limitations of adopting labels such as cinéma-monde, transnational, Francophone, and World Cinema, as critical frameworks.

  Multicultularisme et genre en France, Grande-Bretagne, Canada et USA

  Les débats français, britanniques, canadiens et nord-américains sur les tensions entre universalisme et particularisme sont au centre des questions relatives à l’immigration et à la diversité ethno-raciale, religieuse et de genre. Ce colloque se propose tout d’abord d’explorer les manières dont chacun des quatre pays gère les tensions entre multiculturalisme et genre. Ensuite, face aux réponses institutionnelles et aux pressions du groupe, de quelle manière les personnes les plus vulnérables des groupes réagissent-elles ? Enfin, dans quelle mesure les mouvements antiracistes sont-ils les alliés des mouvements féministes ?

  Les Canadiens aux États-Unis : culture, économie et société des rêveurs américains

  Les organisateurs invitent chercheurs, auteurs et étudiants de toutes les disciplines à un colloque sur le thème de l'expérience étatsunienne des Canadiens - et à soumettre des textes pour publication. Le colloque aura lieu à l’Université de Montréal les 12 et 13 mai 2010, dans le cadre du 78e congrès annuel de l’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).Le colloque sera suivi de la publication d'un dossier spécial dans la Revue internationale d'études canadiennes.

  Multiculturalism, modernity and citizenship in Canada

  Interdisciplinary Conference in Canadian Studies

  From the 1990s on, the Canadian multicultural discourse has increasingly focused on the concept of citizenship, which has in turn meant insisting more on the notion of unity and less on that of diversity. Should this be interpreted as a step backward from multiculturalism taken as an ideology and as a policy? From a European perspective, what lessons can be learnt at a time when a growing number of countries are adopting a multicultural terminology and the European Union needs to negotiate a balance between unity and diversity? Should the emergence of a modern form of citizenship be interpreted as the advent of hybrid identities or as a step towards a certain social and cultural anomy? What are then the prospects for multiple identities within a plural nation?
