Medieval culture and war conference

It is an undeniable fact of human history that war has been on many occasions and in many different historical contexts a powerful stimulus for innovations and change in culture, politicals, and thought. During periods of transition warfare had a crucial role in medieval societies. Following previous meetings in Leeds (2016), Lisbon (2017) and Brussels (2018) the 2019 Medieval Culture and War Conference will be held in Athens in the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). The conference will focus on ‘Transformation, Renovation, and Continuity’.

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference (2019)

This panel - epidemics, climate and history – for the European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference in Tallinn (2019) aims to explore specific climatic/environmental and institutional factors that shaped both the way in which plagues lato sensu and other epidemics, including cholera, yellow fever, typhus, typhoid fever, leprosy, syphilis, etc., originated and spread as well as the consecutive significant demographic and socio-economic consequences at a local or regional scale throughout history (without geographical limitation). A particular attention will be given to original interdisciplinary approaches linking natural proxy archives and written documentary sources.

Panel at the European Social Science History Conference (ESSHC)

This panel aims to study settlement patterns of migrants, according to a gendered approach. It aims to bring together scholars working on migration and settlement dynamics, by focusing on the extension and quality of relationships that newcomers could develop in the new environment and by highlighting differences between men and women. In addition it aims to investigate how these ties influenced, successfully or not, their settlement process: the daily life, the research of a job or a house, the access to credit networks, to poor relief or to other urban resources etc...

In the last two decades, the history of the Jewish family has been at the center of a number of studies that have – in the light of a more general historiographical evolution – considerably renewed the subjects and perspectives of this field of research. In this context that made the Jewish studies a well distinguished discipline, we wish to focus on an aspect that has never been studied systematically and has never been subject to a methodological and comparative synthesis: the patrimonial transmission.

Typical Venice?

Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries

What are “Venetian” commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts. This conference focuses on the question of how Venice designed and exported its own identity through all kinds of its goods.

The starting point of the workshop is the assumption that relatively few and oftentimes socially connected persons were directly involved in early modern financial bubbles and that stock trading was mostly limited geographically. The workshop intends to examine how people dealt with the bursting of the bubbles in the local context.

Gender in the European Town: Medieval to Modern

As places which fostered and disseminated key social, economic, political and cultural developments, historically towns have been central to the creation of gendered identities and the transmission of ideas across local, national and transnational boundaries. The Conference will be organised in three main strands. We encourage papers that address one of the strands, or proposals that cross the theme boundaries. They should also explore what influence gender has on the shape of towns themselves, as a force for change. We welcome local studies as well as more comparative approaches and encourage historiographical, theoretical and empirical considerations.

Quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction

Après Madrid (2003), Cambridge (2006), Cottbus (2009), Paris a été choisie pour accueillir le quatrième congrès international d'histoire de la construction. Trois écoles d'architecture (Paris-Malaquais, Paris-La Villette et Versailles) ainsi que le Conservatoire des arts et métiers pilotent cet évènement. L'histoire de la construction apparaît par définition hybride, associant aussi bien la conception que la réalisation, comme la préservation, la technique que la culture, et se trouve de fait interdisciplinaire. Y participent aussi bien des historiens de toutes disciplines (archéologues, juristes, économistes, historiens de l'art, etc.) que des praticiens (ingénieurs, architectes, entrepreneurs, artisans). Plus de 350 chercheurs, enseignants et praticiens, vont présenter le dernier état de leur recherche dans ce champ et en débattre sur quatre sites parisiens et versaillais. 6 conférences plénières seront délivrées par des personnalités reconnues par leurs pairs. L'Institut universitaire européen organise les 6 et 7 décembre 2010 une conférence internationale sur le thème « Révoltes populaires et violences dans l’Europe du XIXe siècle. Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine ». À l'occasion de cet événement, un panel de chercheurs internationaux débattra de la diversité des expériences de violences populaires survenues au sein de plusieurs pays européens au cours du XIXe siècle. Les communications aborderont différents prismes historiques : social, politique, genre, religieux, culturel, pénal et économique.

Transferts de technologies. Étude du cas suisse, XVIIIe-XXe siècle

Alors que le problème des transferts de technologies et de la circulation internationale des innovations a fait l'objet de plusieurs synthèses et débats sur le plan international, l'historiographie suisse n’a pas encore abordé ces questions de manière systématique. Ce désintérêt est d’autant plus étonnant que le transfert technologique, bien plus que l’innovation, est à la base du développement économique de ce pays. En tant qu’économie « suiveuse », la Suisse a, en effet, emprunté quantité de cheminements afin de s’approprier certaines technologies mises au point dans d’autres pays européens et, dès le 19e siècle, de nombreux producteurs suisses sont parvenus à s’inscrire dans un processus d’innovation pour devenir à leur tour des exportateurs de technologies, notamment par l’intermédiaire des multinationales. Ce colloque, qui souhaiterait réunir des chercheurs suisses et étrangers, se propose de fournir une première contribution à cette dimension encore peu étudiée dudit "miracle helvétique". Un choix de papier sera publié dans la revue d'histoire Traverse, publiée par Chronos, à Zurich.
