What have Mesopotamian Empires ever done for their people? Tracking the macro in the micro
In this workshop, we aim to take the view from below and investigate in what way imperial dynamics may have affected the lifeways of people in their territories. The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

The conference organisers invite presentations on economy and memory, in particular, but not limited to the context of post-socialist economic transformations in East-Central Europe, as well as their interactions with parallel economic processes in other parts of the world. They may be based on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including history, sociology, anthropology, economics, literary and film studies, and others. While the focal point for most economic transformations in question is the 1990s, we invite speakers to address these changes in the context of their longer histories with attention to the genealogy of shifts in economic thought through the 20th century and related memory processes.

International migrations and labour from the 70s to the present
Since the 70s the presence of migrants in Europe, and especially in Italy, has become a structural issue and has been at the center of the public and political debate. The progressive demolition of welfare systems, the job precariousness, and new consumer lifestyles have generated different responses in terms of regulation of the admissions of foreign citizens in search of a job and their management (housing issues, access to health care, etc.). Both with regard to organization of forms of protection of immigrants in the exercise of theirs fundamental rights, especially in cases of serious discrimination and exploitation (immigrant associations, trade union action, etc.).

Crossing Critical Boundaries
Race in the Marketplace (RIM) is an international multidisciplinary research network dedicated to innovatively advancing knowledge and critically understanding the role of race and how it intersects with class, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and disability in global marketplaces. Building on our successful inaugural RIM Research Forum held in Washington D.C in spring 2017, we have decided to broaden the movement across the Atlantic and hold the second biannual RIM Research Forum in Paris (France) from June 25 to June 27, 2019. The broad objective of this second Forum is to continue the dialogue across domains, disciplines and geographical boundaries to contribute to an integrated understanding of race in markets.

Sport tourism has become the fastest growing sector of the tourism industry and is still thriving. What's more, even if, mega events (Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups) or other largescale events (World Championships in some sports, major tennis tournaments, etc.) had been drawing attention for a long time, it now seems to be obvious that small-scale events carry diverse benefits for their host towns too. The cost of their organization is lower, the required facilities are less expensive to construct and also to maintain after the event, and these can then be used by the local residents.

The European electricity market and national energy policies
This workshop has the ambition to put together a group of researchers in political science, economic sociology and institutional economics who are interested in these interactions between the wholesale market and energy policies. The scientific challenge is to understand how our political, economic and legal institutions are supporting these frictions and are attempting to articulate these policies, and how articulations rely on economic expertise, political negotiation, legal interpretation, etc.

Researches in international relations show various results on the domination nature of relations between the tutelary power of a country and its socio-economic fate. Under the prism of these dominant-dominated relations, it seemed judicious and timely to analyze the nature of the multiform relationships between Cameroon and its former tutelary powers, as well as the dynamics recorded in bilateral relations in a context of globalization. The purpose of these analyzes is to understand better the processes that have structured these captive relationships and to explore its patterns of deconstruction of dependence.

Competition and solidarity networks in contemporary South Asia's Labour Market
Hegemonic neo-liberal discourse assumes that free competition on all levels sparks a virtuous cycle of economic growth, which eventually trickles down to poor populations. Over the past three decades, the idea that restrictive labour laws hamper such competition has justified the deregulation of labour in the North and the un-regulation of labour in the South, notably in South Asia, where labour relations had already mainly been informal. Various sociologists have noted that intensified economic interactions and the rise of competition have made individuals more likely to activate their social networks to protect their individual interests. In this respect, to what extent do social networks shape relations in the diverse South Asian labour markets? How do new forms of social groupings reconfigure competition and solidarity relations? What forms of social interactions prevail, emerge and weaken in the market: chosen solidarity and inherited solidarity; inter-caste and intra-caste solidarity; class solidarity; corporate solidarity etc.?

In other words, how do the concrete modalities of this involvement reshape the definition of roles and statuses of private and public actors in politics and policy?

It goes without saying that how the “economic agent” is represented does matter to the utmost. It matters as much for economic theory as for empirical investigations that are based upon such models. It matters in the way institutions emerge, as to how societies get organized, and for the many devices contributing to the “general good” (whether they appear spontaneously, or are pragmatically and purposely created). It matters also for correcting incomplete or missing markets.

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Azerbaijan Customs are pleased to announce the 10th annual WCO PICARD conference. The conference will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 8 to 10 September 2015. Papers should focus on Customs or, more globally, the regulation, dynamics, and practices of the international trade of goods. The WCO encourages attendance and paper submissions from anthropologists, economists, geographers, historians, lawyers, and political scientists. As a part of national financial arrangements for higher education, income contingent student loans have been implemented in many countries (including Australia, Sweden, South Africa, England and Thailand, among others). These schemes are generally collected through income taxation systems and are repaid only when current income exceeds a specified level. This workshop aims at gathering internationally recognized experts on this issue, as well as French practitioners within higher education and within public policy, During the sessions, the results of high-quality applied research will be presented. The policy implications of these results will be discussed in a round table.
