The French Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme offers 10- month fellowships in the four Institutes of Paris, Lyon, Montpellier and Marseille. Since the 70s the presence of migrants in Europe, and especially in Italy, has become a structural issue and has been at the center of the public and political debate. The progressive demolition of welfare systems, the job precariousness, and new consumer lifestyles have generated different responses in terms of regulation of the admissions of foreign citizens in search of a job and their management (housing issues, access to health care, etc.). Both with regard to organization of forms of protection of immigrants in the exercise of theirs fundamental rights, especially in cases of serious discrimination and exploitation (immigrant associations, trade union action, etc.).

The development of green, ecological city or Eco-city has been introduced as a mean to support sustainable urban development within a social, economic, environmental and demographic con-text (Tsolakis, Anthopoulos, 2015). The Eco-city concept was introduced by Urban Ecology, a non profit organization that was founded in 1975 by Richard Register (Roseland, 1997). An Eco-city ensures the well-being of its citizens via a holistic urban planning and management approach with the aim of eliminating waste and emissions (Register, 1987). From a systemic point of view, an eco-city can be described like a set of different complex sub-system that need to be associated or reconnected in order to deli-ver the desired outcomes (Diemer, Morales, 2016).

Technocracy is the political swearword of our times. From the multiple crises of the European Union to the recent elections in the United States, the role of experts in public governance is often invoked as one of the main sources for the political ills of contemporary society, responsible for the exacerbation of social inequalities, the decline in the acceptance of political institutions, and the rise of populist movements. This conference will look at the genealogy of technocracy and the trajectories of various groups of “experts” in western Europe’s mid-20^th century.

ERASMUS+ Jean Monnet Action

The Resources on the European socio-economic model (RESuME) project, co-funded by the Erasmus+Jean Monnet Action for Institutions and the University of Luxembourg, aims to contribute to the study of the European socio-economic model, its origins, current characteristics and future development. The project focuses on the interaction between society, economic players and public authorities, through the prism of the notion of European competitiveness. It draws on the disciplines of contemporary history, law, economics, political science, political philosophy and sociology. To shed further light on this subject, the RESuME project is creating an innovative new series of scholarly contributions: the ‘State, Society, Market and Europe’ Research Papers (RESuME Papers).
