Clausewitz as a practical philosopher

Special Issue of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence

Clausewitz, still perhaps the most important and referenced theorist of war, was deeply influenced by the thought and philosophy of his own time. Although Clausewitz rejected an abstract philosophy of war, he highlighted that his approach was a philosophical attempt to understand war. His “wondrous trinity,” as well as his dialectics of defense and offense are essentially hybrid conceptualizations. By elaborating the philosophical foundations of Clausewitz’s theory, this special issue aims to contribute to a better understanding of the ongoing transformation of war and violent action in a globalized world.

Pluralizing perspectives? Truth and Reconciliation in societies emerging from conflict and/or violence

This is a one-day workshop on the plurality of reconciliation practices in post-conflitc societies. What various meanings are assigned to the word ‘reconciliation’ in the different communities where such initiatives have been implemented? How may conflicting interests or views be reconciled? The organisers also wish to study the influence of historical factors, and assess how the accounts of those seeking reconciliation have evolved over time. An analysis of past initiatives will also be relevant. Finally, a distinction between nationally and locally devised initiatives may be made to better assess the policies implemented, their sustainability, and their impact on the local communities. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop and submissions by researchers in Humanities or Political and Social Sciences will be welcome.

Politics of epistemic vulnerability in the nuclear age

Nuclear choices commit populations and societies for at least decades and can cause large scale damage in a very short period of time. How is the scope of available nuclear choices decided then? When it comes to weapons, direct experience cannot be the answer as no one can rely on personal experience of nuclear war. Most decision-makers no longer even have the experience of the effects of such weapons either given that North Korea has been the only country testing nuclear weapons since 1998. The populations’ wishes do not qualify either, since they are very rarely consulted and only few studies on those attitudes exist.Therefore this multi-year seminar investigates the grounds on which the scope of publicly acceptable nuclear choices have been based since the end of nuclear testing.

Actes de justice, événements publics : les criminels de la seconde guerre mondiale en procès

The conference suggests approaching trials of war crimes and of crimes against humanity, which took place in the aftermath of World War II and its following decades, as specific social events. By including professional and social actors (magistrates and police force, whistle-blowers, witnesses, defendants...) who got involved and shaped audiences of such trials, the conference endeavours to question the notion of publicization. It will cross this perspective with a study of the part played by the media supports in the organization and in the public reception of these trials.

ISA47 is launching a new journal "Social Movements and Change". Philipp Altmann, Deniz Günce Demirhisar and Jacob Mwathi Mati are organizing a special edition on "Social Movements of the Global South – Methodological and Theoretical Considerations". Their aim is to "bring together research on social movements worldwide that break with the Eurocentric bias of social movement theory and try to develop both theories and methodologies apt to understand action, discourse or outcomes of social movements in the Global South".

Jihad and territory

The first part of the conference will discuss the global jihad and strategies of territoiralization.The jihad narrative, rooted in the colonial period in its current interpretation refers to belonging to the umma, a global nation imagined as the basis for a new identity which, instead of relating to a territory, follows the thread of networks beyond borders. Youths who have chosen the path of jihad thus turn state territories into a cross-border space that is deterritorialized and denationalized.

International Social Science Summer School in Ukraine - Mykolaiv (Ukraine)

The 5th Annual International Social Science School, to be held in Mykolaiv, Southern Ukraine, on 2-9 July 2013, will have the theme of “Challenging the Social Order: Revolution, Reform and Transformation Under and After Socialism.” For an intensive week in early July, an international group of twenty doctoral students and up to a dozen faculties are converging to a different town in Ukraine to hear and discuss presentations on ongoing research on a critical theme. The Summer School is designed to be interdisciplinary and international and follows the format of a Workshop. The program also includes lectures and field trips, of historical and contemporary significance, within the region.

Les révolutions arabes à la croisée des chemins

Conférence internationale du 24 au 27 juin 2012, coorganisée par le CEDEJ, Sciences Po Paris, et Kuwait Program. Un an et demi après leur déclenchement, les révolutions arabes présentent un bilan hasardeux : en Tunisie, en Égypte et en Libye, où les anciens dirigeants ont été chassés du pouvoir par le soulèvement populaire, le paysage politique reste incertain. Au Yémen une transition inaccomplie s'est mise en place, au Bahrein le soulèvement a été étouffé, et la Syrie s'enfonce dans une guerre civile où l'opposition démocratique est prise entre la sanglante répression du pouvoir et la montée en puissance des éléments jihadistes.

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich in Switzerland will hold a conference the 23-24 November 2012 on International Peacekeeping in Africa, with a particular focus on current actors and missions. Over the last decades, the African continent has witnessed a proliferation of peacekeeping missions. Simultaneously, an increasing number of actors have become involved in the effort to bring peace to Africa, and this in turn has led to new and diverse types of operations. This conference seeks to analyze these developments in their entirety and comparatively in order to identify the most significant challenges and trends in international peacekeeping in Africa.

Although the topic may seem vast and complex, the multidisci-plinary approach allows for a better understanding of the topic and an informative exchange among scholars and interested people from all faiths.

The tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 provides an opportunity to reflect upon and assess what we have learned—and not learned—about communication and conflict. Plus de vingt ans après la chute du Mur, ce colloque international permettra de poser la question du retour du mur/barrière en relations internationales et, le cas échéant, d'analyser les facteurs qui ont conduit à cette résurgence, sinon dans les faits, du moins dans les discours. L'événement, organisé par la Chaire Raoul-Dandurand en études stratégiques et diplomatiques en collaboration avec l’Association for Borderlands Studies, aura lieu à l'université du Québec à Montréal, Québec, Canada les 19 et 20 mai 2011.Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the question still remains “Do good fences still make good neighbours”? Since the Great Wall of China, construction of which began under the Qin dynasty, the Antonine Wall, built in Scotland to support Hadrian's Wall, the Roman "Limes" or the Danevirk fence, the "wall" has been a constant in the protection of defined entities claiming sovereignty, East and West. But is the wall more than an historical relict for the management of borders? In recent years the wall has been given renewed vigour in North America, particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border, and in Israel, where the old Green line has been transformed into a wall separating Arab from Israeli. But the success of these new walls in the development of friendly and orderly relations between nations (or indeed, within nations) remains unclear. What role does the wall play in the development of security and insecurity? Do walls contribute to a sense of insecurity as much as they assuage fears and create a sense of security for those ‘behind the line’? Exactly what kind of security is associated with border walls?

Le mur en relations internationales

La fin de la Guerre froide a été marquée par la chute du mur de Berlin, l’essor sans précédent de la mondialisation, la libéralisation des échanges, la promotion de la libre circulation des produits, des personnes et des capitaux. L’avènement d’un monde où, selon la littérature, l’État devenait second en relations internationales et où la mobilité devait constituer le nouveau cadre d’analyse du système mondial, doublé de l’obsolescence de la souveraineté et, ce faisant, de la disparition des frontières physiques ne laissaient en rien préfigurer du retour du « mur » qui, après 2001, est réapparu avec comme un instrument clé de la protection de la souveraineté étatique. Depuis la Grande muraille de Chine, le mur d’Antonin ou celui d’Hadrien réalisé par les Romains, le Genkobori construit par les Japonais sur l’île de Kyushu, ou encore le Mur de Berlin durant la période contemporaine, le « mur » est une des clés constantes – en Orient comme en Occident – de la protection d’une entité constituée et souveraine.
