Freedom of Speech: from Opacity to Transparency

Contemporary societies value free speech and freedom of expression on the most personal – if not intimate – and sensitive issues. What happens to the right to remain silent and resisting the pressure? Qualitative surveys conducted through interviews are one of the most frequently used methods in the social sciences, if not the most used, and go far beyond simple and straightforward conversations. This research tool requires skill, subtlety and sensitivity, and one learns to a great extent from experience.

“History in Africa” Journal

This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private - African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance.

20 years of SPIRAL Research Centre

New developments, such as, for example, new genetic testing, digitized work environments, biobanks, 3D printed tissues or high-level radioactive waste, create promises and expectations, but also entail great uncertainty with regard to societal and political impacts. In this respect, we observe the development of imaginative and interdisciplinary dialogues pursuing multiple dimensions of possible outcomes and normatively evaluating such outcomes. In order to question and elaborate on the "trading zones" where such dialogues take place, we encourage submissions to present papers and/or posters on one of the three following subthemes: genomics and public health, safety and nuclear energy, and governance of the knowledge societies.

Colonial geopolitics and local cultures in the Hellenistic and Roman East (IIIrd Century B.C. – IIIrd Century A.D.)

Géopolitique coloniale et cultures locales dans l'Orient hellénistique et romain (IIIe siècle av. J.-C. – IIIe siècle ap. J.-C.)

It seems clear that, in the Greek-speaking regions of the Roman Empire, Hellenistic models (civic, military or institutional) exercised considerable influence over “Italic” colonial projects. Within this field, relations between military colonists and indigenous peoples demand special attention, considering the degree of social, cultural, economic, political and geopolitical transformation brought about by the installation of certain groups upon those lands as a result of the will of the great power(s) that ruled over them. As for the Roman colonization, modern scholars have often described Roman colonies as vectors of Romanization inserted in alien lands, writing that these communities must have functioned as images of a “small Rome.” While the existence of Latin-speaking colonists ruled by a favorable juridical system such as the Ius Italicum cannot be denied, such a reductionist model can no longer be accepted without qualification, especially in the context of the Greek-speaking provinces of the Roman East. The regions of the Eastern Mediterranean world saw the coming of a number of groups of Roman colonists and thus their cultural climate, their agrarian structures and their geopolitical environment changed. The aim of this panel is to explore new research paths based on broader studies in time and space.

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). This conference aims to gather a set of contributions to the question of the collective subject of politics. The conference welcomes papers that present theoretical contributions to the debate as well as case studies gathered from any geographical space and from all historical periods. It is mainly – but in no way exclusively – directed at researchers from different disciplinary areas working on political thought and social movements. The working language of the conference is English. Those interested in presenting a paper at the conference should submit an abstract no longer than 300 words before the 31st of December 2011.

Le secteur public a pour finalité de produire un impact sur son environnement. La performance publique se situe donc à l'interface de l'organisation publique et de son environnement et ne peut être mesurée ou gérée sur la seule base de ses ressources et activités internes. Justement, le marketing, entendu de manière extensive (Kotler, 1969), est en charge de gérer les relations d'une organisation avec l'ensemble de ses partenaires extérieurs. L'incorporation des dispositifs marketing dans les systèmes de mesure de la performance publique semble donc inéluctable, pour le meilleur et pour le pire. L'objectif de ce numéro spécial est de réunir des recherche empiriques focalisées sur les modalités et les effets de la mise en œuvre des démarches marketing dans le secteur public.

Les présentations explorent le droit colonial vis-à-vis du waqf en tant qu'institution mais aussi les propriétés leur appartenant dans le monde musulman avant l'indépendence des pays colonisés. Dans l'objectif d'étudier le droit qui s'y adaptait ou qui s'adaptait par rapport au waqf, les contributions se concentrent sur des mécanismes légaux innovateurs ou des discussions qui ont eu lieu dans les pays concernés à l'égard du statu quo de waqf au moment des interventions coloniales à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle.
