Decolonizing Museum Cultures and Collections: Mapping Theory and Practice in East-Central Europe

International conference for heritage scholars and practitioners

This conference brings together curators, artists, scholars, and other intellectuals and cultural activists working on East-Central European heritage, to reflect on how the main trends of decolonial debate are intersecting in practical and theoretical terms with the heritage sector, with a particular focus on museums in the region. The conference will place special emphasis on mapping both the range of colonial histories embedded in, as well as decolonial approaches to, museum collections and practices in East-Central Europe.

Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two-day workshop on the scientific study of relics. During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.

Être historien de l’art aujourd’hui

En tant que science humaine, l’histoire de l’art ne peut rester figée dans un schéma de pensée, se devant de se renouveler en se confrontant aux propres évolutions de son sujet d’étude. Ainsi, alors que les révolutions artistiques de ces dernières décennies ont profondément transformé le champ de la création, il apparaît nécessaire de s’interroger sur la manière dont ces bouleversements ont modifié, ou non, les réflexions et les modes de recherches de l’historien de l’art, ainsi que les applications de son travail. Ce colloque s’articulera autour de trois problématiques principales qui interrogeront le réaménagement des cadres traditionnels dans lesquels l’histoire de l’art est née.

It is now invitingapplications for two posts of Researcher for the project, one of whom willconcentrate on cataloguing microscopes, the other microscopical specimens.The officers will be involved with mounting on-line presentations of thecollections and a special exhibition. The successful candidates willpossess relevant degrees and a proven interest in the technical andcultural history of early scientific instruments. The officer formicroscopical specimens is likely to have a relevant background in thebiological sciences.
