Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

While in the past primary, secondary as well as tertiary relics were merely studied in relation to their religious and (art) historical background, recently the rise of a more scientific and archaeological approach is noticed. Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

While historians should take into account the movements in space that constantly transform sciences, they should not lose sight of the specific locations dedicated to the daily work of scientists. In scientific facilities (museums, laboratories, hospitals, etc.), modern scientists use their research instruments, meet with members of their networks, teach, and interact with various actors from outside of their scientific community. Participants in this symposium will seek how to write the history of this dynamic between circulation and institutions of science.

Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19^th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Alexandre Koyré: Transatlantic perspectives

This symposium commemorates the 50^th anniversary of Koyré's death by focusing on his legacy in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, pioneers of the history of science such as Thomas S. Kuhn, I. B. Cohen, Marshall Clagett, Gérald Holton or Charles Gillispie have all admitted his influence on the discipline. The participants will discuss Koyré's impact on the American intellectual landscape and the reception of his ideas among the historians and philosophers who sought to professionalize the teaching of the history of science in the United States.
