Dominion of the Sacred

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)

Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Os próximos dias 8, 9 e 10 de abril ir-se-á na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela a conferência internacional "A era do espaço. Estado e novas perspectivas", onde se reunirão pesquisadores de todo o mundo para debaterem sobre o spatial turn das humanidades na segunda metade do século passado. Este evento interdisciplinar reunirá geógrafos, filólogos, historiadores, filósofos e outras disciplinas relacionadas para rever o estado atual das spatial humanities, partilhar diferentes abordagens e métodos de pesquisa e debater sobre o seu futuro.

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century

Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.

Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this international conference brings together researchers committed to revising the historiography of ‘modern’ art. Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20^th century.

Ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, houve uma reorientação do olhar humano e do interesse científico, o que aconteceu para observar e serem observado mais no espaço do que no tempo, como aconteceu anteriormente. En los últimos años, ha crecido enormemente el interés por el estudio de las creaciones artísticas, especialmente literarias, poniendo el foco en la simbología o la relevancia de los lugares. El crecimiento de disciplinas como las mencionadas puede ser percibido a través de su contacto con otras disciplinas emergentes, como las humanidades digitales, también de reciente aparición. La simbiosis entre ellas ha dado lugar a las humanidades espaciales o al deep mapping, entre otras. Cómo han evolucionado estas teorías en los últimos años, qué ha cambiado en nuestra concepción del término o cómo vivimos o nos relacionamos con el territorio?

Cathedrals and Mosques: Building Urban Memories and Landscapes in Southern Europe (12th - 14th centuries)

This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.

Por definição, a cidade é uma entidade viva que traduz um coletivo de indivíduos que partilha e atua num determinado contexto material, social e cultural. A sua história constrói-se de sonhos, conquistas e perdas, pelo que é também uma história de identidade. Conhecer a história das cidades é compreender o nosso lugar na contemporaneidade. O passado é sempre observado a partir do olhar do presente e apenas poderá ser compreendido enquanto tal. Por ocasião do 261º aniversário do Terramoto de Lisboa de 1755, convidam-se os investigadores e especialistas no campo dos estudos do património, das humanidades digitais, história, história da arte e tecnologias da informação a partilhar e debater a sua experiência e conhecimento sobre o património digital.

The Paradigmatic City: Origins, Avatars, Frontiers

Ao longo da história da civilização, as cidades oferecem-nos paradigmas. Elas personificam formas ideais de vida social; surgem como capitais de impérios, mas também como centros de uma identidade nacional, cultural e religiosa; são focos de desenvolvimento económico e político. Todas estas formas se revestem de particular interesse para este congresso. Muitas cidades podem ser consideradas paradigmáticas: Atenas ou Roma, na Antiguidade Clássica; Veneza e Florença, como reflexo das dinâmicas transformações do Renascimento; Londres, Paris e Berlim, como capitais da Modernidade; Nova Iorque, Rio de Janeiro, Tóquio ou Xangai, como epítomes das novas metrópoles em franco crescimento.

Summer School "History Takes Place - Dynamics of Urban Change"

The summer school invites applications particularly from postgraduate students in history, art history, cultural studies and the social sciences, as well as young architects and city planners. Applicants should have a genuine interest in an interdisciplinary exchange on the history of the city and city development. Participants should have a specialization connected with Rome as well as a keen thematic and methodological interest in urban studies. Sessions will be held in English. Applicants are expected to prepare for the sessions with course materials and reading lists in order to be able to give a presentation on a set topic related to their academic interests and competencies. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the organizers.
